  1. Heys guys this is Pookie, I found out that crown molding is a great chew and it really gets your humans to respond! We had some company once and that big M2 took a chunk our of the fire place mantel-that is where I got the idea to redo the woodwork. One of my goffin pals showed me how to get new toys with your humans credit cards they leave by the computer to make it easy for you on line ordering-those people sure are surprised when my boxes of toys show up at the door! I think next time I will get some Palm nuts. All my flock mates are happy I figured that one out!
  2. Nice to share that progress, good work! Perhaps if your fingers were less tasty?

  5. We all face these tragic moments and grow through them but that does not lessen the pain, only time and distance from the event dulls that. So sorry your weekend was a sad event.
  6. Good to know we all appreciate the update!
  7. We have a lost bird section and it is great that you are getting the word out. Don't know what part of Texas you are in but if you are near Houston there was a Grey or two listed as missing on Craigs List in the last week or two.
  8. Greys are living outside year round in some very cold climates as they are outdoors all the time they have had time to adapt. When in a power failure keeping your birds cool in summer or warm in winter can be creative. Sprinklers or misting in summer to help cool and putting ice cubes in their water bowls. Winter cover the top and 3 sides of the cage with a heavy natural fabric quilt or blanket-no nylon or other plastic based fabrics in case they chew, should help to hold their own heat inside the cage. As long as your home remains above freezing they should do fine. You can also feed a warm mash make certain your bird remains hydrated and if the temps fall below freezing make certain your bird has some very wide perches so he or she can fluff up and cover their feet to prevent frostbite. Greys seem to handle the winter temperatures very well as long as they have shelter from the wind and wet. Do check any space heaters for teflon type products you do not want to use them if they do contain it.
  9. Welcome and looking forward to more pictures as your little one grows up.
  10. These curly feathered guys are a genetic mutation that is very short lived.
  11. Nice, progress is coming faster now, thew trust levels are building.
  12. I do try to be as diplomatic as possible and consider how what I am typing sounds when read back but when it comes to adding a little humor I sometimes fail and it gets painful for some one. Was bullied as a child in school and it taught me to try to leave everyone a little happier rather than tearing them down you never know when youur own words will come back to you. It also never helps the birds involved when we chase others always from our support and efforts at education.
  13. Have you watched Lindsey Stirling on U tube her dubstep violin vids are very good, I share Metallica, Seether, Buffy St. Marie and Muse with the FIDS. Hubby plays the Country Western genera for them-ugh.
  14. I would also ask how much fruit is he getting as an overabundance can cause some of these symptoms as well. Either way a Vet visit is recommended.
  15. So true about the search function being obtuse, good to know we have a Math geek among us, I am so not but my kids are.
  16. Such a loss is so painful my heart goes out to you.
  17. Welcome indeed, love those little Mac's they are so full of life.
  18. Avery sad day for music and for all who knew the family, hugs to you.
  19. Sarah it sounds like he may have a calcium deficiency or his clumsiness may be due to a lack of flight ability if he was wing clipped early. Did your Vet do any blood work during his exam? A lack of sufficient calcium would show up if tested for. Calcium is a key element for all parrots. Calcium-rich foods include leafy greens, carrots, unhulled sesame seeds, broccoli, dandelion and other greens, yogurt and almonds. To absorb calcium, vitamin D3 is needed, which can be acquired through sunlight naturally, or in pellets as a supplement. Let your parrot enjoy some safe time outdoors or provide access to a full spectrum light. Light filtered through window panes is not full spectrum. Foods which help produce vitamin A are also essential for parrots. Deep orange vegetables and fruits are rich in beta carotene (yams, pumpkin, carrots, winter squashes, mango, papaya, apricots and cantaloupe) as well as palm oil, leafy greens and broccoli. Make vitamin A and calcium-rich foods a regular staple in your bird’s daily diet. Most parrots enjoy grains. These can be cooked, sprouted or simply soaked. There is a wide variety to choose from such as quinoa, groats, spelt, kamut, rice, amaranth, buckwheat and barley. Combine grains along with recommended legumes such as lentil, garbanzo, adzuki or mung for complete protein. Other sources of protein include cooked salmon or trout, tuna, chicken, chicken bones, quinoa and occasional egg dishes. Most parrots relish these foods and will savor every morsel. Healthy seeds contribute to the health of your parrot. These include: sprouts, soaked or sprouted grains, legumes, nuts, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, and sesame seeds.
  20. Dave that pigeon has clipped wings so avoiding any predators can be problematic until a good molt. Bird is already inside the cage so lets roll with it for now and do your best tracking that band information. Always disinfect any cage and accouterments between any birds Parrots or Pigeons. Here are some sites with info. http://www.pigeoncote.com/vet/recovery/recovery.htm, http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/epi/epi-pigeon.shtml, http://www.petcaregt.com/pigeons/Pigeon-Health.html
  21. They can be very tame and at least they do not carry bird flu. Pigeons are remarkable flyers and the Navy has used them as search and rescue birds as their eyesight is so great. Smarter than you might think as well.
