The post by "TPU" is really interesting, and helpful. We all seem to worry when it concerns our feathered friends and try to do what we can at the time, "A ounce of prevention". The reason we would try to remedy a condition like this is to make sure it doesn't spread to the new healthy feathers.. Jay

How We Survived Spock's First Christmas Eve: Cast of Characters: Spock: The Grinch Salsa: The Living Christmas Tree Joey: The Narrator Freddy: Timmy Tango: Scrooge Pistachio: Battered Christmas Wreath Rollo: Canine Vacuum Buddy and the Cockatiels: Chorus What a Christmas it was. We put a tree and the birds took it down for us later on that night...I hung stringed popcorn and cranberries around the house and all night long we squirted and cracked our way around as we walked on smashed cranberries and crushed popcorn that the birds had dropped. Buddy and the Cockatiels provided the background music but we never heard that version of Jingle Bell Rock with cuss words from Buddy... Pistachio kept saying "STOP THAT" to Buddy as he sang his version of Christmas Carols. Maggie added a High C as Tango snapped her bra strap as she walked by. Joey in the background called out to all "Spock, come here," "Salsa, NO BAD", "Joey wants a kiss", [smack], [rasberry sound], "Good water", "Do the HOOOOOKIE...." Freddy stood at the top of his cage with his wings spread, trying to look like a Christmas Angel but looking more like a plucked Thanksgiving Turkey... Spock didn't steal Christmas, he just stole all the food he could find and pulled all the ribbons off the packages. Salsa had a couple plastic bulbs hung on her and she walked around proudly as a living Christmas tree... Christmas was over before Christmas Eve afternoon.... Rollo, the dog, scurried merrily around the floor, gobbling up fallen chunks of broccoli, cranberries, carrots and AVI Cakes... At 9pm, with all tucked in, we said our prayers of thanks.... (Disclaimer: No birds or dogs were harmed in this production, other than the director and producer, Jay and Maggie...)

B)No stories? Amazons...there are approximately 27 types of them, around 12 of them are endangered. What experiences have you had with Amazons? Happy, funny, sad, training, raising, nutrition, questions, give or receive help? Any Amazon subjects, photos is what we're all looking for. These are wonderful creatures....if you have more than one bird or different types, how do they compare? Let's share.... Jayd

When our fids get "biting" we look at them solemnly and say in a quiet voice, "I don't like that!" drop our heads and walk away...Takes time...Our amazons we give a direct "No"....The psychology of each species is different.

Like Dan said Wanna Picture"...Your patience shows in your post's...

Renate, Talon and all the rest of you, Where's your pictures? Hello, I thought I might mention a trait that Amazons are famous for "BAD ATTITUDE" [LOL] during mating season. All of us with youngsters don't have to worry for a while, they don't mature until sometime around 5 years to 12 years old. Some Amazons, especially males, become very hostile and territorial at this time. It's very important that we perch-train our birds so that if they become aggressive toward us during this stressful time, we have a way of safely handling them so we can clean and change their cages. Some owners leave the birds in their cages during this period. Please remember, if your bird is of this demeanor, it is NOT your fault. Be patient with them, they will be your little sweetheart again when season is over. Remember the Golden Rules: * Limit daylight hours to around 10 hours. * No soft foods. * Cut down on high-protein foods. * Normal bathing with no increased or extra bathing or misting at this time. * Limit touching to head and neck only. * No hiding places that they might mistake for a nest. Not all Amazons have this attitude and if they do, there may be varying degrees. Just bear with them, this too shall pass. As opposed to our Greys, you use verbal firmness in a direct approach and eye contact when correcting your Amazon and to set their limits. NO is a common word to use when working with your Amazon. When Salsa gets too loud, Joey says curtly, "Salsa, BAD!" Lol  Renate, a karma for starting this post..... :)A note on amazons diet, there prone to "Fatty Liver and Fatty Tumors" problems through out there life. They're weight and fat intake has to be monitored, they will eat so much they can no longer fly!![salsa's on a low fat diet] Nut's and high fat food are the culprits.A easy way to tell if your amazon is to fat is to look at there breast area, if there is what looks like a lot of cleavage,it could be over weight...:woohoo:

Guess who, Our lady is Salsa, shes 10mo's[?] old, female, just started saying "step-up". Hand fed her and 3 others. Her favorite pass time is eating and going in Joey's [CAG] cages and playing with his toys....Joey let's her play for a while than nips her tail.[lol] Salsa is on a no nut diet. Thanks Talon, karma Jay and Maggie
