  1. Re. Northwest Cages, I guess… I'm just looking to see what my options are. At the moment I am looking at this one from Freedom Cage. http://www.freedomcage.com/?ProductID=3 Apparently it is available NOW to be shipped. (important factor) in my decision. Right now I'm just waiting to see how much interior space there is. .. Unfortunately it is only available in Dome top at the moment. I'm trying to figure out how I feel about Dome top cages.
  2. Does anyone have their cages? How's the design and performance? How's their service? . I'm doing research. Will contact them this week too. http://www.sscages.com/index.htm
  3. Here is Emma on her Ribbonwood T-stand playing with one of her gorgeous new toys today. She's completely captivated and I succeeded in providing Avian Enrichment. *she especially loves the cholla pieces* My bonus is that Emma doesn't pounce on the Camera.
  4. Our Flyer arrived today and it IS GORGEOUS! Sachi and Emma have a new activity center... Doing business with Donna was *seamless* from beginning to end. She even gave us 5 free Gorgeous toys. I strongly recommend them to anyone who wants to provide some avian enrichment to their parrots. It took 5 business days for me to have my gym delivered to Montreal from California. In addition, they custom built all of my gyms in less than one week. Thank you so much Donna and Leon. http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/catalog20/hanginggyms.html
  5. I need to know which kind or brand are the best to buy and where is the best place to buy them please.
  6. I am cross posting this from one of the other forums that I am a member of. The situation is urgent.. if you can help. Please do. Thanks. Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of NM just got a phone call from a local family who is in urgent need of assistance. 11 parrots are in need of rescuing today as they are living in deplorable conditions. Animal control has inspected the property and has stated that if the birds are not removed from the property and put into a better situation within 48 hours, they will be removed by animal control. There are no facilities at animal control to house parrots and many times in the state of New Mexico, if any animal bites, it is seen as unfit to be a pet and is euthanized. We have been asked to assist in this situation to remove the animals today. We have already commited to working with many other birds this month, especially those with special needs and do not have space for these new arrivals. We are looking for foster families or rescue groups in the following (or surrounding) states who may be willing to help us out. New Mexico Colorado Nebraska Illinois Michigan Indiana Ohio Missouri Oklahoma Texas If all goes smoothly, the following birds will be surrendered to Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of NM by the end of the day: 2 Sulfer Crested Cockatoos 1 Citron Crested Cockatoo 1 Umbrella Cockatoo 1 Scarlet Macaw 1 Lutino Indian Ringnecks (pair) 2 Blue Front Amazons (pair) 2 Mexican Red Headed Amazons Because of the nature of this situation, it will be important for these birds to be with someone already well seasoned about the proper husbandry of parrot care. We do not require that a foster family have species specific experience but it will be helpful in deciding who will be fostered with whom. We are especially seeking families that we have already estabilished good rapor with, as we will not have time to go through an interview process with you. If you are interested in fostering one of these birds please CALL the rescue at (505)994-0505. We ask that anyone interested in fostering be able to provide cage, food (seed, I am sure), toys, and $100 to go toward medical care. These birds will be vetted tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. This situation requires an urgent response. Thanks in advance! -Anna
  7. what a silly she is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEFpQayutxY
  8. I am cross posting this letter from another forum. Definitely something to know about imho. This is a very realistic letter written by one very frustrated shelter manager who wanted to get the word out... sad but true. Just food for thought. I don't want to start a debate or heated discussion about this topic. It was posted on the discussion group for the bird rescue I volunteer with because although it's mainly dogs and cats that end up it can also happen to birds and other pets: Letter from a Shelter Manager I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will. First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs. The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog". Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment. Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down". First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right? I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work. I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter. Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes. My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE! Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT. For those of you that care--- please repost this to at least one other list in another city/state. Let's see if we can get this all around the US and have an impact.
  9. I received the nicest news this morning. I almost choked up. I spoke to the Mom of one of the boys on the soccer team that found Emma. They had been a team that had kept on having losing streaks. Since finding Emma, they've won 4 straight Soccer matches. I am so thrilled for them. The president of the Soccer association wants to take team photos with Emma in them and the boys want to see Emma again.
  10. This made me cry. Part one: Part two:
  11. Thanks Cheyeness! Slight change in plans. Won't be taking the Multi level playstand. Will be taking the Grapevine Flyer and 2 T-Stands.. http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/cata...2/100083lg.jpg http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/cata...2/100463lg.jpg
  12. Our flyer and Playstand have been Ordered. Donna LOVES to talk about her gyms!! After discussing further, I have decided that our flyer will be MOSTLY grapevine and a bit of ribbonwood. The play stand will be All grapevine. The flyer will be a smaller version of...The Grape Adventure Flyer. http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/cata...2/101023lg.jpg and the Playstand will be the Grapevine Multi Level Climbing Tree. http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/cata...2/100058lg.jpg They will even build it so it's low enough to place under the Flyer!!
  13. I think ONE play stand and ONE Flyer is enough!! I'm leaning towards this one. http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/catalog20/image2/100140lg.jpg Apparently they're all custom made. I left a voicemail and am waiting for a reply now.
  14. From Exotic Wood Dreams. I intend to purchase a stand and a hanging gym. I'm new to the site and need to learn more about the grapevine and ribbon woods. I don't want anything like java or Mazanita. They seem to be too slippery. Please let me know what you think about grapevine and ribbon wood. I want something that is comfortable and provides a secure grip. Right now, the one that seems attractive is.. H -Combo- B or Ribbon Medium Rotating flyer. http://www.exoticwooddreams.com/catalog20/hanginggyms.html
  15. Today I purchased my first fresh figs of the season this year. Emma and Sachi really digged them alot last year. I was afraid they may have forgotten that they had liked them and we'd have to start from the Beginning. They BOTH remembered. They're a bit expensive over here but I love fresh figs and highly recommend them as a treat! [video=youtube;-PuwLU2Z4D0]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PuwLU2Z4D0
  16. No, I don't kiss her wings but when I send her a kiss, I'll kiss my hand because it'll give off a louder sound.
  17. I do believe parrots KNOW what they're saying. Nobody can tell me different.
  18. I really like being able to remove the canvas off of the roof of her travel cage. The wild flowers grow in the back.
  19. I'm having custom made *Glass Christmas ornaments* made to give as gifts to my loved ones. They will have individual photos of Sachi and Emma. Just wanted to share with all of you. They make awesome and personallized gifts. Very classy, simple, refined and well made. Pat is very nice and pays alot of attention to detail. She also offers one with a frame around it or EVEN pendants. http://www.etsy.com/listing/50641833/custom-glass-tile-christmas-ornament http://www.etsy.com/listing/50642656/custom-metal-framed-christmas-ornament http://www.etsy.com/listing/50616971/custom-glass-tile-pendant
  20. Here's a post from his mom who is sick with worry!! Joey is green and small, talks and whistles, he's banded, and very tame. We were at the Saunderosa Campground in Mercersburg PA. There is a reward for his return. Please Pm me if you have any useful info. Please CROSSPOST on other sites as well. Thanks.
  21. Which one of my parrots? YOu all get one guess and one guess only. When I come home from work, I holler hello to my parrots and go straight to the kitchen to wash my hands. I do this everyday. As I am standing at the sink washing my hands, you can only imagine how stunned I was to hear the sound of wings flapping behind me and all of a sudden, Emma lands on my shoulder. It seems that in her spare time, she has figured out how to jimmy with the mechanism on the cage door. I guess that custom made freedom Cage will have to arrive sooner than planned. Emma is proving to be very very .... much a handful lately.
  22. My deepest sympathies for your loss. RIP little Lolitta.
  23. Yes, they do travel far. I would say that what helped to bring my Emma home to me was that she was found by *good people* who did the right thing.
