Thanks Devon, Rishi is doing fine. But, the problem is that he has these scattered pink feathers all over the plumage which I understand in Greys could either be red factor or an indication of PBFD. So, I guess if it turns out to be PBFD, I will need a lot of advice and help from you.

Jill, your question set me thinking - does every "grey noise" have a meaning? And in general do all noises in the animal kingdom have meaning? Can't some noises be just random babbling?

My first bird, a cockatiel, went through a severe condition (she could not even get up, she could not perch, she was lying on her side looking dead) about 3 years ago. She nearly died. There are no avian vets here, and the regular vet was clueless. My wife and I nursed her through the sickness for 5 days and she is alive today through what I can only call a miracle. At that time I was researching parrot diseases and learnt about PDD (Proventricular Dilation Disease) and PBFD. Now when Rishi, my CAG was sick in September and I got him to an avian vet in Dubai, the vet said he suspected PBFD, mainly because of the scattered red feathers that he has. I have also heard of red factor and I guess without a blood test, we cannot establish if he has PBFD or not, and I cannot stand the stress of another trip to Dubai. We have decided not to get him tested. We will always treat him the same no matter what, and if it does turn out to be PBFD, we will take care of him as required. My only problem is I am an ex-patriate and may not continue in Muscat, Oman for more than 3-4 years from now. Rishi is only 16 months old. If it is PBFD, we will need to address the problem of re-homing Rishi since I am sure I will not be permitted to take him into my home country. But I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it and in the meanwhile keep praying for a cure to be discovered for PBFD.

birdtricks.com/womacks what a heartless joke

I have never heard of Chet "Womack" (it seems to be actually Womach), but I checked the Facebook reference given. Devonanno, you might know more and possibly have had bad experiences (and it looks like other members too have a hearty dislike for the Womachs), but from what I saw in the Facebook link, all the posts and entries were quite enjoyable and like the posts in this forum. I specifically read the one about the organic food and water that you have referred to and most responses agreed with you and none actually disagreed. And you have sent a very abusive email to Erica NY Rangers after which other members have reacted and not very aggressively in my opinion. I can understand how you feel given your Grey's condition and I pray that indeed if he has PDD you and he enjoy every moment in happiness and companionship. -
Maybe because of what I went through, my heart nearly stops when I hear of a bird being sick. Please keep her warm. Ensure that she is hydrated. Is she drinking water? How are the droppings? Is she feeding? If she is not drinking water you might have to make her drink. Ask your vet how exactly to give her water. If possible check her crop to see if there is any food accumulated there. Get her to an avian vet as soon as possible. Please update us. I will be anxious till we hear from you. I wish Yoshi recovers soon.

Unbelievable Jill !!!! And the point is I don't think moving the T.V. or the perch is a thought that has entered our heads !!! The things we do for these birds !! My wife and I are RAOFL !!!! To complete the story, both my cockatiels use the T.Vs as perches all the time, sitting right above the vent on the top of the screen (maybe because their little bottoms get warmed?). So both my LCD T.Vs are full of cockatiel poop !!!

Post edited by: ramsabi, at: 2009/11/15 15:54

JillyBeanz wrote: Oh Jill, try the following to add to Harvey's amusement: 1. Buy a 42 inch LCD TV. 2. Place it near Harvey's perch. 3. Put some mash or gruel in the food bowl. 4. Watch the new designs on your LCD screen as Harvey plays spray artist . My brand new Sony LCD T.V. has pellet mash all over the screen !!

While I don't "know" any other Greys, I have read that not all of them are talkers. Rishi does not talk much. He can say his name, my name and my wife's name and the names of our cockatiels. We have made a decision not to try to "train" him. We are happy with whatever he picks up on his own and even if he does not talk at all we belong to him completely !!!

Before my contribution, Karma to you for starting this thread. I am looking forward to great posts !! -
My wife has one for Rishi Kebabs !! She keeps threatening him, but he refuses to be intimidated !!

I have read that many AGs dip their pellets in water, and Rishi has been doing it for some time. How do they get this behaviour? It seems to be instinctive. Do they know that water softens the pellets? It is truly amazing.

I have not been able to find time to write a leisurely post after I came back from the USA. I found a nice little pet shop in Portland and bought loads of toys and accessories for Rishi and my cockatiels. I bought a huge Atom for Rishi that I had to dismantle and had to open my suitcase at three security clearances !! But it was worth it. But Rishi still loves his first toy named Dino: I had a telephonic consultation with an avian vet in Portland to whom I had sent Rishi's blood work, but not having seen the bird, she could not say anything much. Physically he seems to have recovered completely and is lively and full of vigour. Diet is now 50% pellets (Harrison's and Zupreem) 20% fruits and veggies, 20% rice and table food and 10% seeds Post edited by: ramsabi, at: 2009/11/13 17:18

Post edited by: ramsabi, at: 2009/11/13 17:19

Thanks everyone. Hazelnuts and pineapple are on the menu from today !!

Hi Omar, I am so sorry to hear this and my heart goes out to you because I know from experience how it feels. I am sorry I cannot offer you much in the way of advice. I can only tell you what I did. You are doing the right thing. Ensure that you feed him 10 cc every three hours. You have not mentioned anything about water. The vital thing is to keep him hydrated and warm. Also how are the droppings? I am sure you will get the same wonderful support that I got from all the members here. It would be a good idea to start a separate thread. My good thoughts are flowing towards you and your Grey. Please keep us updated. I will be waiting with anxiety to hear from you.

Are pineapples and hazelnuts safe for African Greys?

Thanks Judy. I am sure u remember my problem. I need to travel 500 kms and to another country for an avian vet !!! Is there no way at all that I could do it myself? It does not seem to involve any veterinarian skills !!

What kind of trouble can the leg band cause and how can it be removed? I would like to remove Rishi's leg band.

Sorry for posting this here but I could not find any other room. I edited my profile and then found that forum posts were appearing "latest first". I went back to my profile and checked but there it still said "oldest first". I tried changing things around but no luck. Can one of the administrators help me? I want to see the oldest post first, that is the last page or post of any thread should be the latest one. Thank you for your help.
