OOOOh I am so very excited for you I just brought my baby home a couple months ago and she will be 7 months old this weekend  It will be a long wait, but it will be sooo worth it you won't even believe it! As far as those first few days go...I'd say it depends on the bird. I had visited my little girl, Darwin, so many times that she knew me almost as good as the breeder  Naturally, when she came home she wanted to be out and was excited to see her new surroundings. I would play it by ear - you'll know whether your baby wants to be with you or needs some time to settle in. Make sure he is eating and drinking and try quietly talking to Sloopy through the cage. I'm sure he'll settle in beautifully and please read lots on here beforehand - you have lots of time to prepare! Cassandra

Two very beautiful birds. I just love the cockatoos, they're stunning. And congrats on the DYH Amazon! My boyfriend has a 15 year old girl, Sammy, and she is so well behaved and talkative! She sings the opera and steps up onto anyone.
-
Darwin did the same thing to me yesterday! At first I was very scared about it but I called my breeder and he said "Congratulations, your baby loooves you! Gross eh?" COngrats!
-
Congratulations on the job, Nick! And my those babies just melt your heart - I know how you feel!

Happy hatchday in advance ZZero! I love his name and the pictures are wonderful! The time goes by soo fast, doesn't it?
-
I am so sorry and cannot imagine your pain. Sending lots of hugs your way.

Thank you all so much for the support! I'll let you know how it goes!

Oh my goodness Pat that is too funny that happens to me ALL the time! It drives me crazy! "OH LOOK MOM that girl has a pigeon!" "Wow how did you tame that pigeon!?" I'm considering teaching Darwin to say "I'm not a pigeon!"

{Feel-good-00020114} So I have fantastic news and felt I should share with you all! Over the past few years I have maintained a good relationship with a parrot breeder about 15 minutes from my house (how lucky am I, eh?) and have just been told about a wonderful opportunity for me! I have bought a few birds from them, from finches to a parrotlet to my little TAG Darwin. My boyfriend also acquired his DYH Amazon, Sammy, from them. It is a husband and wife and a few choice employees at the store and so so so many birds, from finches to macaws. They have been in business for over 15 years and have quite the establishment. Anyway, not to go on and on, but I am going to university for Biology and hopefully will ultimately go to medical school. I love anything that has to do with biology and, of course, birds! I recently went to their store and was talking to them about how difficult it is to find work for the summer. Today I got a call and a job offer! I will be learning to hand-feed all of the babies and will be taking care of the breeder birds, as well as socializing the babies. I even get to bring Darwin with me! I feel so very privileged and am thrilled! This is bound to be the greatest job on earth! Just thought I'd share this with you I'm SO excited and will let you know how it goes if you'd like! Cassandra

HappyinGreece, my boyfriend has a double yellow headed amazon who is 15 years old, a female (we think). Little Darwin, my TAG, has just turned 6 months old and they get along okay. Darwin is very curious about Sammy and will occasionally run over to Sammy, going after her tail. Sammy is very patient and will just look at Darwin (I think she understands that Darwin is just a baby). They love to be in the same room as each other and watch each other but we are still working on getting them to stay on the same perch.

I thought I'd add my two cents to this, seeing as it is a wonderful topic. My little Darwin is probably the most significant life decision I have made. She has brought me an unbelievable amount of joy and laughter. I cannot believe how much she has changed my life. From the moment we found each other when she was only 5 weeks old, she has put some kind of spell on me - it is as though she is my child. I feel such a strong connection to her and cannot fathom my life without her. People truly don't know what it's like to have a parrot, they don't understand until they've experienced it. She makes my entire family laugh countless times a day, and as time goes on her personality is blossoming. Yes, I'm ranting and you all might think I'm crazy but this thread has lead me to believe that I'm not the only one who feels this way. I am so happy to have found this site and to have decided to get my little girl. Life is good!

Hello....this is for a friend of mine who is considering getting a Blue and Gold macaw. I was just wondering if anyone here has one. 1. What is he/she like? 2. Do they go through many of the stages the greys do (eg. terrible twos)? 3. Do they get along well with other birds? 4. Is their diet very much the same as greys? Thanks! Overall I'm just looking for some general information as this is a serious decision for my friend and I want to be sure she is informed! I've heard many wonderful things about them but I just thought I'd check in to see what you guys have to say

Oh little Ana Grey is such a sweetheart and they are so priceless when they're little. Darling pictures and I just love the one where she's asleep! Sooo cute. They're so funny when trying to talk, aren't they? I swear Darwin has said "hello" twice and also "step up" but it's still muffled. Have fun with Ana!

P.S...a little side note....since it is breeding season and depending on where you live one of the biggest factors in knowing it is breeding season is an extension of daylight hours. Try slowly decreasing the number of daylight hours per day down to around 12-14 by covering their cage. I've noticed that it has calmed Sprite quite a bit.

If you're still looking for info I have a little parrotlet, Sprite, a male. He is a tad over a year old now and is in maniac stage. Super sweetheart until breeding season kicked in with the hormones, now he attacks everything. Some days are better than others but I take him out daily regardless. Very intelligent little birds - I would say do everything you can to get them to be hand trained. Little Sprite can do a couple of tricks and has quite the vocabulary. How old are they? Will they step up? Like I said if you still need help I'd be happy to answer any/all specific questions!

I looked into getting insurance for Darwin in Canada but have not found anything yet. Is Exotic Direct only available in England/Europe? I'll have to look into it for sure.

Oh Carol I am so happy for you that they are FINALLY home!!!! I remember that feeling all too well and trust me, it just gets better and better. They will surprise you with their ingenuity and sense of humour every day. It looks like you are having a blast and they are so adorable.

I know how you feel Pat! Every day is a new adventure and she makes my life such a joy. I can hardly remember my life without her!

Thanks everyone so much for your replies! And yes, Judy, she is SUCH a camera hog. As soon as I take that thing out she is prancing around and posing all over the place. I think it's because I started taking pictures of her when she was 5 weeks old, she's so used to it!

Hello everyone! I have been watching watching watching but haven't posted anything in a long time! I thought I might just keep you guys up to date on little Darwin's progress! She just turned 20 weeks old (yay Darwin!) and has, for the most part, stopped gaining weight. She weighs a grand total of around 340 grams. Such a petite little lady! Her beak comes in lighter and lighter everyday, and so do her eyes! Especially in the sunlight you can see the true colour coming through. She is such a chatter box it's priceless. She can do 3 whistles now and loves to say "wooky wooky wooky". I say "Where's the wooky?" and she goes "wookywookywooky!". My mum swears she said "What are you doing?" the other day and I can definitely hear the syllables coming through. I'll walk around the house chatting to her on my finger and she responds with her adorable little chirps and squacks. Oh! And she laughs, too! There's always lots of laughter at my house and on a recent visit to the breeders, everyone laughed and Darwin goes "hahaha". The breeder was shocked and thrilled at the response. She has lots of favourite foods and will try anything I do. She eats like a horse and loves music! My dog has also gotten used to her and they chase each other around the kitchen. This is getting long so I'll suffice it to say that she has brought unbelievable joy to my life and my families lives. Her and my boyfriends Amazon are friends too, which is very comforting! She fits right in and I can't imagine my life without her! Here are some pictures of her, taken just a couple of days ago.
