  1. My little Timneh is now 9 months old and wonderful, and she was abundance weaned from the breeder I work at and came home at 16 weeks - healthy and with no regression. It was a long wait (especially since I was there so frequently!)....but perfection takes time! Sounds like you'll have a very well adjusted Grey when he comes home.
  2. 15. You'll find yourself waking up at the break of dawn for food prep and early cleaning - and surprisingly, you might not mind!
  3. LOL Jan that is a hoot! Emma is so funny. And I agree! It is totally normal and Darwin does it A LOT! Including hanging upside down by one foot on my finger as we walk places (while my other hand hovers below her out of paranoia lol)...and she also loves to hang by her beak from the top of her cage, with her feet swinging about....lol.
  4. Oh Ana sounds like such a doll and what a funny lorikeet you have Jingles! Here are my 10 things about Darwin! 1. Her life appears to surround how many green beans she gets in a week 2. She'll wolf whistle at my pup until he runs into the room 3. She can mimic my parrotlet and lovebirds calls to absolute perfection 4. She has no interest in any kind of Nutriberry 5. She is the foraging queen of Canada, and will figure out anything I throw at her within 30 minutes 6. She is the most talkative when on the perch in the shower with me - lately she just has to hear water running and she starts to rant! 7. One foot toy will keep her occupied for an hour one day and she'll have no interest in it thereafter! 8. She pulled 4 buttons off my cell phone 9. She poops on command! 10. Regardless of where she is in her cage, when I come in to say goodnight she runs to the front, grabs my finger with her beak once, very gently, and then hurries off to her sleeping place!
  5. Oh I cannot imagine what you are going through I am so sorry to hear about your loss. That is devastating news and no words will be able to take away the pain, but know that we are all here for you.
  6. This is absolutely thrilling! I just love watching the progress, it's such a neat experience. I'll be watching!
  7. This has happened to my baby, Darwin, twice since bringing her home and both times she pulled the feather out within about a week. It didn't seem to cause her much pain but like Dave said, she took her time and dealt with it as she saw fit. Greys are very intelligent and know how to handle things that affect them - they've been doing it for millions of years. And soon after Darwin pulled the broken feathers out they were replaced by even more beautiful maroon coloured ones I wouldn't worry too much.
  8. I sincerely hope your little one will be okay soon. It must be horrible to be separated while she is sick but hang in there! And please let us know if the vet has any idea what's wrong with her.
  9. Ohhhh how exciting! The breeder I work at just had little Timneh babies so I know just what you're going through - we sat on pins and needles waiting for them to hatch!
  10. Lol! You are scaring me for those terrible twos Dan! I love reading what Dayo is up to, he's got so much personality!
  11. Darwin goes bonkers for green beans, NutraPuffs, and any colour cheerio! MMMMMMMmmmmm cheerios.

    help

Agreed. She needs to go to the vet!
  13. Wow what an amazing story, I`m so very glad that the owner of Einstein was found and it`s very reassuring to hear that there can be happy endings when birds go missing.
  14. Great video of Dayo and Jake Dan, I loved it! I too am glad it`s okay, who knows what danger could be awaiting you when the dogs start barking. Dayo is quite a character and so well mannered for apologizing for whatever it is he was doing
  15. Hello, I have a random question for you. I think it was on this forum that I heard about a woman that got a new GE Profile oven, used it to make food for her birds, and had a tragic incident. I read that she lost all of her birds after they ate what she had made for them in the oven. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything similar to this or has experienced it upon purchasing a new oven. My family is looking at getting a new one and I want to be sure it will be safe for the fids. If anyone has recently bought a new oven or knows of anyone that has please let me know so I can be sure that no fid will be harmed. Thanks! Cassandra

  18. Well, the "pup" (doesn't look like one) is now 18 weeks old and almost 50 POUNDS!!!!! MY GOODNESS! Yep, he's huge. Yep, he's a maniac. And yes, people are afraid of him! Can you believe it!? Most people go running to see pups and people are scared! He's such a sweetie and has never been aggressive towards anyone or anything, and Sunday we start Puppy Power training! He's growing so well, shiny coat, bright hazel eyes and too much energy! He plays fetch and adores Darwin (as you've heard) and is healthy and happy. Here are some updated pictures of the giant, and one of Tango, my 12 year old Westie, because she doesn't want to feel left out
  19. My mum just said she's sitting there with a smile on her face munching away I think she's stunning, in the sun she seems to glow with a pinky colour. Her head will lighten up, and fade from white to cinnamon to pink to violet on her wings and back. I hope you enjoyed her story, and I'll keep you updated as I continue handfeeding her.
  20. This is kind of a long story but has a happy ending so here goes As most of you know I work at a breeders/bird store (to my great happiness). I mostly look after the breeder birds, who are separated into 3 different rooms depending on size and species. There is one room that is completely filled with floor-ceiling flight cages - mostly containing finches and doves. However, there is one cage with about 20 lovebirds, who have been paired for a number of years and breed often. In the beginning of July, a little baby was born with a bad leg. Basically, her right leg stuck almost entirely out to the side and allowed her little to no movement as a newborn. My boss and I decided to put elastics around the joint to try and pull the leg in. We let her be parent reared for 5 weeks in the hope that she would learn from them and be able to move around better as a result. The elastics pulled her leg in a little and she was moving around the nestbox as time went on. But her parents seemed irritated by her age and her still being in the nestbox, and one day I went in for feeding and cleaning and discovered her curled up in a corner on the bottom of the cage. I caught her, checked her crop and noticed she had been eating on her own. We gave her 2 weeks to see if she would perch or adventure to the top of the cage. She didn't. I watched her struggle, and although she tried, she never quite made it, and as time went on the other birds began picking on her. It was at this point that my boss had a decision to make - he asked me if I would take her. Of course I said yes She has been here since Saturday and stopped eating Sunday. I handfed her 3 times/day until yesterday, when she finally adventured out of her snuggle hut to the food sprinkled on the bottom. I skipped her lunch yesterday and she's eating well now. She is an absolute doll and will cuddle all day and all night. We are working on hand taming her and she is doing remarkably. Today she sat in my hand and didn't fly away  She is climbing around today and playing with little wicker balls on the bottom of her cage. She seems to be happy and doing very well. My mum and I love her so much, and I think she has a bright future ahead of her Here are some pictures, her name is Luna and she is a Cinnamon Violet lovebird (very beautiful), hatchdate July 1/09.
