Carol I am so happy for you - and yes they do have hot pink Aviator harnesses! Almost got one for little Darwin
-
Yayyy! I think that is a wonderful idea! When deciding to get Darwin there was a little boy that she was buddies with and I was so sad to take her away from him and wished I could have them both! That would be wonderful! I'm excited to hear what you decide!

I've read that it is a bird's instinct to look for food on the ground, and my breeder told me to put Darwin's dishes on the bottom of her cage...however, after watching her and realizing she wasn't eating much in her cage the first few days I moved the dishes up to the holders and she found them immediately. Is there a place Shady normally sits? I would say watch him and see where he spends most of his time, and try putting the food dishes as close to there as possible? I don't have the best advice, I just watched Darwin for a bit and noticed she hardly spent any time on the bottom of the cage. It also might just take him some time to get used to.

Are the dishes on the bottom of the cage or in holders on the sides?

Hello again...little Darwin is now 16 weeks old! Yay Darwin! I have a quick question that has been a concern of mine since I brought Darwin home. Is she sleeping enough? Here is the situation: I put her to bed each night around 8, give or take a little but usually bang on. The two weekends she's been with me she's up a little later because she sleeps in longer. So I shut all the lights off and say night night. It's very dark in my room and the house is quiet by 8:30. When I go to bed, usually around 10:30 - 11, she is usually asleep. However, she then wakes up 2-3 times during the night to eat, or stretch, or chat a little. I then wake her up in the morning and she is bright and cheery for most of the day. There are times, however, when I come upstairs to get her out and she is, as I call it, "chilling" - the classic one foot up, a little puffy, relaxed. She just spent 30 minutes sitting on a chair beside me doing this while I studied, at around 4:00pm. Is this normal or should she be going going going all day long? Sorry....it might be a ridiculous question. Thanks in advance Cassandra

Thanks everyone! She is quite small and rather dainty sometimes lol....she's 360 grams and it fluctuates very little.

GorgASS I'm so sorry to hear about your baby troubles and the breeder giving you a hard time. Personally, I can't imagine a breeder acting that way! That's terrible and you deserve a more caring breeder. In regards to the tests I just got my results from the vet yesterday and she did a few tests as well...the ones you mentioned and also a test for the top 4 common diseases. It is expensive but very worth it. About the veggies...try giving the babies some chopped up squash cooked or microwaved until it loses some colour and is kind of mushy...Darwin loooves it and so does a baby B&G macaw at the breeders I got my baby from. They also seem to love chopped up sweet potato. I have been giving Darwin, who is 16 weeks old now, a huge variety of mostly veggies + some fruit every day, usually raw. She gets some cooked veggies in the morning with some rice or whole wheat bread. When she was 2 months old she started on mango, bananas, and softer veggies such as kale or green pepper. She also loved raw broccoli when she was that age. They might throw it around, but that's showing interest and they'll try it as they play. HappyinGreece....it depends on the bird as far as size goes, I think. For now I'm giving Darwin a little of everything in all different sizes and am trying to figure out which she eats more of.

Thank you all so much for the support. I truly appreciate it.

After about a week of playing with the harness, and two days of having it just over her head...I have successfully gotten the little one into her Aviator harness!!!! Wooohooo! She squirms a bit and nips at it a bit but is easily distracted by a green bean or NutriBerry....

Hello! I know I said I'd have pictures a few days ago...sorry about the delay. It's been such a hectic week. Anyway.....IT'S A GIRL!!!!!! Darwin will keep her name but we now know that she is indeed a she!    I'm very excited and am definitely seeing the girly side to her. She also got a clean and perfect bill of health from the avian vet who is so taken by her. Lots of pictures to make up for the wait!

I especially love the one where ZZero and the dog are looking out the window. They remind me of an old married couple watching the sunset. Too cute!

LOL! That was hilarious the whole way through Pat. Darwin poops like a monster too! Some days are better than others but I remember when he was that small boy did he poop every 4 minutes or what! It gets better as they get older. I've been telling Darwin excitedly to "go poop!" every time he starts wiggling his bum and I think he's getting the idea. Have fun with your little Pooper!

I cannot imagine what you are going through. I'm so sorry to hear this. Find solace in your friends and family and I hope one day you can bring yourself to find another special bird. My condolences

My dog Wilbur passed away yesterday, March 30, around 3:30pm. He was my Christmas present when I was younger and came stumbling into my bedroom Christmas morning with a bow on his tiny head. He was a Schnoodle, a schnauzer/poodle cross, and lived a long life of eleven years. He had a few fat deposits as well as arthritis in his old age and was suffering quite a bit. He was also anemic. Despite all of this Wilbur was the most happy-go-lucky dog I've ever known. Even when we had to carry him up or down stairs, he'd be licking your face the whole way. You just had to enter the room and his tail was wagging. He does leave behind Tango, our Westie, who is missing him terribly and doesn't quite understand what is going on yet. He was greatly loved and it's very strange coming home to only one barking dog. I also want to share my appreciation at having a place to remember him. Cassandra

Oh I'll have pictures up within a day hopefully! Thanks everyone

Oh I've been meaning to post all week but have been so caught up in my little munchkin I haven't had the time! Get ready for a long winded one.... The breeder I picked Darwin out from has gotten very close to my boyfriend and myself in the past two months and it hit me last week.... My boyfriend was at the breeders last Saturday playing with his Amazon, Sammy, and I got a really strange text saying that we needed to talk about something. A few hours later and I finally convinced him to tell me what it was. He said that Darwin was ready to come home tomorrow (last Sunday). Apparently they had been tricking me for the past 3 weeks and I got to take him home a week earlier than anticipated!!!! I have now had Darwin for a week as of today and let me tell you, I love the little guy to pieces. He has tried so many different foods. Right now his favourites are banana, green beans, broccoli, leaf lettuce, squash and sweet potato. He also loves banana chips and mango. He eats everything readily and curiously and loves to try new foods. Now's the time, right! I took him to the vet on Friday and all is well. He is 360 grams and has gained a little weight. He loves foot toys and has a ton of them. I can't stop buying him things! One more thing, I hope I'm not boring you to death.... He had supper with the whole family tonight for the first time and was such a good boy! He sat happily on his perch and ate some rice and baby food and did step up practice with everyone. He makes the cutest noises when you scratch his neck and will let my dad flip him upside down, too! My that was long I apologize I'm just so excited he's finally home! Thanks for sharing this with me! Cassandra:lol:

I'm so very excited for you to have your own little baby! He/she is adorable. I especially love the last photo. So sweet!

Thanks so much Judy, he is quite pretty, isn't he? The breeder is convinced he is a girl but we shall see. Either way he/she will still be Darwin to me. And as for Sammy, she is a rehome. Overweight right now but is losing a little everyday with my boyfriend's hard work and her flapping her heart out. Thanks for looking at my many pictures! Cassandra:laugh:

While I'm on a picture roll, thought I'd share with you my boyfriend's Double Yellow Headed Amazon, Sammy. She's fifteen and loves to sing opera
