  1. Wow, some great pictures Jon. Meggie looks great and very confident. I did notice that you live in Florida, and from the pictures you are having some great weather. As a precaution, and because that is a large glass area behind Meggie's cage, I would be careful that it doesn't get too hot through the window. Our greys don't do well in full direct sunlight especially through glass. They can overheat and get dehydrated easily. I know they are from Africa but in Africa they have all that humidity and foliage over head to protect them from the blaring sun. I know my Ana Grey gets overheated if I take her outside when it is really hot and I live in Washington State. I only mention the overheating problem in case you go to school or work during the day and leave the blinds open and the sunlight comes in. I look forward to hearing more about Meggie and the new words and things you discover she can do as your relationship progresses.
  2. Ana Grey starting talking at about 10 months. She has always used phrases not just one word although I think I heard her say "Hello" once. She does a lot of whistling and can bark and caw like a crow. So I would continue to talk to your grey and continue with the whistles also. They seem to pick up what they like the sound of or what gets the most reaction. Sometimes when I talk to Ana Grey she cocks her head and listens intently watching the movements of my mouth. When she does this, I always repeat what she is so intent on over a couple of times. Her favorite phrase right now is, "Want some apple. I'll be good.' And of course I immediately get her some apple or other fruit so she will associate the phrase with fruit.
  3. I just read you 5/22/10 post Jon and it certainly sounds like Meggie is beginning to feel more comfortable with you and ready to join your flock. You have the right attitude. Patience and trust are what are necessary to cement a life long forever bond. I would love to see some pictures of Meggie if you have any to share. And I look forward to hearing more about this great relationship you and Meggie are forming.
  4. Per Jon's request, I am locking this thread.
  5. Thanks to all of you who have responded to this thread. I believe it is an interesting and necessary thing to talk about with your family and seriously consider when you plan the disposition of your estate.
  6. Brittany, Dan/danmcq started a "Parrot Bite Me Club" an eon ago, I have just made it a "sticky" thread so feel free to join the club!
  7. A slight correction is necessary here. Yes Dr. Edwards is decreased. Dr. Edwards was in his 60's and Dr. Starr in his 30's when they met. Dr. Albert Starr is now 83 years old, still resides in Portland, Oregon and still does consultations. He performed his last surgery in the 1980's. How do I know this, because I am still contacted once a year by his people.
  8. I'm very exciting for this first launching of the year!!!!! Now take it easy Bernie and don't push too hard. In other words no collisions or big owees!!!! Don't forget the camera and is Tiggs riding along????? Get him a crash helmet!!!!!!
  9. Congratulations Bernie, you should be proud. I can't wait to see the pictures of these "big shots." Now stiff upper lip, get on that monkey suit (formal wear) and toast the wedding couple for all of us!!!!
  10. That's a great idea Jen to be prepared in case of an emergency. I have a couple of travel cages like Judy's . They are fantastic and have enough room so that my fids can spread their wings and also be cozy. I also like the fact that I can fold them up and put them away no problem.
  11. Another great description of the Amazon of the Week!!!! Thanks Jay!
  12. That toast looks yummy!!!!! It's one of Ana Grey's favorites, toast and whatever!!!!
  13. Hey Clare, I already know that when you do get your grey, you're going to be an exceptional parront! I am totally glad to be considered your friend. Janet

  14. Hi Clare, not to worry you are entitled to a life besides your grey. I commend you for researching what it means to be a grey owner and not just jumping in. Some of our members are employed full time and their greys are just fine. Just give your grey quality time when you are home and see that your grey has lots of foraging and other toys to keep him busy. Also make sure before you leave for work that your grey has fresh water, pellets and other foods to snack on while you are gone. Leave a radio on or TV so that your grey has sounds to hear and learn to mimic from. I find kid channels to be very entertaining for my fids. Explain to your grey where you are going and acknowledge your grey when you come home. I don't work but my fids are in their cages from 7:00 pm to 10 am almost everyday. I am a night person and my grey does just fine with this schedule. But when I am up and home my fids' cage doors are always open and they are with me constantly. Consistency and a schedule of quality time is what your grey will want. And of course lots of good food. I can't wait to hear about your new grey when you get one.
  15. I have something to brag about, me, me, me!!!!! On May 18, 1976 I begin the First Day of the Rest of My Life!!!!! I received a Starr/Edwards heart value. I was 29 years old and very, very, very tired. Dr. Starr did this personally for me (I wish I had asked for an autograph, perhaps a tattooed star on my chest). He replaced my aortic value and then several holes where repaired in a couple of the chambers in my heart. On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helen blew and spread ashes all over Washington State to commensurate this great event for me and when the 30th anniversary of that mountain blowing came around I remembered it was 34 years since the healing of my broken heart. So remember life can be short don't sweat the small stuff, remember that we are all different and unique and something that has a meaning for you might have a totally different meaning for someone else. So respect each other and live life to the fullest so that you can go to sleep each night and ask, "Did I do anything today that I'm ashamed of?" And with a smile in your heart answer, "No." ~~This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.~~
  16. Great pictures of your drenched feather friends, Julie!!!!!
  17. I fed my fids their chopped fresh vegetables first in the morning when they are probably most hungry. I give a couple of pecans or cashews for treats during the day. Then I introduce some fruits, apples, tangerines, whatever in the afternoon. If my dinner is something they can eat they get some of that also. They get nuts and seeds when they are put into their cages at night. They always have pellets and dried vegetables and fruits in their cages during the day. This works for me and my fids. As long as your grey is healthy he won't starve himself so you are really in charge of what he is given to eat. The same as it is for children.
  18. Oh Ryan my heart bleeds for you, really!!!!! You know that Golden Rule aka the Rule of Karma, Whatever Goes Around Comes Around, so I will not be laughing at your predicament. Okay maybe a few well placed snickers!!!! All I can say is try to make the best of these new sounds and ignore them the best you can. Perhaps some earphones will help!!!! Sorry but I just can't help it!!! Revenge is sweet!!!!!! Thank you Paco!!!!! Ana Grey owes you one!!!! Thank you Ryan for this smile on my face!!!!! I hope your paper turns out with an A+. Honest!!!! Luv Ya Janet! How sweet it is!!!!!!
  19. Ouch!!!! They do have to keep us in line don't they. Ana Grey gets a little over ambitious when it comes to wanting head scratches and more head scratches or a piece of whatever I am eating and she wants that last bite!!!! Just like any little kid!!!
  20. Your baby certainly is a cutie. I'm so glad all is going well for your sweet baby!
  21. Very excited for this coming adventure!!!! Can't wait to see some great pictures!
