  1. After Jades post about Shadow I thought I would post a bit about some things most of us don't think about. The doggie door was a good example. Mine is the kitchen. I know everyone goes on about the nonstick on pans and how they got rid of them. But it doesn't matter what kind of pans you have and are cooking with when it comes to birds. Flighted or not. I lost my tiel to a very tragic accedent. She was out and on my daughters sholder when she something startaled her. She flew off of my daughters sholder and into the kitchen. Where I had a pot of boiling water going. She landed in that pot. She managed to get herself out then flew down the stairs to the back door where we cought up with her. Somewhere along the way she lost a toenail. I got the bleeding stopped. I could only call the vet because I had no car (had recently been in a car accedent). The vet said just to put her back in her cage and let her rest. She seemed to be doing good the rest of the day. But when we got up the next morning she had passed away. She died of the trama and stress. I now have a beaded curtain over the doorway to the kitchen. The birds are not allowed in the kitchen under any cercomstances if I'm cooking. The curtain works well. Alex and my daughters gcc have both flowen into it but never made it past. They end up holding on.
  2. They are all just beautiful birds! I still want your job Berna!
  3. That is a very average price for a hycinth. They have a very spicalized diet. You need lots of money to be able to keep one feed properlly. From a breeder expect about $800 to $900 for a grey. From a bird store $950 to $1100.
  4. ROFL! Ok would have been having the heart attack with you but laughing at the same time! They are to smart for thier own good sometimes!
  5. If you like the look of the wood I would go with some of Dan's ideas to ruff up the wood. If you don't care then the vet wrap is the way to go.
  6. I want your job Berna! Lucky! I'm with lovemygreys we need pictures! {Nature-00020095}
  7. I'm in southern CA so no way I can make the trip. Becides need to start helping my son save for the pionus that he wants.
  8. If it helps any this is how my birds are set up. It is an old picture from when we still had Maggie. The only thing that has changed is that it is now Martini in the smaller cage and a second play area above the cage. But you still get the idea.
  9. Your guess is as good as mine. We have had Martini (senegal) for about 6 weeks now and Alex is still harassing him. I hate coming back into the living room and having to hunt for him. He is hard to spot sometimes as most of our stuff is green and he blends in! We have started ignoring Alex when he is on Martini's cage. We just pick Martini up from where ever he has fluttered to and pay attention to him. Alex of corse throws a tantrum and dumps Martini's water dish. But we just ignore him (clean up later). It's helped some but it's not totally fixed yet. Any other ideas would be great!
  10. The only time I worry about Alex chewing a hole in a shirt is if I'm trying to file his nails. Then I wear one of my old working around the house shirts. Otherwise it doesn't matter what I'm wearing he will still crawl all over me. No holes yet.
  11. Cuttle bones are also full of calcium. Maggie loved them but Alex totally ignores them.
  12. That is such a cool painting! Yep me too, I so would have hung it right away! I want one!
  13. Alex is a cag and into everything. He is totally all over anything new.
  14. Yes beak peeling is normal to all birds.
  15. Yours are more fun! I find the store bought ones just boring.
  16. What is happening is normal. Thier beaks grow in layers and as the old layers start to chip or flake off they can change color. The whole frunt of Alex's beak is like this. It is odd to see because his is a strip down the center of his beak. It just hasn't chipped off yet. Where it has is the very black.
  17. The loss of a companion is always devistating! I am so sorry for your loss!
  18. It is a trust thing. If he wont move when you are holding him then he is afraid of something. You need to figure out what he is scard of. I can't keep Alex in one place when he is on me. He even hangs off of my shirt. So filping him upside down is just part of what he does anyway. He is 13 months old and we are just now getting to a point of him letting me hold him on his back. Even then he wont always let me do it.
  19. See that is my problem with Alex he likes stuff but doesn't go nuts for anything. He is also moody about food. Somedays he can't get enough of something and then other days he totally ignores the same food.
  20. Wow really? I've only spent about $100 total and made 4 gyms. I have one for at my oldest daughters.
  21. Alex likes almonds and pine nuts are on the just ok list. He likes grapes fineally. But again it's not enough to get him to do stuff for. Hemp seeds were suggested to me but I haven't had a chance to run over to the health food store.
  22. LOL Yhea I have a picture of him in the tree. I'll have to look for it though. I got a new computer and don't have all of my pictures any more.
  23. Very nice! Looks like they are really enjoying them!
  24. Try different kinds of nuts and see what he likes best. So far I haven't been able to find anything that Alex will do anything for except cheese. But that wouldn't be good for trainig he would get to much of it. So for me the serch continues. Though he does respond pretty well to prase but not all the time. If he doesn't feel like doing something he just wont do it.
