AGC parrot brought home yesterday
Carolyn replied to udbluehen's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Mika goes out with me each day for a walk, he is wearing a Aviator Harness, it took about 3 weeks for him to be comfortable wearing it, and for me to be just as comfortable to be able to put it on him. Now mind you Mika is only 5 months old right now and a little more acceptable to new things, and new ideas. -
Just wondering, if cat food both wet and dry could hurt Mika? Right now when he is allowed on the floor he rushs right in to the kitchen to help himself to the cat bowls. I have to be 1 step ahead of him with them picked up, but he scouts around for a left over kibble and grabs and runs. Will this do him any harm? Carolyn & Mika

We were awoken early this morning 2a.m. by firemen telling us to leave the house due to the neighbor 2 doors down house was on fire, cars had to be moved from the driveways immediately. Hubbie grabbed keys and the dog moved one car, I rounded up cat, he returned to get the cat and move the second car. That left me with one very very upset, scared bird- with the lights flashing in the windows and all the noise he was truly terriorized growling and shreeking. He has been in the carrier a few times before but still it had never been under threatning situation, and he was already scared. As scared as I was decided to grad his towel, grab him wrap him in the towel and put him and the towel in my pyjames top. Grabbed the carrier and we left. He was screaching and very upset with all that was going on. We went to a neighbors up the street to try and settle him and get him into his carrier, went into a quite bathroom and sitting on the floor started to unwrap him, he was going to have nothing to do with a carrier and wanted to hang on to me. I borrowed a sweat top and decided to just carry him close to me so he could feel the warmth and hear he talking to him, even if he was tucked under it, between the top and my skin. There he stayed for the next 2 hours travelling with me. Everything was under control and we were able to return to our house, let Mika out of his sweat shirt cage he settled very well back on to the top of his cage and with in a half an hour was eating and talking jibberish and telling you all about his newest experience. This incident turned out to be all right, but it really made me wonder are we ready when things just happen. Please think about this and don't live in the myth that "it won't happen to me" plan a escape route not only for your family but who will take the responcibility of getting the bird or birds out, and then where do you go. We have my hubbie & I, 1 cat, 1 dog, and a pond full of Koi out the back and of course Mika.

Mika is only 5 months old, but he has found that to annoy the cat (who completely ignores him) but likes to sleep under the cage, Mika drops plastic water bottle caps on his head. He looks over when he is on his playgym spots the cat and rushes over to get the caps. This is so funny to watch, but the cat still goes back and has not learned if he just backed up a little Mika would not be able to see him. But to watch Mika check all sides to see if the cat is there is very funny. If hes not oh well back to other things. Carolyn & Mika

Just thought this might be of interest to you darth: The first step in making rawhide chews is transportation of animal's hide to processing plants where it is split, washed with degreasers and detergents, and cleaned. The completely clean rawhide is then sterilized in hydrogen peroxide at the required temperature for the required amount of time. This also has a desired side effect of making the rawhide the yellow-white color you are familiar with. Carolyn & Mika
-
Wish I could have seen that darth, let me no what you find. As I said it was not the rawhide but the tanning process they use, you may very well be able to soak it out.{Feel-good-0002006E} Carolyn & Mika

Toni, I purchased a Webkin Macaw for Mika, I sliced open the bottom and took out all the beads they had in there and re-sewed it up he loves it. I started to do his harness training with the Macaw wareing it and sitting on the table, also started playing with the wings of the stuffed animal to let Mika no that it was all right. He loves it. He also has his little grey seal stuffy that he has has since he hatched it is still in his cage and he drags it about and up on to the top of his playstand. I think he may use this as his security blanket (have to steal it away for the washer) but he loves that stuffey. Carolyn & Mika

I have the same concerns as Broomer, what trees are safe to cut for stands and perchs? Do you leave the bark on or off? Carolyn & Mika

Christian Please don't leave this forum in a fit of temper because he or she said, people are only offering you their advise. And that comes fom many years of experience. I am twice your age and just have my new Grey he is only 5 months old, I decided to wait a little longer and to have him weaned before I took him, because of my life style, I work outside the home all day. I purchased every book I could to read before Mika arrived and thought I was well prepared but please believe me I wasn't. I found this site about 2 days after Mika arrived and have had more questions and concerned answered than any book I could have read. I am not saying by any means not to read books, they are a good source of information, but you can never turn your back on peoples experiences. Post, listen, and learn I am and enjoy your little guy if you choose not to take someones advise keep reading the posts if you find they are all saying the same thing, there maybe truth to it. In life there are all experiences some good and some bad, we learn fast from the bad. You have had a bad experience, learn from it and grow. There is not one person here that over the years have not had a bad experience but as you can see fromm all the posts, they ask questions. I will not judge you nor will I agree with some of your decisions, but I will ask that you let this experience drop and stay and learn and ask as many questions as you can. If you have to leave your little guy, ask what other people do in that situation. You may find alternatives or a way around problems. I can only say that with out all the help I get on a daily basis here I would be having a lot of problems, please let us enjoy both you and your little guy and lots of pics of him growing up. For both of you this experience can only do you good, it has me and I am talking only for my self. Good luck to both of you, Carolyn & Mika

Sorry I forgot to ask, do you dilute it down or use it right out of the bottle? Also while the bird is still wet or wait till dry? Carolyn & Mika
