Everyday Woody gets 1/8 of a cup of Harrisons Pellets, Nutriphase seeds and something called fruit blend. I put it all in his bowl and that is what he get's all day, just that one bowl. (This is the diet his previous owner had him on). We snack through the day, about 5 almonds and one or two 'power treats' and maybe a thin apple slice. I am wondering though, this doesn't seem like a lot of food to me. He usually finishes the whole bowl by noon (breakfast is at 9:30). Are more snacks ok? How much does your Grey eat? How many times? How much snacking is too much snacking? It just seems to me like I'm starving him..he doesn't look starved, but he is always hungry..could he just be a pig? Thanks in advance!

So, I guess I am a little slow on reading this topic....but.. OH. MY. GOD!! I can't believe some people would do this, grr, I just want to choke them! Maybe a strongly worded email would be more socially accepted though... I'm glad you kept the post up! {Emotions-00020060} -
My prayers are with the family! Please keep us updated!

Couple Of Grey Questions From Potential Owner
Anmlhggr replied to RobertsKitty's topic in The GREY Lounge
Hello! I'm glad your doing your homework before getting a Grey! My Grey, Woody, lives with me in my apartment, and sometimes he can get a little vocal. He doesn't scream, but he will cycle through his small vocab of phrases. If I leave the apartment and he starts chatting to himself, and I can hear him in the hallways However, he doesn't seem to bother anyone. I'd say a Grey works fine in an apartment! -
Oh, this post was so good to read! My Grey, while not loooving my boyfriend, doesn't seem to really like me lol Now, I've only had him for about two weeks, but he still won't let rub his head or anything other than step up. Now I know some tricks though, mwahaha!

Wow, that is completely appalling. Most likely some 'backyard' person who said "Oh I have two grey's, might as well breed them and make a buck or two" God, It's INFURIATING!! I'm glad that scar is doing better, make sure to keep us informed! When is the court date?

That's a good idea! I put some treats in an old TV dinner box after Woody destroyed the last one...hoping for him to be able to play some 'foraging' games. thanks!!

Hmm, Woody literally just sits either in his cage, on his play stand, or on his perch that rests on my desk. I'll I've found so far is that he likes to chew up stuff. He came with TONS of toys, none of which he touches...he won't let me rub/pet/love on him quite yet... The toys he has now are climbing ones for the most part...any ideas on other types of toys?

I think I'm going to have my dad make one...he said he might for my B-day

Hmm, it looks like bird talk takes the cake! Thanks folks!!

So, I'm considering getting a subscription to a bird magazine, however, I am torn between which ones to get. I would like to have one that is "Hard-copy", not an online subscription. I'm Looking at either Bird Talk, or Bird Times. Does anyone subscribe to these? What is the major difference between one and another? Do you subscribe to something else possibly? Thanks much! -Amberly

Hmm, I wake up around 7:30-8:00 ... crash for nap around 11:30, bed time at night around 11:00 pm. An adventure pack, eh? I've never heard of those...I'll check Google hehe  I didn't know if covering the cage would be all right, I guess that is what I was wondering deep down, I know at the Office (I work at a Vet's) we don't cover the dogs/cats until night... Thanks M!
-
Oh, the one he has I keep in the dining area with me....I was thinking about getting a 'mini cage' to put in the bed room so he can be with me when I nap (I haven't noticed him napping yet lol) and that way he will be safe if the cat got loose
-
His cage is with me most of the time, and usually he sits in it until I get a proper play stand. ...I don't understand your question Sio
-
So, Woody has been with me for about a week now. (One week and one day!) A little background info..he is a 6 year old male, and a rescue/previously owned. I put his cage in my 'dining area' because that is where my desk is as well. I spend most of my time there. Well, any time I leave the room he starts talking. Not like screaming bloody murder, but going through his vocabulary of words in a random order. This includes his previous owner's dogs barking, whining, howling, fire alarms, duck noises, monkey noises and a couple phrases of "Go bucks!" or "Helloooo pretty bird". Now, when he lived with Laureen I'm not sure if she came running when he did this, but I do THINK (I'm not sure) that he is trying to get my attention, or get me back in the room. Is he having separation anxiety? Because when I do come back in, and try to get him to step up he doesn't want to do it and he moves to the walls of the cage so I can't get him to step up. This happens mostly when I am trying to take a nap. If I get a play stand and put it in my bedroom, do you think that would help? Maybe a 'mini cage' (I don't know how I feel about just letting him sit there 'unattended' while I'm sleeping (with him on a play stand) but is it 'humane' to have him in a little cage while I'm asleep? I know that if I cover him he will be quiet, but I only feel comfortable covering him at night, you know? My boyfriend (and my neighbors I'm sure! as I'm in an apartment complex) are getting a little frustrated. I'm trying to ignore him when he does this, but so far it does not seem to be working - and I just want some conformation that I am / or am not doing the right thing (or on the right track). Thanks in advance, sorry for the novel lol -Amberly

My CAG, woody, pays a lot of attention to me when he is away from his cage....if we're in sight of it though...well, then we're back to paper clip attention span
-
Thank you for the ideas! I definitely stopped by the pets section and the kids section tonight at walmart lol..still no luck. But I put a PLAY stand on my birthday list...so maybe the BF or parents/sibs will get me and woody one

So, Woody came with a play stand, however - to me- this does not look like fun. I have the set of toys you see on there, but he just sits on the perch, and doesn't leave that spot. Is this not a play stand, but something else? Since this is all I have at the moment, how can I make it more enriching? Thanks!

Is an African Grey right for my family?
Anmlhggr replied to AmanderaaLynn's topic in The GREY Lounge
Everyone who has spoken before me has hit the nail on the head. I JUST got my first Grey two days ago, and he is a handful! And I am 20... I've found that having an African Grey is exactly like having a child..are you ready to have a child? I'm glad that you posted this before you went and got one, thank you. -
Thank you all for your kind words of relief! Today we did step up practices again in our 'neutral' area and he did great! Still having trouble getting him out of the cage though...
