The pics are adorable! I am glad to hear that everything is going well.

Thanks for all of your input. I really am glad that she is accepting him again. His pouting when Whisper tried to bite him was tiring:P I feel better now. Thanks for the encouragement. She was all I had for so long and we have such a close bond I would never want to lose it.

I had been seeing little rolls of paper offered by bird toy manufacturers. I was in a thrift store the other days and there was huge box of rolls of paper like you would use in a calculator. I bought 8 of them for 25 cents each. Is there any reason you know of that the paper would not be safe for my birds to chew on. There is not any info on them about manufacturer or anything but I thought it was a great deal. It does not appear to be coated with anything.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/10/15 20:48

Whisper is going through a molt right now so maybe that is what is happening with Beau too.

My husband and I recently reconciled after being seperated for nearly a year. I had just gotten Whisper a few months prior to the seperation and she was not really talking much when he moved out. For so long it has been only Whisper and I and some of you might remember her sweet little southern voice from her videos. Everthing she said was exclusively in my voice. My husband moved back in about 6 weeks ago and has been trying hard to make friends with Whisper again. This has required a lot of bribing with almonds but she will now let him pick her up. I am glad for this but now she talks almost exclusively in his voice. The 4-5 things that he says to her all the time are almost the only things she says lately. She seems to have forgotten the nearly 100 phrases she used to say. I really liked her little sweet voice and now it is a manly voice. She seems to be stuck on "Hey Whisper, wanta go get an almond?" He is home more than I am and I am also a little worried and jealous that she will choose him as her favorite. I know many others have had the "favorite" problem..does anyone have any ideas about why she likes his voice so much even though for the time being she still loves me best?

How is his weight. If you are hand feeding and weaning I hope you are monitoring the weight. 9 weeks is kind of young for a Grey to wean.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/10/15 12:43

I am sure you have heard it before but my advice is to ignore it. NO REACTION whatsoever when it happens. Not even a giggle. Teach him new words and the others will fade to the back of his list of vocabulary. And under no circumstances should he hear the words again. I think that is the best you can do. Whisper has learned a bunch of new things lately and I cannot get her to say some of my old favorites no matter how much I try.

Whisper does not make those sounds yet but once when i farted she said "OOPS". She also says "I gotta go pee".

That is hilarious!

Very cute video and really cute bird but what amazes me is that someone would let their bird play in the dog house. Talk about bacteria! Not to mention the chemicals the dog has probably been treated with for fleas. It could not be safe conditions for a bird.

The others have given very good advice. I will just add my experience with Whisper. She can be very hard to figure out sometimes. Today for instance she was in a bad mood from the moment she woke up this morning. Acting nippy and skittish. After watching her for a while I decided she may not have gotten enough sleep last night since we stayed up late even though we put the birds to bed at 8:00 the t.v. may have been too loud. I put her in the bird room and turned the lights off for her to have a good nap. Hopefully when I get her up later she will be in a better mood. How much sleep does your bird get each night? This can really affect their mood.

I no longer use any kind of candles, scented oils or air fresheners. They are not safe for birds.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/10/11 19:50

I don't let my birds chew on any questionable metals including keys.

I like cooler temps in the house in the winter time. Around 68 but Whisper is not happy with it that cool. I have to keep it at least 72 for her to be comfortable. Honestly..you can see the difference in her mood and everything the moment the temp goes up. My avian vet advises 72-74 degrees. And yes, I know she can tolerate it lower but she just is not happy at cooler temps.

The longest ride I have taken Whisper on was 1 1/2 hrs to the vet. We did not have any problem. She just scratched and wanted out of the carrier the entire time.

What an amazing bird. Thanks for sharing that.

Congrats on your new Grey. The DNA is around 25-30 dollars. There are health reasons to know the sex so your vet will probably advise it. For instance only females would have egg binding. Which is a very dangerous condition that would need to be diagnoses very quickly if it arose. If you had a male it could be very beneficial for the vet to be able to rule it out immediately.

Whisper also carries her food outside the cage to eat. Not sure why. I have found that a large towel down instead of newspapers it does not scatter quite so badly.

Sachi sure is a beautiful bird! It tried to convince the breeder that I got my DYH from that he needs to breed Pionus.

That is hilarious! I wish I could have been there to see it but your story was so well told I almost feel like I was there.

Whisper came from a pet store. My son knew I was thinking of getting a grey and told me he saw some there. I went in to check them out. They had 2 from the same clutch that had just finished weaning. Whisper was the smallest. When I held her she would gently put her beak on my finger but would not bite down. I chose her because of her gentleness. She is still a little sweetheart who has never bitten me hard.

Has Dexter been to the vet lately? I ask because of your statement that he wants to sit in the cage and bites when you try to take him out. You see I have never had to "take" Whisper out of her cage. She always comes running out when I open the door. Seriously, If my bird suddenly started acting off and did not want to come out of the cage, the first thing I would do is take her to the vet.
