1. You know you are losing it when you ask the birds if they know where the remote control is. I am not kidding! I was lookin for the remote this morning so I could set the t.v. up for the birds and I was kind of distracted. As serious as could be, I said "Girls do either of you know where the remote is?" When I realized what I had done I felt ridiculous. I guess that come with old age and living alone except for the birds.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/09 21:40

So cute..

That is hilarious.
3. Congrats on Zel coming home! Just take it slow and easy. It took Whisper a while to settle in when I first got her. She is going to the top of the cage because being up high makes a bird feel more secure and she is just feeling very insecure right now. You can tell if they are eating if they are pooping. What goes in, must come out.

help

I got Whisper a large playstand and she never would go on it. I left it in the room with her for months but no go. I bought her a smaller one and she finally went on it after a month of it being in the same room with her, I would move it to different places in the room. Sometimes closer and sometimes farther away. Finally she accepted it. The Cockatoo LOVES the big stand.
5. Ahhh. That is so sweet.

At this point the only thing that is holding me back is the dust. It must be that the combination of the 2 dustiest birds possible is too much for me. Just like TycosMom. I have been having allergy problems ever since she came here. She is soooo sweet though. To tell you the truth I have not been trying toohard to find her a home. Kinda waiting to see if this allergy thing is a coincidence. Besided that my DYH Amazon that I have been waiting on just hatched yesterday at the breeders. If it is female it is mine. 8. I would not do it. I also cannot believe that she would allow an outside bird into her aviary. And to answer your questions.. yes PBFD can be transmitted by feather dust which can be blown about in the air.

Thanks guys! yes the U2 is gorgeous. She is female 2 yrs old. If I don't find her a home soon, whisper and I are going to be too attached to let her go.

I finally got around to taking some new photos of Whisper. The Cockatoo is the one I posted about in the rescue forum.
11. That was a very touching read. I recently rescued an Umbrella Cockatoo that I am trying to find a good home for. When I went to see her the owner could not even pick the bird up. It was trying to bite her. She was flicking the birds beak with her finger to try to stop it. Stupid woman! All that does is teach a bird that it cannot trust your hands. She bit me once when I first got her home but I have not had any trouble since then handling her at all. She was in a filthy cage and sick and they did not even know or care that she was sick. She has now been treated for her infection and is doing well. She loves to be petted and scratched and will sit on my lap like a baby. Now that she has been here a while I am starting to understand more of what she is saying. Today she said "SHUT UP!" Wonder where she heard that. I swear people ought to have to take a test and get a permit in order to have a bird. It makes me mad that there are so many idiots out there with these precious creatures depending on them for care. Okay I will get off my soapbox now.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/06 04:16
12. I am so happy for you and Jake. Thank God for that wonderful woman who found him and contacted you.
13. I have heard so much about how hard it is on a bird to rehome it but this Cockatoo I have rescued does not seem to be fazed at all. I can't tell she misses her former home at all. Apparently Charlie is not having any problems either.
14. I think she wants the attention.
15. How much undisturbed sleep time does the bird get? I leave the television on for mine tuned to a childrens channel but I have it on a timer to go off so she can rest in the afternoon. I found she was cranky on the days I left it on all day. Greys need attention and stimulation but they also need some quiet time too.
16. If your bird seems okay otherwise I would not worry about it. It is probably just an anomaly as Judy said. Look at all the red factor greys. They are not supposed to have red feathers but genetic things happen. I have learned that any little thing and the vets want to start running expensive tests even if your bird is fine. That is how they make their living. There is a reason why they call it "practicing" medicine.
17. Since the bird is so young I would just about bet the cause here is physical. He may even have picked up a bacterial infection from the dogs kissing him through the cage. I would get him to a vet asap. It can start out as a physical reason and if it goes on long enough it can become habit.
18. It will take time for him to get used to them. Have you tried the Harrison's Treats. I think they have a little bit of a sweet taste to them and might help to switch over since they look very similar to the pellets. You are only supposed to give them 3-5 a day though. Whisper loves them. She was weaned on to the Harrison's and loves it. She will eat that before anything else. I did not think she would go for the treats since they look just like the pellets but she can tell the difference and gets really excited to get them. The treats have lots of good things in them including red palm oil.
19. Yeah the greys looks just thrilled to be there.
