1. Like Tracy just pointed out, ask your breeder anything you want to know. A good breeder will be happy to answer any questions you have. My breeder and I talked on the phone all the time, and that was after the sale. From the picture your grey is full flighted, so he will be able to learn how to fly. The mucky beak is too cute...he's got such a pretty face!
2. Gosh, it was just the other day he was a tiny little thing and now look at him!
3. Yeah, Otto always clung to the sides when he was in the carrier. I hae Elmo harness trained so I let him sit on my shoulder if the traffic is light and it's a short trip and he loves to bark at the other cars and watch the world go by. Awhile back I took him to the vet and I had him in the carrier so on the way back I opened the carrier to let him out because he seemed to be a bit mad at me. The door was wide open and I kept sayin' "come on out Elmo!" He stuck his head out, grabbed the door, and shut it!!!! I could not believe my eyes! One of the funniest things he has ever done.
4. LOL...I think babies are cute! Congrats on the new baby!!! Baby finches look like half chewed jelly beans that have been under a couch for 2 weeks.:woohoo:
5. You might be better off with a baby because I have noticed with some of the older birds they do best when they pick the person they go to. Baby birds do good with just about everyone. If there was a rescue you could go to that would be cool, but if you have to have a bird shiped to you that probably could give you headaches you don't want to deal with if you got a older bird.
6. The store I work at has rope perches that have a plastic cap that screws over the bolt, not a wingnut that would ruin a cover. I don't know if that would be something you would be looking for.
7. yes...only a vet should give a dosage amount. Finches get .05ml of the Iverm. so it's pretty exact on how much to dose.

Molting

No prob. Elmo is coming into a molt...he just lost his first tail feather. Most parrots start a molt in the tail, wings, or on the neck. It seems the greys like to start on the back of the neck most of the time.
9. Yes, like Tracy said over the counter meds are not as good at treating anything as the meds the vet gives. I believe it was SCATT that "burned" the skin off a Euro-Goldfinch that a customer brought into the store for advise on. I use Ivermectin on the finches at the store that may have mite infections. I know the dosages for finches but with greys I got no clue.
10. Happy Hatchday Klaus! Did you get him any toys? I already started shopping for Elmo's H-day...he'll be a year on the 27th. On Xmas I wrapped his gifts and he went to town on them so I'm going to wrap his gifts for him again.

Molting

Around a year old give or take.
12. {Characters-00020059} Hahaha Dan, you better watch it, Judy is going to mess your day up. Seems as though I have turned into Judy's beagles...pick a fight and watch the fireworks!!!:woohoo:  :silly: :cheer: I'm with Judy...if more people were to do the hours of research into parrot ownership there would be a much less need for rescue orginizations. As for the stupid questions, we have even had someone ask about "male anatomy" parts of their grey so if we didn't mind that than you can ask ANYTHING on this forum!

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/11 18:24
13. Well, if treatment has not been started yet everything they come in contact with should be treated like it's contaminated. If I was you I would get both birds started on a treatment and then go to town cleaning anything and everything they touch. I would start disinfecting everything two or tree times a week as well. To keep things in check I would keep what they contact to a minimum and not allow them to go "free range". Be sure to also disinfect yourself and change clothes between birds as well.
14. Well Corrigan, if being a pest around here got you kicked off Judy would have been gone a LONG time ago!!! {Feel-good-0002006E} Ooohhhh I just had to take the shot Judy...hahaha...I'm just kidding:kiss: ! We would rather have a MILLION simple questions than one sad story, so ask away! It's very good to hear your looking for a weaned baby, I have seen too many people that go out and buy babies only weeks old and know nothing about hand feeding and weaning. And as for getting everything ready ahead of time, your doing what everyone that did their homework does. Having a nice "home" set up before the arival is the best thing for making the transition a smooth one.
15. Are you planning on a "baby" baby grey or a weaned baby grey? I just read through your post in thw welcome room **Welcome** and saw that you don't have a grey yet but are looking. I would first like to say when it comes to getting a grey, don't buy an UNweaned baby. So many things can go wrong, from nasty infections, crop burns, even death. Any breeder willing to sell a baby bird to someone without experiance should not be bought from...they are for sure in it just for the money and not for the wellfare of the birds and you could end up with more heart-ache than it's worth. Find a breeder that sells weaned babies, Birdtalk mag is also a pretty good place to look...they have listings in the back for breeders in each state. Ok, now for the toys. A baby grey will play with anything an adult grey would play with after they are weaned. I have plenty of foot toys for my grey, along with wood block toys, toys with bells and rattles, and different textures. My grey...who is just shy of a year old now...still has his stuffed bear from when he was a baby and I catch him snuggling it now and then when he naps. You may want to get a little stuffed toy for your grey so he doesn't feel so alone when he first arrives. Any stuffed toy will due as long as the fur is short and there are no small parts that your grey could choke on (eyes, nose)...so think toddler stuffed toys.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/10 19:27

Coco

It depends...Ronda's grey had a very bad flight and is still not 100%, other birds will be fine within hours. How long have you had Coco and is there any "bagage" like Ronda's grey?
17. Also, don't use over the counter mite meds for the birds ether. I have seen a couple birds that have had what looks like the skin of their legs burned off by improper use and dosage...an Avain vet can give you the proper meds.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/10 17:28
18. First, if you think the keet has scaly face your grey is in Major risk of getting it too if they are near each other. They should not share ANYTHING and be separated ASAP till they BOTH have been checked out by an avian vet, although the damage may have already been done. I know most people don't want to take a keet to the vet because they are cheap birds, but if you don't get it cleared up in BOTH birds it will never go away and you will have two disfigured at best birds in the not so distant future...or dead birds if gone untreated. Scaly face also affects the feet...it's called tassle foot...and you are discribing what would be a mite infectation on your grey so this is not something that I would take lightly. Here is a couple pics of what the scaly face mite can do to birds.
19. Elmo has gotten the idea that he is not allowed anywhere near the new laptop. When he wants attention he will act like he is going for it but stops at the last second and looks at me.
20. It also says that you have to pay $257.00 for the USDA vet to look at your bird...overtime charges apply if the bird arrives before or after the "vet hours". The laboratory fee for the swab is $48.00. The import permit fee is $94.00. Thats over $400 dollars JUST to get your bird BACK in the USA.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/07 14:17
21. I wouldn't think that is was due to stress if he was eating and had seemed to settle down a bit. A necropsy should be a MUST for your sister. Please keep us all updated.
22. The only downfall to them is that they can get as loud as Sun Conures...but when you have full sized macaws that's not really an issue. :silly: I tell people they are not the best to have in appartments.
