Also, why didn't you say anything about YOUR grey in the post...all you wrote was how good a mimic they are, referring to all greys in general? Did you think that ALL of us on the forum, that already own greys, didn't know how good of a mimic they are?!?!?...and if you really had one you would not refer to them as mimics because they use the sounds and speech they learn cognitively.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/18 14:52 -

Really...you live in Tennessee. Then where are you from originally because your English sucks. If your going to insult Americans, check your spelling first. -
Knight05 wrote: Collars should be the LAST resort and really are only used to stop mutilation that has lead to an infection, not plucking. You used smoking as an example, and I'm betting your not a smoker. If you take cigs away from someone for a few days, almost every person will smoke next chance they get. It's not just a physical addiction, but behavioral as well. If a person does not make the choice to quit they won't...not even if they are forced to for a week. The same thing is true for parrots as well. The preening toys are a good idea...place them by the bowl if that is where Makena seems to do it all the time. A vet check should be concidered if it turns out to not be just a molt to rule out any physical reason for the feather distruction.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/18 05:52

I would like to add for anyone looking for any parrot in the USA, in 92' the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species bannedthe importation of parrots into North America so if there is someone trying to sell you a grey, ligit or not from overseas, you would never see it. -
I'm with you Marlene!!! I clip wings and nails at the pet store and there have been a few birds that have come in that I could have killed someone for. One that comes to mind is a beautiful Blue Front Amazon that had ALL the feathers clipped off...and not just the flight feathers, the colvert feathers and all going all the way to the skin. I stormed out of the back room and asked the people who they had clip the birds wings before and I'm betting itwas them because they couldn't give me an answer. I brought them into the back and showed them how horrible the wong looked and explained it was a wonder the birds keel wasn't shattered. I grabbed one of the macaws off the floor and showed them what the wings should look like and told them to bring the bird in after a few feathers came in on each wing and I would show them how far back was exceptional...and then told them that having other people do the clip was better anyways...it's not as bad if the bird is mad at me.

 Yeah, Elmo is such a pretty girl. He (I call her a he) I'm pretty sure he is starting to molt so i hope he gets some more pink on him.

Congrats on the new baby...I'm so happy for you!!! Baby greys learn who you are very quick...esp. when you are the person feeding them. I'm sure Dennis already knows who you are! The finger nipping is normal for a hand feeding baby, they seem to think food will come out of fingers or something. All I did was kept my fingers out of beaks reach. I wouldn't use a "deterant" because you do want your baby to like hands and finers for scratches and the nasty taist may make him not like fingers at all. I've never hear of needing to massage an empty crop. All you need to do is make sure you don't over fill or over heat the food and burn it. A healthy crop will empty without any help so I wouldn't worry about it. Elmo loved corn when he was little. I would try giving Dennis apple sause (cold or room temp), grapes, bluebarries, pitted cherries...all that good stuff. POST PICS SOON!!!!

That is SUCH a scam! When I was selling my car on craiglist I had a guy saying he was a pastor and wanted to car...I don't know what a pastor would want with an 85' Trans Am with a snapped crank shaft, but anyways. I was selling the car for $1,000 and he sent me a check for $3,500 and when I asked him when his shipper would be coming he said I had to western union the money to them...at that point I knew it was a scam. People like them make me sick. -
And yeah...don't EVER take your grey back to them, because someone that does that don't know what they are doing.
-
It can take up to a year for the next molt if he just went through one. The best thing to do would be not to carry him over hard floors until he knows he can't glide anymore. Pad the floor around the cage incase he tries to fly off it.

Is it vomiting or regurgitating? Gurging is normal, but if it's vomiting you need to take her in to an avian vet ASAP! Birds hide illness to the point that when they start to show clinical symtoms they are already VERY sick.

I was watching TV in bed with my Grey and the both of us fell asleep...me on my side and the grey on my head. I'm not sure what happened...if I moved or the grey did...but somehow he fell off my head, slid down my face and was grabbing for anything that he could get his foot around to catch himself. Well guess what he grabbed? My top eyelid of my right eye. I'm not sure how I managed it but I was able to roll with him as he latched on and had him on his back with my face over him. It was a good 30-40 seconds before I was able to calm him and remove his toe from inside my eye without more damage. I'm pretty sure there isn't much more than a scrach on the inside of my eyelid and it should be better in a few days but I am worried about infection so I asked a girl working at the eye doctors inside the WalMart what I should be watching out for. Needless to say I got the "what the ____" look from everyone that could hear me and the girl I was asking was a bit speechless and had to have me repeat exactly what got in my eye.

I would say as well a vet check is a must. I'm not sure about egg binding being any kind of an issue, but it could be something wrong with the gut. Also, what kind of diet is she on? I know people have to run to the bathroom non stop if they eat something that doesn't agree with them, maybe your grey has a food allergy?

 Yes, when Elmo gets a Boo-Boo. When he was a baby he bobbed on one of his toys trying to get food out of it and got a bump next to his beak. I rubbed the aloe on it and it healed right up. I got one worse than ALL of you...any of you remember the bird claw under the eyelid!
-
Yeah, don't water it down...works much better strait from the bottle. Now, aloe gel should not be used at all. Most of the time there are weird additives in the bottles gels. I have aloe plants growing in big pots on my porch I use for birdy booboos...nothing but natural aloe in the plant.
-
It's in the Pharmacy department...with the constipation stuff. LOL! The "dirty bird" smell I notice on Elmo is just a noticable bird smell...not really musty, but like a stale smell. I could only smell it when he is right under my nose but after a bath you don't smell it anymore. When he was a baby he always smelled like the formula.
-
I tell everyone to use the Aloe Juice. If you already spray your bird why not. Elmo doesn't have any issues with dry skin or plucking, but after an Aloe bath he smells nice...it gets rid of the "dirty bird" smell much better then water. There are sprays they sell in the store, but I always tell people to go to Walmart and buy the gallon of Aloe for half the price.
-
Well thank you! I love being able to help.

I am ALL KNOWING aren't I?!? LOL  :silly:

Alhough it would be pretty unlikely due to the fact that Psittacosis isn't as prevalent as it once was, there would be the risk of transmission through the toy if there were infected birds or humans in the store. The dander/dust from the infected bird(s) on the toy could harber the virus. I clean the toys I buy when I get them home just because I don't know what was on the grubby hands that touched the toy before me. I buy most of the toys for Elmo where I work, and we sell all different kinds of reptiles...which carry salmonella...and a lot of people don't clean there hands after touching them. I like to use the Clorox Anywhere Sanatizer...spray it on, wait a minute and then ether rinse it off or dry it.
-
Infection is acquired by inhaling dried secretions from infected birds. The incubation period is 5 to 19 days. Although all birds are susceptible, pet birds and poultry are most frequently involved in transmission to humans. Psittacosis is a reportable condition in most states when humans get infected. As long as you don't expose yourself or your bird to shady bird stock (like a nasty pet store or breeder) there really isn't much of a risk...I don't worry about it and I work in a pet store.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/12 17:47

Elmo loves the "total head rubs" and will follow your hand to get them! I can kiss his face and give him little hugs...he lets me do it for a moment but then he lets me know he's had enough. We are still working on being on his back, he's almost there. It seems the more they are cuddled as babies...and I'm talking baby babies...they more they will cuddle as they are older. I'm sure the personality of each grey plays a huge roll in it too.

The people in the cars next to me must have thought I was crazy because I was laughing so hard when he did that!:woohoo: With Suns I would think they were stressed if they were huddled in the corner of the carrier. They seem to like to cling to things.
