No prob, thats what we're all here for. B) I have a bunch of Aloe in a huge pot on my front porch and they look really nice. Plus, I have a black thumb so if I can't kill them no one can!
-
Awwww, that is such a cute story. I bet your going to have a blast with your new buddy...Congrats!
-
I would have a ZOO if I could!!! Would you ever spoil your pet to the point that you wrap their birthday presents?
-
It sounds like your Dennis is a perfect weight. I'm sure your doing great with him, and I wouldn't pay attention to anything that dumbass shop owner said.
-
LOL...man, it sounds like you have a wood chipper disguised as a grey!!! One thing I just though of is getting a peace of plexiglass or other really durable plastic and mount it inside the cage with just a small hole for the bottle neck to stick out. That way he can't get to the bottle to distroy it!

my african couple and the orange winged amazone
BMustee replied to guapo22's topic in Cricket's Amazon Room
Like Acappella said, sunflower seeds are like french fries for birds. They have little to no nutritional value and are not part of a wild parrots diet. It sounds like your picky eaters are the type that would rather starve than eat something different, you really should read through the bird food room and learn everything you can about coverting diets and foods they need to have in their diet. Also, if yu Amazon is loosing weight but only eats nuts and apples I wold think something could be very wrong. Most Amazons that eat a high fat diet, like a mainly nut diet, would become over weight very easily and develop fatty liver disease. Yours is doing the opposite than what would be expected so I would get him to an Avian vet for a full checkup. Also, you said your trying to breed your greys and I was wondering if you have any experiance in hand feeding? I'm asking because parrent raised parrots are not as sweet as a hand raised parrots and therefore worth less and will probably end up being bounced from home to home because they don't bond the same way or handle the same. If you really want to breed and you have never hand fed before you need to find another parrot breeder near you to teach you how to do it because just reading about it isn't enough. When it is not done right...esp on very young babies...the chance of killing them is extremely hihigh. -
I just did a quick Google serch and I found this bottle...looks like it is more secure than the usual cage bottle. http://www.pets-warehouse.com/Vpasp/shopexd.asp?id=111441&zmam=90031077&zmas=12&zmac=62&zmap=111441

How is it connected to the cage now?

I would get an Aloe plant and use the gel that is inside the plant. I don't like the gels you buy in the store because they are not 100% aloe. The are all kinds of additives in them. I would not feel comfortable letting my Elmo eat it so I would not put it on him.
-
It would be getting out of my HUGE car payment when I trade it in in the next week or two, and then I can MOVE OUT of my fathers god forsacken house and never see him or his junky wife ever again!!! Do you have a messed up family?
-
I would imagine health food stores would have it, i think some people order it online too. I'm guessing it helps with consipation because that's what it's next to in my store. Get the 100% (or 99%) pure aloe juice...nothing that has a bunch of additives or is a gel.

Well, Elmo is a year old and is only 384gm, and he is a perfect weight for his size and he never got bigger than 420gm at full baby fat stage. Dennis is at a fledging age and they do really drop a lot of weight when they are learning how to fly. Elmo looked really skinny...his face even looked skinny. The breeder looked at him and said as long as he was still eating the same as he was before there was nothing to worry about. Is Dennis smaller than your last? Also, what did the vet say about his weight? I wouldn't give him any sunflower seeds to fatten him up, but what I did when I wanted him to get his weight back faster was give him extra nuts. The have a high fat count plus other things that are good for them, unlike the sunflower seed. Now that Elmos weight is where I want it he only gets a little of the "boca nut-no shell" mixed in with his pellots. I would say if you want to be on top of his weight you should get a gram scale.

I'm going to have to try that Joe, it takes me forever to spray Elmo and I never seem to get him as wet as I would like. As for the smell magic, I would try after the water bath going over him with a quik Aloe spray. I get the Aloe juice from Walmart in the RX department...it's normally with the consipation stuff. After I spray Elmo with it he smells really nice.
-
From my understanding you need more than one feather for testing. I believe they want like 5 or so from the chest area. Elmo had the nail blood test. I know how to do it but I had the girls at my work do it for me, I don't want Elmo to associtate nail cutting with me. We use Zoogene labs and I think they are based in AZ.

Thats is one cute grey...I really liked the second pic of him!
-
You could also try weaning pellots to get your grey off the seed only diet. The weaning pellots are really sweet smelling and I have yet to see a bird that did like them. Exact makes a good weaning pellot.
-
Very well put Tracy. I'm sure that will help a lot of people out.

I would stick with the one you have. The cage I got for Elmo was a BIG change from the one he was in, and it took him a little while to get used to climbing in it. The cage he was in had 1/2 spacing (it was his baby cage) and the one he is in now has 3/4...my CAG is very small though, he's only 385g. If yours is more on the average weight (around 500g) then 1 inch is more then fine. Give it a chance before you spend money you probably don't need to spend.
-
ummmm, yeah. Not much though. If a person walked in the store with a bird they got from a breeder or other store and wanted a DNA test done we charge $30, if you buy the bird at the store or work there in my case it's only $20.
-
I was going to say the same thing. B) You can also go to your Avain vet for a DNA test. I'm lucky, the pet store I work at offers DNA testing so I had mine done there.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/25 17:34

I know it's a real fight between birds at my work when they start to go after the others feet. If you ever see this going on you need to separate them ASAP!!! Sounds like you have a couple of sweet greys, and years of enjoyment ahead of you.
-
Are your parents going to take Raja in for a vet check at least?
-
Wow, you must have a WPM of 600 or you never sleep! When do you find the time for your greys?!?! :woohoo: :silly: :cheer: Congratulations and I'm sure you'll be hitting another milestone soon...and get more butt-kissing for it! Hahahahaha
-
I've never heard of him. I'll have to google his work.

One trick is to dim the lights...as bright as a single candle is the best. If there is just enough light for you to see him he won't fly off when you go to grab him. Make sure that he is perched in a safe spot before you turn off the lights though.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/03/24 15:30
