Ya know what it seems that it took me almost 6 months to get rid of mine but I finally did it and I'll tell you how...first I freeze all of the birds food, seeds, pellets, ANYTHING I can for 72 hours, then I leace it all in the fridge...it's sad that there's more bird food than people food in my fridge LOL Secondly go to the store and buy WHOLE bay leaves...if you just put them in the bag or box of food or whatever, they won't go near the stuff to lay more eggs! Thirdly lock up all your food tight! These guys get into everything it's disturbing, they got into an unopened box of cereal and chewed through the plastic to get to my honey bunches of oats, the bastards! I bought tons of cheap glad tupperware, on top of the other glass ones I already had. I locked up my cereal, crackers, anything that was left open in the cabinets, same with the birds' treats and such. When they can't feed on anything they start dying off. I'd say in the past 2 months once I went and started doing this I noticed about a 75% decrease in the amount of moths and larvae!!! That and I also hung up fly strips also as another precaution I used to catch dozens onthose things...I've had the strips up for a week and only caught maybe 2-3 moths on each one, so you can definitely tell I've had a huge decrease! Either way good luck!

how do u guys pluck enough corage to let your cag
loviechick replied to jjcool's topic in The GREY Lounge
Yeah Greys can bite hard....I have the hugest bruise on my hand from Red, it's not about guts, its about understanding why they're biting you, once you figure that out, it makes the bite easier to take in my opinion! How old is the bird? Did it come from an abusive home? Did it have a male or efmale owner? Are you a male or female? all this can make a difference I know my girls will bite any man that holds or attempts to touch them, just something to consider! -
Yeah I worry about this, but most of the playdates are at the bird meetings, and my birds don't play with anyone I have snobby birds LOL I will definitely call my vet today and look into it!

Hell I ain't tellin my weight either Judy! LOL No I just say we check in, so I'll go first...today I had a chocolate milk for breakfast as it fills me up and works as breakfast, and then I had Quiznos for lunch, so I'm doing good so far! How's everyone else doing on day one of our group??:woohoo:

Wow those are super cool photos!

I know that even though my Greys are female they are completely different sizes....one of my Greys is 300g, and she hadn't eaten yet, and my other grey is about 360. The vet said they both looked great, but CAG's can be all sorts of sizes, it really depends on how many generations they are from being wild caught. It's my understanding that the longer in captivity, the smaller they get!

I just read Angels & Demons and LOVED it, it had a similar story line to the DaVinci Code, but still fantastic nontheless!

I do the same thing!I always check in on mine!

How funny that its a male and females name, that makes it convenient eh? LOL I named Red her name not because of her tail, but because when I rescued her, her name was Ted. Well I had her sexed and she came back female, and I couldn't in my right mind call a female Ted. I also didn't want her associating the name Ted with her new home as there wouldn't be any of the abuse, and horrible living conditions like there was at the other place, so I changed it to something that sounded easy for her sake. Zsa Zsa-well my mom didn't want me getting any more birds. For some reason even though I've lived on my own for almost 7 years she still thinks she can dictate me LOL She wanted to name Red, Zsa Zsa, but I wanted something that rhymed. So when I got Zsa Zsa, my mom said I won't accept this bird unless I can name it. So her full name is Zsa Zsa Gabird   My mom thinks she's a comical genious...at least I know where I got it from LOL

Hello! A Couple of brief questions from a Newbie
loviechick replied to Cyard's topic in The GREY Lounge
I can't say it enough, the book "For the Love of Greys" is the best book IMO for general Grey care from birth to adult. It is super informative and an easy read I enjoy it very much!!! I couldn't tell you much about the cats as I only have birds, but I'm sure someone else on here could give you some pointers! Why don't you go to the welcome room and introduce yourself, we'd love to get to know you better! Welcome!!!! -
Yeah I've seen finches love on humans too, my friend breeds Gouldians, just gorgeous, but my big birds make enough mess for me LOL My Grey does love to chat, she s a big chatterbox to say the very least! I doubt the finches will keep yours from chatting!

Ok well Talon, what should our weekly check in be? Every Wednesday or something? We could start tomorrow! I'm commited to it if you are, and whoever else wants to jump in!

When I repainted Zsa Zsa's old cage for Midori I used a non toxic spray paint by Rustoleum. From what I understand, as long as it is child AND animal safe, and it will say on the can, then it is ok. I would NOT take the risk if it didn't say child proof AND animal proof. I left it outside to dry for 72 hours, and it was fine! I've had Midori in it since June with no problems!
-
Here's a video of my Grey talking with other birds in the room, proof LOL Just keep in mind that Greys will talk when they want to. Just don't get your hopes up that it will ever talk. I have a friend with a Grey that is much older, and makes tons of sounds but has never uttered a human word!

How incrdibly heart breaking! and so very young!!!

Two birds meeting first time, what does this mean
loviechick replied to Zarlock's topic in The GREY Lounge
Hey my Greys barely tolerate eachother, so it sounds like you're doing a bit better than me! -
Wow, she does sound like a terrific breeder! Ya definitely don't see many of those these days!
-
OK NOW I seriously can't wait till I get out there, man I do enjoy the scenary out there!
-
One suggestion would be to get a water bowl on the opposite side of the cage...most likely they wouldn't walk from one side of the cage to another just to put food in there....One of my Greys does this, and my other Grey is on a bottle. Actually all my birds but my newest Grey are on a bottle so I don't deal with soup very often! Another idea might be to give him/her moist foods like fruits veggies, and other mush mixes and such!

What a neat idea! I actually started weight watchers 2 years ago...sadly and have only lost about 30 lbs...I quit eating fast food, well except taco bell, but I haven't eaten at a Mcdonalds, BK, or anything drive through in almost 3 years! I lost the first 30 in about 4 months, and haven't lost any since, how pathetic! It really worked, it's just a matter of sticking to it...so maybe I will use today as my starting over day and really getting back on track! My target weight is super far away, so it's best I do it 20 lbs at a time! Should we maybe have a day of the week where we check in and see how everyone is doing...maybe say what good we did this week(jogged a mile for the first time etc) and the things we wanna confess(eating that extra cookie after dinner) I find that talking about it and getting tips from others really helped me, but I've long since quit going to the weight watchers meeting as I couldn't afford it! I dunno just a thought!

I live alone, and to be honest when friends come over I let my Greys out and about but they're both pretty scared of new people. They were both rehomes so I don't get bent out of shape to get them socialized as they're stuck in their ways, and really none of my friends want to hold such a large scary bird LOL:laugh: I just let them sit on their tree stand or boing near us in the living room and let them watch interact. In fact Red learned my best friends name (Amanda) and says it when she comes over it's so cute!

How funny Mustee! I wonder if my sun conure would too LOL

1--Each person should tell how much their bird paid for them. Well my Mom bought me(Red) for $400 with cage. I was in a cockatiel sized cage, so she sold it to put the money towards a big cage for me that I love. She paid $600 for Zsa Zsa, and we have matching cages! 2--Whether you were purchased from a private breeder or purchased from a pet shop. Mom's not sure if we were bought from stores or not, we were both rescued from bad houses by her though! 3--Whether you were in a rescue and when you were adopted. We were rescued! 4--The age you were when your bird decided to let you live with him/her. Red was 13, and Zsa was 3 5--Whether you are being fed good food. Mom makes us these yummy mixes with veggies and fruit and stuff. We also get dried fruit for treats, and nutriberries and almonds also! 6--Whether you feel that your owner has spoiled you. My Mom loves me to death, I get all sorts of toys, out of cage time just to hang out and do my thing, and she plays with me too! 7--Whether you feel that your owner has treated you with respect. My mom knows that I am smarter than her and that even though I'm not a person, I should be respected like one! 8--Whether you think that your owner was overcharged. No I think that she was charged a good amount for us, after all we were well worth it!
