1. I have *heard* this rumor also, though I've never experienced it myself....I'm sure everyone on here who knows me, know me as the advocate for rescue, or adopting an older Grey! They very well could be the spawn of Satan....my older Grey was cage bound for 10 years in an 18"X18" cage until she came home with me, she was mean, she hissed, growled, grumbled you name it. Would you believe it 7 months later this same bird will now give me a kiss when I ask for one, and let's me scratch her all over! It can be done trust me! I would always recommend going and meeting the rescued bird first and try often if you can, I visited mine both 4 times, so that when they came home and got a new cage, and new smells, toys etc, at least they had a familiar person so that not EVERYTHING was completely different!
2. One of my CAGs plucks the downy feathers, not many but it still happens. I'm pretty sure it's normal, I also tend to notice she does it more when the weather gets hot outside...could be the temps where you live!
3. Coming from someone that has 2 rescued Greys, it's a total slap in the face to hear someone say they wanted a "perfect" Grey.....as if having a bird with quirks makes them less favorable. There is no such thing, even babies can have issues. Both my Greys have phenomenal personalities, mostly because I think they have seen the very worst, and know that they will never see it again. Sorry if I'm being overly sensitive, I just don't think that was the best wording.

Post edited by: loviechick, at: 2007/11/02 20:26
4. Yeah I agree, don't let them get near the glue, some people will even make toys without glue, pretty neat! All my birds are terrified of PVC, which is a total bummer!
5. Ya know what I think most people think I'm nuts about my birds, I just tell them you will never understand unless you get one!! What a delightful story Peco!!
6. What cute pics and I loooooooooove M2's!!!!!!!!!
7. First off, we need more details. How long have you had him? Has he been vet checked? What are these "nutrients" you're giving him? How big is his cage? Where is he in the home, near a high traffic area, in a separate room away from people? Is he a rehome? Have you had him since he was weaned? Does he have any toys? Are there other birds/animals in the house? Any children? Lots of new people coming into their area? Has the environment changed at all? Has anything about you changed, shampoo, hair color, clothing styles, perfumes etc? These are just some fo the things I can think of off the top of my head, but all of these things depending on the answers can determine possibilities of what's wrong!
8. Maybe look on the Alex website and look at some of the neat things they did with him and maybe that will spark a couple ideas also!
9. Hi all just checking in for the week....I've been bad LOL I've decided that I'm not weighing myself this week as I know I will be bummed LOL Hows evreyone else doing?
10. Gosh ya'll are hilarious, I've never even been to this room and then I saw this post and was like Woah! I like your styles LOL
11. Mine will all be going to bed early as I'm going to a party!
12. I second that Judy, for the love of Greys was FANTASTIC I just loved it....I've heard about the CAG parrot handbook, but a close friend of mine met Mattie Sue, and said she was drunk as a skunk at the parrot convention, I won't support anything she does!
13. I dont' get scared by many things, I've lived alone for so long it's just best that I tune things out. I worked at a hospital for 4 years graveyard shift, in what used to be the first morgue ever built in this town in the basement of the hospital...I saw and heard LOTS of weird stuff, although I've never actually seen a spirit or anything like that, but I'm open minded and believe anything is possible really!
14. I've seen this before and it is sad....but this is exactly why I will tell anyone to go and get a rehomed bird, of not a rescue!! None of my birds are babies, and while it's fun to be able to go and "pick your new baby out" I think it's sad that there is another one out there looking for a home that is being abused, neglected, poorly fed etc. I just think that it's easier and more convenient for some to just go straight to a breeder rather than "hunting" for a bird...On the other hand I also know that sometimes people live in rural areas, or it's harder to find rescues in the area, but I know that isn't the case for all....IMO there is nothing more gratifying than watching a bird that is petrified of everything come out of it's shell because it's trusting you, not because it has no choice, but because it wants to so I completely understand where you're coming from BMustee!

new video

Very cute, he sure is learning how to use that voice of his isn't he?
16. Red doesn't like to be cuddled at all, then again she wasn't used to affection prior to my home...Zsa likes it a little bit but only at night on her terms...I've got my Sun Conure that's my little cuddle bug LOL
17. I agree with you Zeta and that cage is almost identical to the one I have except mine is a couple inches shorter, and about 10 inches wider! Good choice!
18. Like mentioned before, changes in family situations can do this...I know when I left for 3 days shortly after getting Red, when I got home she wouldn't let me touch her for a couple days she was pissed....a trip to the vet isn't a bad idea either just in case, but more than likely repetitive temporary absenses is what is causing the mutilation
19. The actual "thing" in chocolate that is bad for birds is the chemical called "Theobromine". Birds can't break this down and so it becomes toxic in their systems. However I too have heard that birds have been fed chocolate chip cookies, candy bars, etc for years and have been fine, now whether this has any long the effects who knows, but I've heard of it before!
20. Hey Andrew...wanna trade birds?? I've got 2 to choose from LOL
21. I know that someone mentioned spraying and bathing, so I figured I would start a new thread. Does anyone have any Greys that think they're being murdered when being bathed? They usually fly off their perches if I spray them in the cage, and they both flip out...I'm not sure if they were punished with spray bottles or not being that they both came from abusive homes. Should I try sticking them in the tub and spraying them? What would be the best way to get them used to it, any pointers?
22. Well I live in an apartment by myself with my 4 birds, I have a Sun Conure, a Senegal and my 2 Greys. My Sun is by far the loudest, and to be honest I'm still not sure why I haven't been evicted. Most of my neighbors are pretty cool and I've neevr had any complaints. Actually most of them say they like hearing the noises that the Greys will make. I wouldn't get a cockatoo for an apartment at all, and I do think they're a bit needier from the ones I've met, but I still love them, just not for an apartment. I personally don't think a Grey is bad for an apartment, hell I have 2 of them LOL but then again if you get a screamer you might be in for it...I know the worst I get from my Greys is a microwave beeping...my neighbors probly think I eat all the time:laugh:
23. My birds are very vocal at dawn and dusk, but it's mainly good nights, and good mornings LOL I don't get much screaming unless it's out of my Sun Conure LOL I would take her to the vet though just to be safe!
24. Ya know, my furniture was treated, and my birds play on it all the time, but then again it was treated like 5 years ago...loooong before rhe birds came so I wonder if it's worn off, gee I didn't even think of that I'm a bad mama! I would think Microfiber suede would be fine, my couch is made out of what feels and looks like courdoroy and I just love it!
25. That's awesome! Hopefully she will keep it up!
