Lidia, I like the embarrassing one, how cute is that, and it is a trick in my book since you taught him to do it, that qualifies. I'm hoping to get some really good tricks posted here for ideas for others to try to get their greys to learn. I, myself, am not good at teaching my grey any tricks, so I need some help in that department.

Makena, how interesting, and we really do have a diverse group of members, in all walks of life with an assortment of professions. Yes I may be curious about some of the things I fix to know what the analysis would be, especially from the birds nutritional needs. Thanks for the offer, you may be inundated with so many requests you may not be able to comply with all of them.

Oh Lidia, I absolutely love your post and you put it so eloquently, I love the people here, it is what makes this place so appealing to come to and the information we get almost takes second place. We are all individuals, living in different places throughout the world and we experience some of what each other's lives are like by contributing what we know about our own. But if Frank has anything to do with it, some of us will get to meet each other in the flesh and that would be so wonderful if he can make it happen. He WILL make it happen, he does not take no for an answer, and he is the best thing that has happened to this forum and I am forever grateful for that.

Hello, Readz, and welcome to the family, glad you joined and we look forward to hearing more about your new grey. At 15 weeks he is still very much a baby and so he needs a little more attention like Lidia said in her previous post. He needs the reassurance that you are still around, when he calls answer him. As he matures he will be more independent and play on his own. You don't really want to spend so much time with him now that you cannot keep up in the future or he will come to expect it. My Josey is 14 months old, technically still a baby, but not like yours, she is more independent now and plays to herself, but she has times she wants to be with me and part of the goings on around her. I hope Lidia and I have helped you in some way, and some of the others will add to this thread to give you some ideas how to avoid a spoiled rotten grey. If you have a picture of your grey we would love to see it. Also what is the name of your grey?

I am another one that feeds her grey some meat, especially chicken. She has also eaten deer and bear meat, and likes that also. I don't give her a lot of it but she usually gets it off my plate. I haven't tried tofu, I don't eat it myself so I am not going to give it to her, I don't even bring it into the house. I am going to try giving her some yogurt, and see how she likes that, but cheese is her favorite and my hubby runs to get it first so he can feed it to her to gain some attention from her, otherwise she avoids him.

Thanks Dan for the update, I can see from the photo why you have both of them, and if you do decide to keep both, I wish you all the luck in the world, because if anyone can do it is you and Kim. You have two separate personalities here in these 2 birds and you will have to adjust your interaction accordingly but it looks like you are having fun with both of them and that is what truly matters, so you go for it, I back you 100%, not that you need my acceptance but you have it anyway, free of charge.

I have been feeding the bitesize shredded wheat biscuits, no sugar or salt added, to both my birds and they love them, I would think the honey ones would have too much sugar for them.
-
I think that qualifies as a trick, Mark, at least in my book, and mine is the one that counts here in this thread, since I started it and I make the rules:whistle: so yes it does.:cheer: I am hoping for some really unique and good ones, I know some of the members here have worked with their greys more than others and I hope they will share what they did in hopes of inspiring others to try something new.

Post edited by: judygram, at: 2007/08/06 14:09

Right, mine is ok with the water changed once a day, but a few of the members say they have to change more often, the exception not the rule.
-
I like the second cage, it is almost identical to mine except for the divider, mine does not have that. I like the play area that is not up so high. If you are worried that the big cage will freak out your new baby you could get a small travel cage, it probably would be a good idea to have one anyway. I use one a lot, to take her with me to work and such. She also uses it if I have to go away for a couple of days and I have to board her with someone. My Josey took to her big cage ok, but I guess it depends on the individual bird, some it might be a little scary. Extra bowls would come in handy to have a clean set to put in while you take a set out to wash. Just refill once daily unless they mess in it or some say their bird demands fresh water more often than once a day, but your bird will let you know if that is the case.
-
If it is fully weaned and perching well, it should be ok but you may have to leave the perches lower than usual and maybe pad the bottom of the cage with towels or something to cushion the fall if he does fall off a perch. Some of the members us a sleeping cage or you can use a travel cage, I don't.

RobertsKitty wrote: You sound like one smart woman, and if we had more people like you we would not have so many parrots in need of new homes. It is a pity that so many people will get that parrot and have no idea what they are in for, but you do, and if you can make a difference then I am all for it, you go girl.

As the subject in another thread, TalonSis has taught Talon to spell her name, now that is an amazing trick to do and I know there are others out there with similar tricks they have taught their greys to do or say. I want to hear what you have taught your grey to do or say that makes it worthy of being a trick. If you post a five or six sentence paragraph telling us about it, I will give each one 1 karma. If you post a picture of that trick in addition to the paragraph, I will give each one 2 karmas. If you post a video, in addition to the paragraph, I will award each one 3 karmas. So get those photos and videos in to this thread to get karmas and if you haven't already taught your grey any tricks, then get busy and do so now, I won't wait forever you know.

Hello, Rambo, and as I told you in the IM, birds are used to sleeping on their feet, and greys especially will lift one foot and rest it for a while and then the other foot. They don't usually use a tent and actually lay down in it, but a few do and enjoy it. Each grey is an individual and as such will do its own thing and most will sleep on their feet.

Hello, Kathleen, and welcome to the family, I think you will like it here and we look forward to hearing more about your birds, especially Bailey. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask us, we will try to answer as best as we can. If you have a photo of Bailey, please post it for all of us to admire and enjoy. Also if you will give us a little more information on your grey and the other 4 birds you have, what kind, ages, names and such, just for background information so we can get to know you better.

Mirek should not be going thru a molt for a while yet, I believe around 8 months is the first one, and it may not be a complete molt, where all the feathers are replaced but just some and then some more later. BTW, nice avatar, Geoff, I like it.

It does make a body feel good to have someone happy to see you in the mornings and evenings after you get home from work. And Dan has certainly taken that a step further to times two. But I guess this way he and Kim have one each so maybe it works out best for both of both of them.

RobertsKitty wrote: Oh you're good, real good, Kitty, you are doing what all prospective grey owners should do, what a fine example you make, thanks so much for what you are doing, to find out everything you need to know before you get that bird. But even with all that, I am sure you will be back after you get your grey because you will find out something you didn't know you had to know or have some question that didn't come up before. It always does. You go girl.

Anytime, Joe, all you have to do is ask.
-
I'm sure you are seeing her "true colors", this is how she is and she should be fine to take to the classroom occasionally under the conditions specified above.

It would be better if it was a little bigger, but I can tell how good he looks, even in the small picture, his beauty shines thru. Thanks for sharing that with us.

You are so right, Sasha, I did misread your post, you meant they came from a single bird home, each of them, not all five from the same household. Thats how these posts can be misinterpreted according to how you read the words written. Then this makes it even more amazing that they do get along when they were used to being an only bird. You have done a wonderful job then if they do get along and I commend you for what you have accomplished. Maybe you can tell us how you have made it work for you and your birds, it might benefit some of the members here with multiple bird households. Thanks for clarifying that for me, put a "kick me" sign on my back.
-
Thats so sad, Dan, you will never have another kitty, but then I probably won't either. I have two now but one is 17 years old and won't be around much longer, and I am not replacing her even though I have always had at least 1 cat all my life. She never bothered the birds but then a kitten probably would and I am not going to risk it.
-
Dan, what am I gonna do with you, maybe you should post a sign on your front door, enter at your own risk, bad mannered guests will be chewed by greys.
-
Sasha, that is a lot of greys from the same home, what happened that you have them now? You have your hands full with 5 greys and you also have other birds as well, you are busy. MrSpock gave us some good information on having more than 1 grey, keeping the first bird as No 1 bird as it will always be first in everything, first out of cage, first fed, and so forth. He says it sets the pecking order in the flock and they get along better this way.
