    At the zoo

Aww that is a beautiful bird, a white peacock, what a show it put on for you and thanks for sharing it with us Tari. B)
  2. If you are really brave you can try taking Sammy into the shower and see if she will allow you to get her wet that way, some of the member's greys love to shower with their owners. My Josey does not care for baths but I take her into the shower and use the spray nozzle on her, I have one of those hand held ones, she tolerates it but does not like it. You can also put her into the tub and use a spray bottle filled with cool water and spray her down until she is wet, it will take a bit because the feathers on the back are practically waterproof, hard to get wet. Some will try to bathe in their water bowls and some will even use a larger bowl placed on the bottom of the cage, some will put a toy or two in to entice them to play in it. Whatever method you use try to make it as fun as possible and talk softly to her and tell her it's ok, but she just might surprise you and like it.
  3. Madi, don't panic at the loss of one feather, a few feathers lost is normal and something you will see from time to time. And what Kitt said about it might just have been that feather's time to go could be right on the money. Now if you start seeing other feathers and the ends are chewed then you might have a problem. But you can expect some adjustments since you just brought Sammy home, it will take time for her to adjust to her new home, new owners so be very patient with her and in time she will settle in. Glad to hear she is doing fine to start with do keep us posted as to how it goes with her as you and her are learning together. Probably a lot of your concerns can be answered by scanning thru the threads here for information, we have covered a lot of territory on greys here in our many topics.
  4. It was a tough decision Dan but you made the right one, Jake has to come before a new one but I know it was not an easy one to make, you really wanted that Jenday, I could tell:( , so maybe next year then. There is another baby out there for you when you decide to get one and it will be so lucky to have you and Kim for parronts.
  5. OMG poor Talon and poor Penny as I know she hates to be toweled but it is for her own good so you do what you have to but be careful with those fingers of yours. I hope the results are not bad news but I know you will keep us up to date on whatever news it brings:huh:
  6. That is a cute B&G macaw there Tiffani, now just how many more birds are we talking about and what kind are they:whistle: :cheer:
  7. Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there today, may your children appreciate what you have done for them so when they grow up and become moms themselves they can be so blessed:kiss:
  8. Homersmom wrote: That right there answers your question, yes they do a super job mimicing sounds they hear and Homer has taken a liking to the squeaky dog toy. If it is annoying you then find something else for the dog to play with and he will soon find another sound to mimic. You have nothing to worry about, Homer is fine and he is just doing what he does best, they will surprise you with what they can mimic and you will be hard pressed to tell if it is the real thing or Homer, enjoy!!!
  9. She is convinced!!!!!!!
  10. Carol this is wonderful news, Bobby is finally home after his long ordeal and he is on the road to recovery, he is such a precious little man who has a mommy who loves him dearly, he is truly blessed. Give him a little kiss for me:kiss:
  11. Happy Hatchday Merlin!!!:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: Any photos would be great Sandra, you know we love grey pics!!
  12. I know the feeling Carol and my Josey will do her poops in her cage but she is fond of standing on the door when it is open and dropping her poops so I have to put down some newspapers on the floor at that place.
  13. Oh boy I am so excited to find that you are going for that grey, I don't think you will be disappointed at all, he sounds like a wonderful bird but get him before someone else finds him there or he will be gone. Good luck Madi:P
  14. """""I prefer to "savor" the distinct taste and texture of each. It not only provides good nutrition this way, but also makes eating an enjoyable daily task that must be done for good health and happiness.""""" So true Dan but this is what has gotten some of us in the shape we are in, me included but you make a valid point.
  15. Just because she hasn't talked much does not mean she is not a good talker, most greys have to feel comfortable where they are to be very vocal. Some won't talk around other people and a few won't even talk in the presence of their owners in the same room. This grey has been taken from her home and put in a pet store and she is going thru some changes and it will take some time for her to adjust, the same thing again if you do take her home with you to yet another situation she will have to adjust to. So that being said it will take lots of time and patience when working with her so don't try to rush anything, it will only work against you and set you back even further. Her missing tail feathers could be the result of a too small cage but be prepared for it to be the worse case scenario but you can deal with that later. She does need a thorough vet check to make sure she is healthy and the vet can advise on the tail feathers also. You can expect to pay as much as $1200 for a grey but it can vary somewhat from that and it depends on where you are located also. I doubt if it would come with a guarantee since it came from another owner and not from stock the store usually sells from but it never hurts to ask. Be sure to let us know what you decide to do and we will help you in any way we can.
  16. Well to tell the truth I do believe Harrisons is the better brand for Josey, she eats it readily and it has no colorings added, that is important to me but it is an individual choice but most all of the brands are nutritious but maybe not equally so. I think Dave made a good point and it is well taken.B) :cheer:
  17. Yep, you got that right Tracy and some of those dollar store buys make excellent bird toys.
  18. Thats funny and wierd at the same time Tracy, your greys eat the palm nut but won't touch the palm oil, Josey is the opposite.
  19. Hello Madisimmons and welcome to the family, so glad you have decided to join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and this new grey you plan to get. If you have never owned a parrot much less a grey then you need to do as much reading as you possible can. We have a couple of threads with some wonderful books on greys that would make for some good reading material. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful and helpful information and do ask questions you may have and we will do our best to get you some answers and help you in any way we can. When you do bring this grey home or whenever you can if you would share some pictures with us we would love to see her.
  20. So in a nutshell it doesn't really matter what brand you feed your bird as they are all pretty much the same in quality just each has their own distinct flavor and one particular brand may be preferred by each individual bird, thanks Dave:blink: :cheer:
  21. Yeah it may take a while to get it thru their head but they eventually do get the message but we suffer until they do. Josey never tried climbing up on my head but a couple of times and I nipped that right in the bud.
  22. Right on, they could care less about what they cost so why spend big bucks on something they will destroy in no time at all. They probably like the multi colors of that particular toy with the duck in the middle and it won't be so easily destroyed either.
  23. I never have a problem with Josey shouting back at the TV, she hardly pays it any attention at all, she is relatively quiet except for her vocal periods. She has no one to chat with when we are not at home as the sun conure does not talk, she only screams:laugh:
  24. A lot of us feed our greys some red palm oil every day, I use about 1/4 teaspoon in some oatmeal or some baby food fed with a spoon. And the regular bathing helps also with a finish of aloe vera juice.
  25. Congrats Amanda on bringing home your two beautiful babies and I know you are as pleased as punch. Have you decided on names for them yet and please do share some pics ASAP as we are anxious to see them.
