If she has a difficult time with him , it could be the same with any bird .Also suggest she wait 6 months and care for the Grey totally , then if she still wants one after doing research , go for it .""" Mary this is excellent advice and she should research thoroughly before she gets her bird but it should be her decision as to what she gets.
  2. Hello JMJimbot and welcome to the family, so glad you have decided to join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Dow. Congrats on finally realizing your dream of owning an african grey, they are amazing creatures as I am sure you already know and I hope this is the beginning of a lifetime of happiness for you and Dow. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. I assume that is Dow in your avatar, if you have any other pics you would like to share with us please do so.
  3. Hello Labrat and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your new grey. A lot of younger greys will dig at the paper and my grey, Josey still does it from time to time and she is a little over 2 years old now, I don't worry about it, I think it is more of an attention getter. If you haven't named her yet then what are you calling her? I wouldn't worry about her being able to repeat her name, you would be surprised what they can manage to say. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. If you have some pictures of her you would like to share with us we would love to see her.
  4. Your link does not work, maybe you need to edit it some.
  5. I am so proud of you Sandra for taking in this conure that definitely needs some tender loving care and who better than you. Her former owner probably didn't know any better for I am sure if he had he wouldn't have built her a cage with zinc. I agree she needs to be seen by an avian vet but it looks like damage has already been done but maybe you got her in time to save her. That is so endearing to hear that Merlin is taking the new addition to the flock so well, he thinks he is daddy and has to keep his eye on her and keep her safe from harm. Better get another bell soon, you know how greys love their bells. I'm hoping you will share a pic of her with us as soon as you can, we would love to see her.
  6. Well I got big news for you, a lot of people cannot control their children so how are they gonna control a bird, (expressing my opinion which I freely give) And you are right JC, a lot of people act before they think it out. Again, expressing my opinion which may not reflect the opinions of other members of this forum.
  7. BlueCounty wrote: Well thats what we are here for:lol: I would put newspaper down on the bottom of the cage but put down some towels or a blanket underneath the paper to cushion a possible fall off a perch. The newspapers will catch any poops and you can change it often as needed. Gizmo arrives tonight, I know you are so excited, please share some pics when you can.
  8. I didn't have the answer but glad to hear you do Jim, thanks for sharing it with us, I figured it had to do with a region of Africa but you narrowed it down for us.
  9. Thanks Suzanne for clearing that up for us, I didn't know that either, but like always I learn something new here every day.
  10. I don't think that would happen Darth but the thought made me laugh so thanks for that:laugh:

    Water

I give well water also as I live in the country and we don't have city water that is clorinated and it is whatever temp the cold water is in the ground. I have given Josey ice cubes to play with also, she loves them.
  12. Hello Darkmocha and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and this rehomed grey you are getting. With your experience you should have no trouble in helping this grey with the transition to a new home and a larger cage. I'm so glad you have it in your heart to take in one of these greys, rehomed birds can be very rewarding to someone who is willing to spend the extra time and effort to win over their heart and you sound like that kind of person. You will find lots of information in our many theads so read thru them at your leisure and do ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. When you do take possession of this grey and take some pictures of it if you would share some with us we would love to see him/her. I think Lyric has the best suggestion of mixing your own seed, that way you can avoid any contact with peanuts, maybe even email some of the major manufacturers to see if they offer any without peanuts.
  13. Wow you do have quite a list but a lot of good names too, will be hard to pick one but I am sure you will pick the right one.
  14. Oh my what a thing to have to do but somebody has to and you are elected since its your bird, Darth, you can tell us about it but no pics please:sick:
  15. I love these pics of grey friendship:)
  16. Debbie you can entice Greyson to come out of his cage with some toys or a treat. Get down on the floor and play with a few foot toys and let him see how much fun you are having and he will soon want to come out and see for himself. As he comes out and interacts with you it will show him that he can enjoy himself and being with you. Right now he feels that the cage is his safe place and that is fine but he will soon find out that time out of the cage can be fun and rewarding for him.
  17. Well from here it does look like there is a grey in the cage and we would never have known any different but if it helped you then its not silly, soon it will be for real.
  18. I don't see a problem Erika in you getting this eclectus if that is what you want. I don't think Baxter will be mad at you just remember that Baxter has to come first so he knows his place as first bird. A lot of us have multiple birds and many different kinds of birds so if you have the time then go for it. If you handle it right there should be no problems and if there is you can always ask us for help.
  19. If the cage is like most of them it shouldn't take too long to put it together, most are fairly simple, just have a couple of screwdrivers ready. I have put cages together by myself so it has to be simple and easy if I can do it.
  20. Welcome back Char and thanks for the update on Whisper. She sounds like she is doing just great and talking too, my Josey didn't start talking until she was 1 year old. Glad to hear she enjoys a shower, wish mine did but at least she will tolerate it and she seems to have bonded with the both of you, lucky for both you and your husband. She is a good looking grey and of course you take very good pictures, thanks for sharing it with us and don't stay away for so long, we love hearing from you and Whisper.
  21. That is a nice cage just waiting for the new arrival. These two months will be the longest of your life but well worth it.
  22. That does sound like a good thing for the right person but not me, I would have to move too far away from my family and lifting 40-50 pound sacks is not for this 58 year old woman anymore. B)
  23. Yikes, I just bet you did but I have Josey step up a lot when she is out so she doesn't know when I am putting her back in her cage. But then she has never been a problem getting back into the cage for bedtime, sometimes she is already in there because she is ready for bed and other times I may be sitting on the couch with her getting some cuddles and neck scritches and I just put her in the cage.
  24. Oh boy you did make a big mistake didn't you and I am not sure how you will have to handle it to get Talon to go into her cage. I'm sure that you have tried to put your fingers over her feet as soon as you get her to step up on your hand. I am a little stumped on this one, maybe some of the more experienced grey members will have some better ideas for you Penny.
  25. Just when do you expect to bring your baby home? I know the wait can seem like forever but the day will come.
