Kristin, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room so we may get to know you a little better. -
What do you do with your bird on vacation?
judygram replied to kridanpiper's topic in The GREY Lounge
Kristin, when you first bring your grey home you should not leave it for any length of time so it can come to trust and bond with you. Maybe an overnight stay might be ok but certainly not for a week or more, after you have had your grey for at least a year then you can go on extended vacations. Depending on where you go you could consider taking your grey with you as most travel very well, just purchase a travel cage that has bowls for food and water and a perch or two. Greys are very cautious birds and they come to trust us and it can be very upsetting in the first year if you are away for a week or two. Now if you are talking about going to work a lot of us work away from home, my Josey is by herself during the week days but she comes out when I get home. When I go on vacation as I did in December I have someone who keeps my two birds, she has other birds of her own so they have plenty of company. Some members here do have someone come in to their home and take care of their birds when they go on vacation and if they can spend a little time with them every day then that is an ideal situation also. -
Hello Helen and welcome to the family, so glad you found us and we look forward to hearing more about you and this new grey you are getting. Long winded, never you haven't seen long winded yet:lol: I am so sorry to hear of your loss and the house can be too quiet when you are used to having the sounds of a bird in the house, makes a difference. I am so glad you did the research first to decide if a grey is right for you and your family, wish everyone did then it wouldn't be so many in rescue and rehome situations. Yes we do have a lot of helpful information in our many threads so continue to read thru them and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. As soon as you pick one out and see it please take some pictures and share them with us, we just love to look at the babies, they are so adorable when so young.

What is YOUR cags favorite shreddable?
judygram replied to littlehawk's topic in Homemade Toys & Playstands
Josey's favorite is those empty toilet and paper towel rolls, she likes to shred them up in little pieces. -
I am so glad to hear the grey's owner has been found and he is back home but it is so sad for you as you came to love this grey but maybe you can get one of your own now. You have been so wonderful to give this bird a home and did all you could to find his owner, you do good work and are truly blessed. I hope this doesn't mean you won't come back here to our forum for you are welcome to stay, no grey required.

Did you read about the Grey who escaped...
judygram replied to DarkGreenGoblin's topic in The GREY Lounge
Yes I have heard it before and it was posted here on the forum but it is such an endearing story that it bears repeating, it is amazing how that helped get him back to his rightful owner, Mr. Nakamura was truly blessed, thanks for sharing it with us. -
Here is the link that tells all about it and there will be all kinds of things there you can buy for your birds. http://www.birdclubsva.org/index-3.html

Yes I see but you should put Darwin where you will be spending most of your time and if that is your bedroom then so be it. Maybe you can move Sprite to the living room for quarantine period and then when that is over you can move him back to your bedroom. Darwin is probably going to pick up the scream anyways as my Josey picked up my conure's scream, it is inevitable so be prepared for it.

Bring em on, we welcome any questions.

Wow that is some nice playstand and you got it in Williamsburg, wonder if he is coming to the BCV Convention next month?
-
Thats wonderful to hear Dave as we all probably have some couches that need to be cleaned, I know Sunny, my sun conure loves to get on the back of my couch and let go of them and I am not in the habit of covering the back of the couch but maybe I should. Thanks Dave for your priceless information when we need it, you are invaluable to us.

Thats a nice looking playstand Rana and you are very creative, thanks for sharing it with us.

Holy Smokes!!! Been there, done that. You handled it nicely and I can see nothing but progress from now on as he is trusting you from what you are telling us. Thanks for sharing this little story with us, may not seem like much to some but it is big news.

I haven't had a chance to read it all but I will, thanks David for posting the link for us.

Hello Melinda and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Reena. So sorry to hear you are having difficulties now that you have a new baby in the house but she is probably jealous and it will take some time for her to figure out that if she still gets enough attention from you then the squawking will subside. Like some others suggested you might have to put the baby down in another room for naps and then you could focus more on Reena to bring her into what is going on and she will be quieter. You will find lots of helpful and useful information in our many threads and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. When you get a chance would you share a few pictures of Reena with us as we would love to see her.

Dave is right on about the potty training, I have never tried to train Josey but she does tend to go in a certain place in her cage and when I let her out she will come to the end of the door and let one fly so she avoids going in the cage unless she is shut up inside.

I don't know whether they are the same kind but I have seen pictures here on this site of greys holding much bigger palm nuts in their talons and these are small by comparison, wonder if anyone knows if they are the same thing.
-
Glad you finally figured it out Jacqueline, mine goes together differently, it does not have any screws, the four sides fit together at the ends.

Thanks so much for updating us on Sooty, wow poor thing, no wonder he was so hungry, but I hope he is on the road to recovery. Oh yes vet visits, especially avian vets are expensive but they can be lifesavers so the money is well spent, good you have Sooty insured. Please keep us updated on Sooty's progress for we care about you and him.

Congrats on Fred doing some noises now, they do very good imitations don't they, probably will talk soon, thanks for letting us know he is doing fine.

My hubby could make one of these if he wasn't so busy with making stuff for everyone else, why am I always last:( Keywe if you could tell us what materials you used in this playhouse I might be able to get my hubby to make one for Josey, I think she would enjoy it a lot.

Just look at that little baby just starting to get the flight feathers, so adorable and I know you can't wait until you can bring it home, soon Caitlin, real soon.

Welcome back Max and glad to hear that Gizmo is doing fine and is bonding with you nicely and he seems quite a character from the video, thanks for sharing that with us and now that you are back please check in with us more often to update us on how Gizmo is doing.

Joey is bonding with you by the way you describe and has chosen you for his mate but yes he is still cautious yet, he has been thru a lot and it takes time but you are getting there. You are doing such a wonderful job with him, I am amazed at your progress. Respect his desire to be left alone at times, he does not want or need your constant attention and he has times that he wants to be left alone just like we have times that we don't want to be bothered with. You said you have never had a parrot before but you are a quick learner, you should have had one a long time ago, you seem to have a knack for it. Keep us informed of any further progress with Joey.
