I think you can get the kit for testing from www.avianbiotech.com and it cost around $25 so that is not expensive but it is if you have your avian vet do it.

It does appear to me as if some chest feathers are missing from the looks in the first photo, I would keep an eye on it, have you noticed a lot of feathers on the bottom of his cage?

We have different rooms here, you will see them when you click on forums, choose the room that best fits the question. Thats too bad about your first grey, maybe it just wasn't meant to be but you have another one now, a smart one at that but I think they are all smart, too smart sometimes.

Congrats on getting Max since you have been waiting a long time for a grey but you were just waiting for Max, it was just meant to be this way. He does sound like a real sweet bird and he has settled in very quickly to be a 4 year old bird, you must be doing something right. He has chosen you as his favorite but then you are not disappointed at all, that means more time with you and that is your gain and his loss. Its the consistency of water, just put it in a spray bottle, you can get that at Walmart too and use it on your grey.

Their natural habitat is more humid than we would be likely to enjoy especially during the summer but if you could back off on the dehumidifier some and get some aloe vera juice, you can get it at any Walmart in the pharmacy department in a gal jug, use it full strength after her baths, it will help to moisturize her skin and make her feel better with less itching. Now that you are here why don't you stay.

No Charlene you haven't missed a post as she didn't make a thread about it but she had to pull another broken blood feather a couple of weeks ago with the help of Pat and now last night she had to pull yet another Phoebe broke off, she is getting good practice.

Someone is missing a grey, have you contacted area vets and pet stores to see if there is a poster about one missing, I can imagine the owner is frantic with worry looking for this bird. I hope the owner is found but in the meantime I assume you are taking good care of the bird.

Sometimes our house can get very warm in the wintertime if we are using the fireplace and especially if we fire up ole bessy, the woodstove which we will be using more this winter to cut utility bills, sometimes I have to open a window or door to cool off.

Apollo is a very nice looking dog, very sleek and healthy, he does look to be full of himself and I bet he is a great addition to your family, thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

It could go on a while, is it loud growling or sort of more like a grumbling? My Josey still does a little grumbling sometimes to show her displeasure at me for something I am doing to her or trying to get her to do, she does this instead of biting me as most greys do when they don't want to do something you ask. Some greys are more nervous than others and it just takes longer, tell her to just take her time and be patient.

Cassandra, that is a beautiful little bird you have added to your flock, you are an angel for taking in this little one for if you hadn't I shiver to think what would have happened to it, we both know don't we. I watched the video last night and was impressed with your loss Carol, I am glad to hear you are off your medications and you feel better for you look wonderful, congrats on your achievement.

The advice is still pretty much the same, she needs to be patient and give her bird some more time to settle in, the growling means she is too close for comfort and when she feels more comfortable she can do more with the bird, some just take longer than others.

Bonnie I am so sorry for your loss, what a precious little baby to suffer an awful accident like that, no words can comfort you but at least you have the videos to remember Akima by, so sad.

Sounds like a perfect fit, you are lucky to be working from home so your grey will have plenty of out of cage time and interaction with you.

Congrats on deciding to join the rank of grey owner, you are in for a treat of a lifetime. Its not cheap to keep an african grey, they need a big cage, toys, playstand, travel cage, good food, vet visits and a certain amount of your time. Cage will be a one time thing but the other things will be ongoing and could vary from time to time. Most of us usually take our grey to see an avian vet for an annual checkup but if something happens to your bird or it gets sick then that is additional money. Most of us feed our greys some of what we eat, vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, legumes and a little chicken or other meat occasionally. The main expense foodwise is the pellets you should provide at all times for snacking. One book comes to mind if I only mention one is "For the Love of Greys" by Bobbi Brinker, it has a lot of good information that covers all areas about the grey.
