  1. I second Birdnut's comments on what characteristics you are looking for in a parrot for that is what you should be looking for, one that fits what you like and not just what you see that is cute for the moment. You should do plenty of research and ask yourself what you would like as far as personality and size before you commit to getting one then having to rehome it.

    Toast

You can order red palm oil from www.swansonsvitamins.com as they have the best prices, not sure about the extract but the red palm oil is from the nuts they eat in their natural habitat.

    Toast

Thats excellent too if they will eat it.
  4. I doubt she wants to breed now, she is just going thru the motions for she is a sexually mature grey and so she has the urges even if she doesn't have the willing to go thru the final act. Do not put any type of box or container in her cage that she might think will make a nest out of.
  5. Was this an open porch you were on with the birds? If so please do not have those birds outside without being in some kind of enclosure for they could have flown away even if they are clipped and not to mention dinner for a hawk.

    Toast

Maybe a fourth of a slice daily, if not daily then you could go with a half slice.
  7. No there is not an across the board way of telling what the letter and/or numbers on the band mean, it can vary from breeder to breeder but I would say your bird is a captive bird especially if the band isa closed one. When you moved the sheeting and mattresses and brought them right past Cocoa you committed one of the worst sins you could have with a grey, they are very conscious of their surroundings and you do not do that for it scares the bejesus out of them and they freak out. Even furniture that is in the room they are in if you move it to a different place then it scares them, you should give her warning that you are coming thru with something and move very slowly or take her out and put her in another section of the house so she doesn't spook for they will squawk and flail all over their cage and maybe hurt themselves. Remember greys spook easily.

    Toast

Well you toast some whole wheat bread, put peanut butter on half for Ollie and lots of butter on your half and go for it.
  9. What a cute little bugger Jackson is and a good sport, I loved that pic of the measuring cup on his head on facebook, Tanya should be very proud.
  10. Hello Sara and welcome to our family, so glad to hear you have given Norma a forever home and you have certainly come to the right place looking for advice and thanks for including a couple of pics of Norma in your intro post.
  11. Josey is a little over 4 years old now, not sexually mature but certainly aware and she has been showing signs of the wing drooping, panting and such this year for the first time so I know when to leave her alone for there is nothing worse than being sexually frustrated, well maybe not the worst but close, you get the idea. :p
  12. My grey does that too Amanda, she will grab my hand with her foot and then the noises will start, I just walk away for you don't want to encourage that any or it will frustrate them and then the biting will occur when you don't deliver. You are doing the right thing by walking away and ignoring it, it is fine to pet their head but leave the wings, back and anywhere near the tail area alone for now. Just say thank you but no thanks!
  13. Ollie is getting more independent and is trying to tell you he doesn't want to be bothered at that particular moment and you have to respect that, sometimes we ourselves don't want to be bothered but we can convey with words, they use their beak, just don't take offense to it when he does that, just try later and he may be more receptive. They can have their good days and bad days just like we do and they are not like cats and dogs that pretty much welcome hands on attention at any time, when he bites just say no bite and turn and walk away for a bit then maybe later he will be more receptive.
  14. You need to leave that travel cage around where he is to get him used to being near it and put him in it and take him out somewhere where he can get some sunshine and make it a fun experience for him, do this several times to condition him that when he gets in the travel cage it doesn't mean a trip to the vet. I have taken my grey out in hers often and she has only used it a couple of times for vet visits so she has had many more happy times in it and she doesn't hesitate to get in it.
  15. Biscotti must have had some good cantaloupe, I love hearing them chat to themselves, thanks for sharing that with us.
  16. One good deposit deserves another, what a great story of how you came to have Corky and I bet you have many others from the 10 years you have had him, maybe you can share a few more with us as you find the time, we love greyt stories, thanks for sharing that one with us.
  17. I got mine online, I googled vet wrap and came up with several places that sell it and in many colors, it is typically used for horses.
  18. Thats so sweet Dee and yes you have found the secret to getting that harness on him, good luck with that.
  19. Some people should not have been allowed to breed in my opinion, I would have told her to mind her own business but you handled it nicely Sanggay.

    Perches

Not if it is painted for you don't know what kind of paint it could be, might be toxic, if you have access to tools you could make him one out of untreated wood. You can buy wood dowels at your local hardware store.
  21. You can't go wrong with her advice.
  22. Well if this was a breeder who told you this then he is totally wrong, he was just interested in the sale and said what he knew would seal the deal. It doesn't matter how long it takes for Solomon to feel comfortable enough to trust you, it just matters that you continue to talk to him and be there consistently for he will come to trust and love you when he is ready, it can't be rushed and if you really love him then you will spend the time it takes to build the bond with him.
  23. Greyt picture but monster, I think not, thanks for sharing it with us.
  24. Don't I know it for I have one but suns are the prettiest and brightest of the conures which was what drew me to them but she doesn't scream all the time and it doesn't bother me in the least, its part of owning a parrot. I agree that two gc conures will not be any more trouble than one so go for it.
  25. Welcome Medicmark, so glad to hear you "rescued" these two greys and I too would suggest you get two separate cages for as they get older they will want to each have a cage they can call their own, they can still be together when outside the cages and it will help them bond to you instead of clinging to each other. Give them some time to settle in and feel comfortable with you and be sure to check out the bird food room for lots of ideas on what to feed and what to avoid.
