HELP Needed - Is this Grey for ME? My family?
judygram replied to MyGrey-Gary's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Please rescue this grey if you think you can handle dealing with the baggage that comes with a rehomed grey for this poor bird should not be subjected to such mistreatment, if I had been there in your place I might have slapped the owner myself for no animal should be treated that way. The bird is not mean, it is just trying to get his point across that he doesn't like being treated that way and yes it means you would have your work cut out for you but many times when a grey comes from such a home they turn out to be a really sweet bird and yes all birds will bite from time to time but this one is trying to tell his owner he doesn't like it but the owner seems to have an attitude that the bird will do what he says or else. If you are willing to take the time to give this bird what it needs and be very patient with it then by all means do it, taking on this one instead of getting a baby grey will be a harder road to travel but one well worth it if you decide to go this path. Consider it long and hard before committing to it but if you really want a grey then go for it. -
And this behavior should never be encouraged, when your bird does this just say "thank you, I love you too" then walk away for a bit for it will only frustrate them further if allowed to continue.

Josey enjoys some juice now and then especially orange juice, I never allow my fids to have any kind of sodas because of the carbonation, they cannot burp like we can to get rid of the gas and maybe a sip or two of milk now and then but not very often because they are lactose intolerant, just like with our human kids we never allow them to have everything they want or see.
-
Ali I think you got something different going on with Ozzie, those wings held low means he is sexually aroused so don't do anything to encourage that, just say "thanks but no thanks" and walk away for a bit.
-
Yes but you are allowed to be, so glad that Sadie is getting along with your dog, obviously Maggie is not aggressive towards Sadie and that makes a difference, she is really starting to blossom under your tender care, imagine how well she will be with you later on, thanks for the great update on Sadie.

I have many of those books already as I bought them to read when I first considered getting a grey, I hope other prospective grey owners will learn all they can before they commit to getting one of these amazing creatures for they deserve only the very best from us, maybe some of those books will end up on some Christmas lists, thanks for sharing the link.

Be sure to tell him what you are doing as you do it, he will understand more than what you think he does and be sure to let us know how it went when its all over and done with.

my bird is having an affair with my neighbour
judygram replied to twizzle's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
No it doesn't seem fair but it is the way it is with some greys, you just have to work harder and be extra nice to him to get a measly little amount of affection but don't take it personally for you are in the early stages yet, give it lots of time and be patient and see what happens. -
Well I am disappointed you haven't brought Betsy home but I understand your reasoning though I think it would all work out in the end but you know yourself best and if it is meant to be then it will be Janet.

According to Dave, normal major molting usually occurs once or twice a year depending upon how dry the skin is so Paco may be going thru another molt plus they molt their flight and tail feathers at separate times so they are capable of flight.
-
Well I guess you have your work cut out for you so when Cosmo says "Jump" you better say "How high"
-
I think those pink toes are cute, too bad they want so much for it.
-
Quivering of the chest feathers is normal and they all do it from time to time and it is in response to their heart rate and respiration.
-
It could just be a phase he is going thru right now and things could change at any time so don't kick Jason away for now, he seems fixated on him for the moment but life is fleeting and fickle sometimes so go with the flow and see what develops. I agree with Janet, there is no need for name calling, after all this is a family forum.

I would say depth is more important as they need enough width to be able to open their wings and flap without touching the sides but the ones that Dave, aka Spinner showed are an excellent cage size. And thats good that so ask all the questions you like.

Timmy talks!!! I HEARD IT!!!!! HE TALKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
judygram replied to hammco's topic in The GREY Lounge
He was saving the best for you it seems, I would advise you not to react to the swear words for if you give any kind of reaction he may think it is a reward and keep doing it, if you ignore it then he might say those words less and less as time goes by but he will never forget them. Just tell him good job and praise what you like to hear and ignore the rest. -
New bird doesn't like females, help/advice please
judygram replied to LoveMySpouse's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hello LovemySpouse and welcome to our family, so glad you could join us. There is not much you can do if a bird prefers males over females as that is the way with some greys and this one is certainly mature enough to know what he wants and be set in his ways. You probably find he reacts with you better when your spouse is not in the room for if they see their favored person then they become their only focus with the attention. I would advise you to continue to offer him treats and talk to him softly as you are doing just don't force anything with him and your spouse will have to be the one to get him into his cage for now, just take a back seat and see if some time will mellow him out a bit. It might be in your grey's best interests to not have your grandparents see him very much as it may confuse him since he spent the first 28 years of his life with them and now he resides in your home, seeing them he may think he is going to be going home with them and he has to come to think of you two as his new parronts, he needs to build that trust to bond with both of you. I know it is heartbreaking to be the one to do most of the work for a bird and someone else gets all the love and affection but that is the way of some greys and there is not much you can do to change it, just adapt the best you can and accept what is given. -
Since you have only had Brody for a short time and he is 9 years old it will take some time to get him to trust you but it sounds like things are going well so just take it easy and it will all fall into place. Think in terms of small steps and with a grey that is 9 then he is set in his ways and patience is what will be your best friend right now. Continue with the singing since he seems to enjoy it so much and yes any advice from your aunt is welcome since she knew him best, she knows his quirks, likes and dislikes. I bet in the coming months we will hear lots more good things from you and Brody, thanks for the update.

I think the move will go fine since you seem to have it all covered, Ollie should settle into the new digs with no problem and a couple of treats will definitely help.

Question about my annual vet visit and preening gland problems
judygram replied to Buffy's topic in Health Room
I agree with both Daves and would question the vet for more conclusive answers. -
I think we can safely say that maybe a guitar was in Marcus's past since he had a strong reaction to it or maybe he just didn't much care for the sound of it, who knows what goes on in a grey mind but it would be interesting to see if he has another similar reaction if you try it again, wouldn't it be great if we could understand grey speak.

my bird is having an affair with my neighbour
judygram replied to twizzle's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Don't think I didn't notice the out law for I did but I won't ask if you don't tell! It could be if both of them wear glasses, you will have to bring in another unsuspecting person wearing glasses to find out. -
I'm still waiting for the pictures of Betsy, LOL

Well time will tell whether it is an allergy or you have come down with a cold, flu or similar respiratory problem but you may have to be tested for bird dander specifically so a visit to your doctor may be in order to find out but there are all kinds of air purifiers on the market if it is indeed an allergy, good luck to you.
