  1. Congrats to you both and what a wonderful way to pop the question, he sounds like a keeper.
  2. I agree with Penny that you should at least consult your avian vet about that talon coming off, you don't want any kind of infection to get started and that had to have been very painful for her.
  3. Congrats on your second addition of a Tag and so glad to hear from you again for you have been missing for a long time. Penny has given you some excellent advice and be prepared for them to never really get along as that is just the way they are but they can learn to co exist without too much problem. Just keep up what you are doing and post a couple of pics of Alexis for us to see.
  4. I think you are doing just fine, remember it takes time and lots of patience when working with greys especially when he comes from a neglected home and a month is not nearly enough time, it could take many months, not to discourage you but just letting you know it may take a long time but it will be well worth it when he warms up to you.
  5. Hello Ashley and welcome to our family, so glad you could join us and you have a lovely couple of fids, thanks for sharing the pics with us. Thats a pretty little green cheek conure, I have a sun conure and I wouldn't dare let mine get that close to my grey or trouble would ensue, glad your two at least tolerate each other.
  6. I have had other concerns as to my absense from the forum lately but I do agree that we all are busy with the holiday preparations, it never stops until it is all over with, so many places to go and things to do what with the shopping, decorating, wrapping and baking but it is a most wonderful time of the year and I hope everyone gets to spend it with their loved ones, family and friends, thats what it is all about.
  7. Hello JimmyD and welcome to our family, so glad to hear you want to take in a rescue or rehomed grey, many of these birds have gone on to become some of the best companions and you are doing the right thing to learn all you can before the day comes when one is available. Yes bites do hurt but you can minimize how many you get by learning to read your bird's body language especially so with greys.
  8. Happy Hatchday Corky, you are one precious grey and handsome too.
  9. What fun Issac has with a simple blue plastic cup, we spend all kinds of money on bird toys and then find out that something in our cupboards can keep them entertained, loved watching him fly with the cup, thanks Stephen for sharing that with us, love that Issac.
  10. Now all we need is a short video of that so we all can crack up, amazons sure are entertaining birds.
  11. That Nilah is a character and certainly makes making preparations for a big dinner an entertaining spectacle, what would you do without her.
  12. Jill is right, you have to earn his trust again, many greys view their cage as their safe zone, their territory and do not like any human intrusion, besides you just pushed him too far so back off and be more patient with him as he begins to feel more comfortable.
  13. About the bathing please read thru several threads in the Health room for ideas and ways to introduce bathing as some greys love the water and some not but the bathing is necessary. Yes it is normal to just rip up the nuts but he may find out soon that there is something to eat there too, you will find he will love ripping up stuff. Greys go thru several periods of vocalizations during the day, they will be rather quiet in between them but when they get chatty they will go thru their vocabulary of mimiced sounds and just being vocal, pretty soon there will be words and sentences. He may be just trying to get your attention with the high pitched one or you may have just left the room, if so then call back to him to let him know you are still around even though he cannot see you but don't come running when he does it or you will find he will do it more and more, ignore the bad and reward the good. He will yawn some during the day as they all do it from time to time, if you think it is an excessive amount you can always give your avian vet a call, he should see a vet at some point to get a checkup to make sure all is fine. Do not worry about asking too many questions and no question is stupid, you want the best for Jerry as do the rest of us so ask away and do read thru as many of the threads here as you will find the answers to some of your questions there.
  14. Hello Marsia and welcome to our family. Do you own an african grey, if so please tell us about it and some about yourself so we can get to know you better?
  15. Thanks so much Dan for sharing this with us, we as grey owners know how amazing our birds are and it was sad news for all of us when Alex died.
  16. That does look more like body painting than a tattoo but I have two tattoos that I got late in life and have never regretted getting them but agree they are not for everyone. If that is a tattoo imagine what that will look like in ten, twenty years or more, I shudder to think!
  17. I like that Tiki hut aviary also, my husband is not up to doing it right now but I am going to work on him to get me one built next year sometime.
  18. Barbara I am so glad you welcomed another grey into your life after what happened to Neo, you seem to have a lot of love for these guys and when one door closes another opened and Egan is in your life for a long long time so keep the updates coming.
  19. Congrats Matt on taking in this grey and giving it a new forever home, as it is a very young bird the adjustment period should not be as long as with an older bird so not much baggage. It will take some time for him to adjust to all new surroundings, new family and such so give him time and be patient with him as he settles into his new home, let him make the decision when he is ready for more interaction from you and your family. Open his cage and allow him to come out on his own before you try to get him to step up onto your hand as some greys can be territorial about their cage. About the shaking, if he is shaking all over that means he is scared but if the shaking is only in the chest area that means he is feeling emotion or contented so be sure to observe which it is. His growls mean he is afraid of you yet or you are too close to him, back off some for the time being and let him get more comfortable then try again later. If there is a lot of people around he might need a corner of his cage covered somewhat so he has somewhere to go to when he wants left alone or some privacy but lots of people around will help to keep him company and occupied. It is not unusual for him to be left alone for hours at a time as most of us work full time and our fids are alone while we work, I leave a radio on but I have 3 birds so they are somewhat company for each other even though they are in separate cages, after all someone has to bring home the bacon. I think your grey will be just fine if you let him set the pace for closer interaction, when he is ready he will let you know but the important thing is not to rush him for more than he is willing to give right now, you want to earn his trust and you do have to earn it as it is not freely given. Pictures would be more than welcome and what is his name?
  20. We always knew Cocoa was model material but the photographer knows just how to bring out her best qualities, excellent.
  21. How sweet, they both look like they really love one another, unusual for a small kid to be so loved on like that.
  22. There has to be some kind of lock he couldn't tear up or break but in my opinion he should not be outside the cage at night for he will end up getting into something that will either harm him or kill him, for his own safety he needs to be in his cage for sleep. Birds should not be sleeping with their human owners, you could roll over on him during in the night and cause him great harm even suffocating him to death.
  23. I am so very sorry about your loss of Cody II, even though you had him only a short time he came to mean so much to you and will be sorely missed.
  24. What adorable little sun conure babies, just wait until they get their full coloring, they will be so bright you will have to wear sunglasses to view them, I have one sun but two will be twice the fun, thanks for sharing them with us.
  25. I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Betsy, I am just now reading about it as I have been absent from the forum but she was loved dearly and I know she knew that, its so sad her life was cut so short but you did everything you could to save her, please accept my condolenses on your loss.
