Hello Featherbird and welcome to our family, so you want an african grey to add to your flock, great choice. Many members here have more than just their grey, I also have a sun conure and a cockatiel, they each have their own cage but are placed beside each other, they do not get along but are company for each other when no one is home. If your grey is gonna talk it will no matter what other birds or pets you have, mind you a few greys choose not to ever talk but the odds are in your favor. My grey does mimic my conure's screams and the chirp that my tiel makes but that is par for the course. Do your research to find out if a grey is a good fit for you for they are not exactly like other parrots, they have nutritional needs and require more attention than a lot of the birds do, they need to be kept busy or occupied for a bored bird tends to want to pluck and no one wants that. It really doesn't matter about the gender, some think that males prefer female owners and vice versa but it is more of an individual bird preference for I have a female and mine is bonded to me, the bird will pick a favorite if he/she chooses and many will be equally fond of all members of the household so a lot depends on socialization.

I find it is best to not have them on me if they are eating messy foods as my shirt is great for wiping dirty beaks.

Oliver, blue and gold macaw Stewarts new brother
judygram replied to murfchck's topic in Other Birds
I am so sorry to hear of this news and it makes me so angry this breeder is just going on about business as usual, mind you I like your idea of how you would handle her but its still too good a way to go. I am sure if there is anything that can be done to save Oliver you will find it for he deserves a better life than what he has had before he came to you and I am keeping you all in my thoughts, please keep the updates coming. -
Congrats on your baby being weaned and ready to come to his new home but just relax and take it easy for you don't want to be a bundle of nerves when it happens. Don't fret too much about the teflon thing, keep your bird out of the kitchen especially when you use any nonstick cookware but if you are careful with it and not overheat it when using it then it should be fine. I occasionally use a nonstick pan for eggs, you just can't do eggs in anything other than nonstick, but my fids are not in the kitchen and I am careful not to heat the pan too high. Teflon is present in some appliances but most are things we only use for minutes a day and keeping the fids out of that room when using them is safe enough. They should get a balanced diet, my vet recommends about 75% of their diet be pellets but most won't eat that much a day but be sure to browse thru the bird food room and the nursery room for ideas of what to offer.

You must have some kind of gut feeling about this Janet and that will be your answer but if you do contact this woman do not reveal any details but grill her on when, where and everything that you could possibly think of to find the clue that Louie is not her bird besides hasn't it been well over a year or more since you got him, where has she been since then, sounds like things do not add up that Louie is this womans but do what your heart tells you to.

I think you are already gone and I see a zon in your future, your near future.

Ellie is a lovely Tag and nothing is safe from those beaks so keep a sharp eye out when she is chewing those suction cups, she looks like a busy girl, thanks for sharing the pics with us.

Some people do but they are not without their faults, some birds will stuff a nut or some other piece of food in them and then the water leaks out and some will learn they can apply a little pressure to the ball and it will drip water, you know how smart greys are. All three of my birds dunk food and such in their water bowls which looks like they were trying to make some kind of soup but I just dump them out and refill with fresh water.

Anything I can do Josey can do just as good or better, they can make those sounds so real but they cannot burp, you must never allow them to consume carbonated drinks.

Oh I am sure he is though his tail was hidden in all these shots, it should be just a red button head about now.

Noodle has obviously picked Cody as his favorite person and many greys will do that which means you take a back seat but not all is lost. You continue to be the one to feed and give him treats but when a grey picks a favorite there is not much you can do to change it, they have a mind of their own and the fact that his previous owner was a female and mistreated him doesn't help either. Pay attention to his body language and if he is showing back off then do so, never force yourself on him or try to make him do what he doesn't want to do for he is telling you in his way, by biting, he doesn't like it. Ignore the bad behavior and reward the good, if he bites tell him No then turn your back on him, they don't like to be ignored but never use physical punishment as it will only backfire on you, you will lose trust with him. One thing though is the biting will never stop completely, a bird bites, that is their way of telling you they don't like something, you can cut down the frequency and severity of the bites but as long as you have a wild animal and a bird is a wild animal there is always going to be the potential for an occasional bite.

He is adorable and yes they grow quickly, changing a lot from one week to the next, he is getting his feathers, his eyes are black, his beak is black and I just want to pick him up and squeeze his little pea pickin heart, baby greys are so special, thanks for sharing the pics with us.

This is a first for me Val, I haven't heard about using chamomile tea this way but maybe someone who has or knows more about it will chime in but from what you have told us it has made somewhat a difference since you used it on Kura today, I hope it helps for I know ekkies have beautiful feathers but then what bird doesn't but theirs are a softer more delicate feather, keep us updated Val.

Hello Sophie and welcome to our family, so glad you gave Billy a new forever home. It takes time to build a relationship with an adult grey so just be patient with her and give her plenty of time to settle into her new home and become familiar with her surroundings, she will let you know when she is ready for more interaction so don't push her to give more than she is willing for a grey's trust has to be earned. It could be that the change in homes has caused her to start plucking but be sure to keep her busy with lots of toys especially foraging toys when she is in her cage so keep her busy and occupied, she will be less likely to pluck from boredom but maybe as she settles in it will happen less and less. A vet visit may be in order if it has been more than a year since she has been seen if ever to rule out anything physical as a reason for the plucking. We would love to see some pictures of Billy if you have some you would share with us.

This must be an amazing place Mark and I am so glad you got to go and kudos to Malikah for encouraging you, it looks like a great place to get bird supplies at a reduced cost though it can be heartbreaking to see so many birds in need of new homes. I know many have been relinquished since the economy soured and if it would be under different circumstances you would have been bringing home another fid I can imagine. Too bad Wisconsin is too far for me to be able to go visit but I have been to Phoenix Landing in North Carolina, an adoption and rescue organization and they do good work also. Thanks for sharing what you found with us and yes I expected more pictures but you were so busy taking in everything you forgot about recording it in pics, we will forgive you this time but if you go back please indulge us just a bit.

Hello Christine and welcome to our family, so glad you could join us. How old is Noodle? I just bet Noodle loves noodles as most greys love any kind of pasta, noodle or rice but this is the first bird I have heard that was named Noodle but I like it. If you have questions please feel free to ask away and we will do our best to give you an answer, more than likely one or more of us have been there and done that and it helps to get firsthand knowledge from other grey owners. Please share some pictures of Noodle if you have any as we would love to see him.

I think at 11 years of age and being with you for 4 years he has come around about as much as he is going to, a lot of greys are more independent and do not care for much touching or affection, they will sit by you and be with you but not necessarily be right against you and since he is regurging for you he is bonded, just accept him as he is.
-
Some greys just do not show much affection for their owners, they are content to sit and observe from a distance not spending a lot of time sitting on your arm or nearby you, he does allow you to scratch his head but most greys do not like to be touched a lot and some areas of the body is off limits. I don't think you are doing anything wrong, I just think you may be expecting more from your bird than he will be comfortable with. He obviously loves you as he is regurgitating for you.

She is very pretty, I just love their dark eyes and they do change so fast when this young, thanks for sharing the pics with us.
