Okay, thanks, she never returns my emails or calls.....I do need to know, has the bird been checked for a micro chip? That's important, as I have someone who's bird is banded and micro chipped waiting to hear if this bird has a chip. It's easy to check for that, no fee involved. Forgive me, but Suzie doesn't seem very easy to work with on this.
Hello Steve, perhaps you could start a new topic about yourself in this room so we can hear more about you and your birds and what you meanly "expedition".
Steve,
Perhaps you should post a NEW topic in the Other Birds room with more detailed info before we can offer any advice. We are not vets, so contacting one would be your best bet
Not everyone writes down their band info......there ARE other ways of the owner identifying thei bird. Sounds, words they speak, songs they may sing. Just seeing the owner with the bird would be another way to determine if the birds knows the personor not.
Luvparrots, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Does she have what's called an avian chip? Not sure what that is, but I know of another bird that has that.
I know of very few maybe one or two that have had any success with this. I would never risk my bird's safety in this manner. Too many things could go wrong. no matter what anyone tells you, or how well bonded you are with your bird...you cna NEVER TRUST that they will come to you when called, or stay with you when their natural instinct to flee when they get startled.
Oh, sorry, When I said free-flighted, I meant ONLY in my home. My birds fly wherever they want INSIDE my home. I WOULD NEVER EVER try such a thing outside. I have read too many stories of a bird getting spooked and lost....
Most of you know that I have passionately been searching for a found cag's home. Many thoughts have come to mind as I see how hard it can be to identify your bird to another person as confirmation is required and it should be.
1. It is so important to have your band info on file at home if your bird still wears it's band.
2. Micro chipping is the best in my opinion.
3. Never giving up!
4. Thinking your bird that has been missing for any length of time will not be traumatized and will welcome you is not always going to be the case.
5. Thinking that your bird will answer by name when another has found them isn't always the case either. After all it's NOT your voice that is saying their name. As we all know, greys are cautious and nervous around new faces.
Please feel free to add to my thoughts. I had my bands removed for. Safety reason in their cages when I am not home.
I am now wondering if perhaps I should micro chip my birds. They are all free flighted and outnmost of the day when I am at home. Is it safe? Are their any long term effects as it is a foreign object in their body. I know the chances they are caught are slim, but if their is the slightest chance they are found, I have a Hugh chance of finding out and proving it is my bird.
I would love to hear from others on this subject I am considering......
I found a lady in NY who may be this birds owner. The band letters match. She is so distraught over losing her bird. I hope and pray this is her bird.......of course it is the weekend and we are unable to locate the person caring for it . I will keep you guys posted.
Well, I have to chirp in here as well. 2 of my 3 birds were banded. I had them removed by my vet as I have read many horror stories about them getting caught on something and some chewing their foot of when it gets caught, etc. My vet highly recommended it as well when I asked him his opinion. BUT, something to think about.........there has been a Congo AG found near where I live. It is banded and the person caring for it WON'T let it go unless the owner can identify it thru it's band. What would happen IF this bird had no band? Makes me wonder if god forbid one of my flighted birds got out and was lucky enough to be rescued, WOULD I ever get them back?????
What type of material are you using? it needs to be rust proof, and safe when your birds put their beak on it as they climb. You dont want a toxic metal, it will have serious health concerns if your not careful with the type of mesh you use. Birds like o climb their cages, so as Dave says, make the spacing close together for safety reasons. You dont want toeir head to get stuck....
Nilah has an incredible singing voice! She can sing her scales very nicely. I do notice however, that she sounds like me, well, by my ears anyways, although I have Never sang for anyone and don't really know how I sound, other than my own ears.
Talk constantly to your bird as others have said. They are more apt to pick up words that have a big inflection i them...such as "PEEK A BOO! The more excitement and drama you show, the better! It is still early I guess, although, my grey started talking at 2 1/2 months, she had a few words she would say. BUt I talked to her constantly as though she was my child...
Thanks for the kind words Mandy, but I have only spoken to Suzie 1 time, and she seemed a bit like she wasn't too interested in what I had to say. I dont care tho, I just want the bird to be reunited with its owners.
I am glad you are able to talk to her and keep up on this bird. I will continue my efforts, but it isn't looking too good...
