This was my morning to catch up to your posts. I feel like a slouch with only driving 4,000 miles and learning to cook on a new outdoor device while caring for dogs, birds, MIL with Alzheimer's and visiting "back home". Your activity level is upwards of "a flurry". Congrats on the new baby Kane. The picture of Pat looking into the nursery is just endearing. The two of you make a great pair... I won't say pair of what... LOL. Just kidding, you are the best of the big birds in the flock.

On Saturday morning hubby found a display case on Craigslist. Like the ones you find in stores that have the mirrors on the sides and back, glass front and top. ( we are kicking ourselves for not getting a before picture. This is about 2 hours into the transformation into Kane's new play area!

We took it all apart, removed the drawers and relocated them, made a sturdy base and flipped the unit over where the top is now the front and the back is now the top. lol

It is so large for him right now I had to get Pat to build me a separator so we are only using the front part where I can reach. He is at 562 as of yesterday morning and is starting to move around and even spread his wings and flap some. It broke my heart when he did it the first time, knowing he will never be able to fly.

Having birds adds to our creativity and gives us a new fashion of eclectic decor. Don't feel so badly for Kane at least his injury is from early in his life. One of the Greys that arrived last week lost the end inch of her left wing to a "bad wing trim". I wish I knew whoever did that and when it happened, still has some scabbing but that may be from failing about when she was falling. Karma

That is just heartbreaking. People just make me sick and I wish that person could be found and we could do a "trim" on them that equals what they did to that little grey! Aarrgggghhhh!

Bongo and Chulo went to the dr yesterday. Chulo got another beak trim and this time they took it all the way back down and it is almost normal looking (if you look really quick)

Before

After

We were looking at their weights also and Bongo is at 482 grams, umm Kane weighed in at 592. Hard to wrap my head around that one. A baby weighs more that a full grown grey. Chulo was 880g.

So here is yesterdays picture.

During the day, his tail feathers took a growth spurt and I helped him clean them up last night. :-)

Took the day off work today. Mama bird needed to regenerate a bit. Here is Kane this morning, weighing at 678g.

What a magical time watching him grow from a darling, helpless little chick. Your photos are eagerly awaited and the numbers just keep climbing with his weight gain. He is going to be a very special companion. Thanks for all the countless hours you have put into your flock and for sharing with us.

So today i took the extra time i had to bring Kane out to play with me. Of course he doesn't walk well yet but after a few minutes, he was chasing my hand around. More in fear at first but that quickly changed and we played and groomed and then he went to sleep in my hand. I of course am blaming this on exhaustion, but tears just started flowing. I got him back in his pen and went straight to the Pet Supermarket where i had to buy everyone a "just because" shredder! And Kane got a mini tennis shoe and some rattles and... Eh, bills smills. My babies deserve them! And i just told the hubs he is taking me out for dinner! What a wonderful day!

All signs are pointing to Kane readying himself to start weaning. :-( He has started being stubborn with the formula, chewing all kinds of stuff and he took a growth spurt in height and lost a touch of weight.4grams (I think, won't be sure until next weigh in tomorrow. I had a bouncing weight yesterday so I took the one that came up the most, lol. Wrong I know but he wouldn't hold still to get a good reading) He really isn't old enough to wean but if that is what he wants, I guess he will get it, but very very slowly. He is just one day shy of being 7 weeks old. Yesterday he was my baby and today when I was feeding him, I looked at him in the tub that I got for him and thought how when I got it I just knew it would be a while before he was in it. He reached up and grabbed a hold of the top of it. :-(

So now we are back up to the 679g. Not sure what's going on so going to reach out to my friend and make sure all is okay with him. I try to stay away from googling it, that always puts the fear of God in a person. lol

I had him on the table feeding him this morning and he reached up with his little beak and tried pulling himself up on my shoulder. He seems healthy, I I am sure I am just over reacting and all will be good.
