  1. Don't discount a re-homed. In my experience they usually turn out to be the best birds. I love my Grey that I got as a baby but the conure and the especially the Jardines were special birds. The Jardines touched me like no other bird has simply because she came from such a bad situation and really blossomed in our home. Your friends Grey sounds almost like the perfect situation: take the Grey in your home and if he doesn't hit it off with you maybe he can go back? 5 years old is still young. No way I'd pass that up.
  2. I have heard of others losing a young bird out of the blue. My Amazon did nearly the same thing, fell over face first in his food bowl and out like a light, but he was around 15. It was also 20+ years ago when I got him and no one knew what the heck we were doing especially in the feeding department. It's very tough losing a bird and then dealing with the guilty feelings of wanting another. You're not disrepecting the memory of your passed-on little friend. They make such a mark on you that really it would be highly unusual for you not to want to fill that void again, although you can never replace them. There are several around here that have gone through some heart wrenching losses including myself. Recently Muse just lost one of her birds out of a beautiful pair. She has taken in another that would most likely end up who-knows-where but is better off for it now. We lost a sick little Jardines that I was highly attached to and I never thought I would get over it. As for food - I wouldn't change much of what you were doing, especially until we hear back from the vet report. I see nothing wrong with what you were feeding. Supposedly Harrison's is the best of the best, it's what we feed outside of fresh veggies/fruits and sprouts. The ingredients list is very different than most.
  3. Wow, sounds like a page right out of healthy feeding for Greys. Would really like to hear the results of the vet report. Sounds like you did nothing wrong. My only qualm is, I won't feed any pellet that starts with 'ground corn'. I think RoudyBush does. So many manufacturers use ground corn to fill out the product for sales esp. in dog foods and I notice parrot foods too. I highly doubt that had anything to do with it though being he was so young. I'm leaning toward a congenital condition of some sort.
  4. Our Roma tomatoes in the stores here are coated in an oily substance. I never figured out what that was. Btw...I printed this article out almost two years ago and it still sits on my desk, mostly unread. What a procrastinator.
  5. That's terrible. Losing a bird is losing a member of the family. Hope to hear back what you find out and if you can deduce what may have led to the cause. From the sounds of it though, may be congenital. May I ask what your feeding program was?
  6. Looks like a normal Grey with that beak trim. Hopefully the vet will work that quick back and get that toenail down to size.
  7. Sorry to hear. Yes, best to use a trusted breeder and stay away from the backyard breeders. One of the petshops around here is nothing but a backyard breeder and thankfully they closed down a few weeks ago.
  8. Now you know your 'Peck'ing order!
  9. Green cheeks are another one of my favorites. I've had two of them. The last one made off with my daughter and her parrotlet. I just love their little personalities. Happy hatchday to the the little guys.
  10. Well, you do earn 173 Rakuten Super Points on that purchase!
  11. We get some wicked storms here in North Texas. I'll have to keep my eyes on Greycie to see if she behaves differently while the storms are still a few hours out.
  12. Some beautiful photos. Also nice to see they return the birds back into the wild. Love how they are in tune with nature. A 13-year-old eagle huntress in Mongolia
  13. Well, I can't believe you'd take a picture of such a pretty girl with food all over her face and post it for the world to see, or rather, she can't believe you'd do it from the look on her face. Haahaa.
  14. Notice the quotes around the comment. It's a caption, not a question.
  15. "Are you seriously going to post this online?"
  16. Quinoa is unusual in that it will sprout while it soaks. Which probably means I'm soaking too long. I usually soak 8hrs and *maybe* 8 hours rinsed, and I do it separately. Besides feeding the babies with it, I eat it in yogurt. It's good stuff.
  17. It's the Greys coming out in us. Otherwise we're all rotten to the core, bad apples I say You missed the last divisive member that was a high up when I got here. Since banned. Shame as he had some real good info to pass along but the way he went about it was pretty abrasive. I'm on a bunch of FB groups and for the most part they are ok too. One of them has a mod-god complex in it's hierarchy but easy enough to ignore. I come here to look at everyone's Greys - can't get enough of these beautiful creatures.
  18. Greycie hopped right in. - 1 farm raised egg from the hens out back - sprouts (mid bird from Sprout people) - sprouted Quinoa - Red palm oil Scrumptious!
  19. Peck will show that vet who's the boss bird. And in the meantime, he'll get a nice beak trim and a nice parrot pedi, maybe even an almond if that vet is worth his red palm oil.
  20. For the record, I just stole this idea.
  21. You don't know how right you are. When Greycie was let out by my SIL, she flew to her hearts content - straight to the horizon. Finally two days later she was perched in a tree where we normally rode her Townie rides just waiting for me to come by 3 miles away.
  22. We have three crows that live near our property and are constantly on the ground hunting/foraging. About a week ago I had a dream that I was returning from a Townie ride and hopped off to check the mail. One of those crows flew over and knocked my conure off the bars, grabbed it off the ground and flew up into a tree. I ran after it and it was holding the conure just out of reach taunting me with it. The conure was looking at me with his little eye and I could tell he knew he was going to die. At that point in the dream I dashed back to the bike and realized the other crow had gotten my Caique. What a friggin nightmare that was. It was so off-putting that my wife and I decided their may be meaning behind it. I never leave my birds, nor have them unharnessed outdoors so not sure why I'd have a dream like that.
  23. Loves apple. Tosses broccoli to the floor immediately. Setting you up for the patented Grey sucker punch one of these days. Sounds completely healthy and normal to me
