  1. Stewart got his name from the Saturday Night Live skit they did, " nooooooo" with his foot pushing people away and how he would jump and clap saying "look what i can do". Oliver got his name because when we first got him he had just one row of green feathers on his head and when you looked at him from the front he looked like a stuffed olive.
  2. Oliver wandered onto Stewarts cage again last night and it was the first time i have ever seen him angry and wanting to fight. Oliver was by his paper roll with one foot on the paper ripping it in chunks. Stewart was climbing the ladder, neck stretched out and beak open waiting for his chance to bite. Well now i know just how much his paper means to him! Lol
  3. I wouldn't be able to go there. You are so strong.
  4. Woo-hoo, found a great dog run on CL today for $50.00. In as much as we are only using it for the frame, i couldn't pass it up! Thursday we are getting welded wire (? I think thats what he called it anyway) and taking it from 6' to 7'. He actually assembled it with the chain link for me to get ideas, so to the hardware store i went. Got rolls of bamboo to put on the top as shade and stared at grapevine plants for the inside in pots but really want to research what plants are safe for them! I am so excited for the boys! This will give them even more freedom bc we won't be having to stand there holding them looking around! Come on Thursday! ( Now watch it rain. :-( lol )
  5. I am so glad youall are safe! We just went thru the storms here in Texas with several tornados a few weeks ago. I was at home alone with all the pets scared outta my mind. I had put dog food, cat food, fish food, bird food all their treats, jugs of water, leashes, cages, toys, even toilet paper into the safe room and sat and cried asking myself how i would get everyone in there! ( forgot my dogs insulin, that won't happen again! ) My wonderful neighbor called to check on me then came over to help. We set out a plan, the cat we put in the room right off, first sign she grabs Stewart and i get oliver into the room, then she would get 2 dogs, i would get 2 then us! I never gave thought to the emergency information, i will be doing that tomorrow! Again, glad everyone made it thru okay, and thanks for the great advice!
  6. Thanks. I do try and not compare but i really want to make sure i am doing and giving him all he needs. You just never now what you don't know until you ask! Thats what i enjoy most about this site!
  7. I just don't want him bored. I was told he was cage bound before i got him and i want him to be free to do whatever he wants, he just needs to want something! He had a very bad beak trim so he doesn't chew any wood. Doesn't (can't) even crack nuts. I gave him bells but he only likes them if i ring it. I put cereal in a bottle bc he likes the rattle noises but again, i have to make the noises. He is not independent at all. Lol he hates foot toys. Adding paper he adores to nibble on, no shredding just tiny nibbles. I thought about a babble ball but really he is so timid that would scare him and set us back i'm afraid.
  8. I know this will sound silly but i have not found a way to "play" with Stewart. He doesn't like toys so really he just sits. Now i may not have found the toy he likes yet, i have only had him since January, 5 yr old rescue, but even when he is out to roam around he just sits or runs back to his stand. Yesterday his first attempt at play may have happened by taking my straw and lid off of my drink and tossing it. What are some things to do with him? We whistle and talk all day to each other but when his is on my arm, he just kisses me. Lol
  9. Ha, wholesale ended up close to 600.00. Still looking into other options. Spent Saturday looking but this may end up being a long process. Hubby is a dyi-er and EVERYTHING must be modified! Lol Well he is not really a diy guy, did all type of contruction before just not any more, now he just sells supplies to the builders. I have a game room we built and it is dubbed our "safe room" bc if anything happens thats were to go. Those walls are not going anywhere, lol. He missed his calling as an engineer.
  10. Yeah for you! He is beautiful! Keep it up Twix!
  11. Yikes! I love birds and all but hawks, not so much! Egrets are moving to my "can do without" list too!
  12. Wow, that petstore has some issues! I am glad to hear though you are trying again!
  13. My stress point to all is that these guys are a commitment, not something to be entered into lightly. It is just like having a child who really doesn't grow up and forget the moving out at 18 part! Lol You need to fid (kid with feathers) proof your house and hide your remotes and pens, and just when you think you have done everything you could, they will bring to your attention something you forgot! They are cute and smart which is why they are in demand as a token for some, then these people see its hard work and either get rid of them or neglect them. Judygram is correct about the wild caught birds. Damn shame! ( read Twix thread, i think it is titled " Can't go back there") I would love to read your speech on my favorite subject! African Greys!
  14. We are giving him some time to do it on his own first but he has so many new feathers coming in on his chest and back and keeps plucking them, we are discussing a vest. Stewart will be getting a harness soon too. Until these guys were comfortable with us i didn't want to throw a bunch of scary stuff at them! Oliver is screaming today, just looking out the window. Its like he knows he can't go out. So i ran to the farmers market and got them an ear of corn, they love that but it is given only as a treat. That should take his mind off of the sun shine for oh, i don't know, 10 minutes give or take! Gotta admit though, he is a quick learner, i won't react to his screams, instead i wait for him to say hello, then i will go to him. He however said hello when i was unable to stop what i was doing and i had to listen to him saying it, with me repeating it, for close to 5 minutes. If someone walked by they would think i had a crazy house! Lol I found a 10x10 6' tall dog run today for $248, not bad until you factor in another panel for the top, that was $160.00 lol, not even the hot dipped galvanized which is what they really need. Hubby is leaving work at 2 today, maybe i can sweet talk him into checking out a fence supply today so we can have it up by Sunday! Got some friends in construction who can get it wholesale! Fingers crossed they are not at the races today.

How cute! I love the fork!
  16. Close call yesterday. Been having a hawk issue in our back yard so we decided out front only and never far from them, arm only. Oliver wanted on his stand and climbed up by his self with hubby there supervising. I had 3 neighbors over and my niece, she wanted to hold Stewart so we moved into the yard a bit and i put him on her arm with me on one side and Trisha on the other. My husband removed Oliver from the stand and put him under the porch. Just as he set him down on the chair a hawk flew mere inches from Trishas shoulder and then right over the stand Oliver had just been on. It took a while for my heart to stop pounding in my ears! No more outside until they get their aviary, which i am going out today to look for! Here is Olivers last outting, look at that smile! Going to be hard to tell him no, but not so hard when you think of the alternate!
  17. Welcome! Agreed, being jealous is a great motivator! I was told my 5year old grey did not like to be touched. Ha, 4 months later he will not step up until you tickle his head and neck, just a few strokes and he is good to go, just from watching us with our other guy! I am still hoping it will work for the talking as Stewart clammed up when we brought him home, Oliver, a blue and gold macaw we aquired a few weeks after Stewart is talking away already so we make a big deal out of it in front of him!
  18. Congrats and welcome to the family! Amy is a cutie, thanks for sharing the picture! I agree, don't worry about the training perch, let her settle into her new surroundings.
  19. Well we had our last outting today. As i said, no more back yard so we went out front, covered porch, losts of trees. 3 of our neighbors came over and my niece wanted to hold Stewart, which she regularly does, so we walked out to the yard not far from the porch. I put Stewart on her arm and i stood on one side of her and Trisha stood on the other, kinda like a u shape. Oliver was on his perch right off the porch and my husband picked him up to get him out of the sun, his 5 minutes were up. Just as he sat down with him a hawk flew mere inches away from Trishas shoulder, then up over the stand where Oliver had been moments before. We high taled the kids inside and will be looking for an aviary tomorrow. Once inside though the hawk tried again, this time trying to land in our back yard. I miss my ducks, my harmless cute ducks! This was Oliver on his last outting for a while! Look at that smile, it is going to break my heart telling him no, but i would rather it break because of a simple no than because he was carried off!
  20. Lol. Perfect phrasing with the awwww, ewwww!
  21. I am getting confused. Rhinolith is defined as stones in the nose and they should be removed. What was the shot for? I mean, i understand antibiotics need to be given, but if he gave him a shot in his leg, why did he keep him for 5 days? Even oral antibiotics take longer than 5 days and that is something most do at home so what was the point? If he is laying sideways on a perch, its way more than a nose stone that effects respitory, i don't recall reading anywhere that he had labored breathing or a runny nose. It does say that Rhinolith is caused by malnutrition and poor air quality. I am going to go out on a limb here and say this, i know you said he was only on seeds and you are changing that, yeah!, but keeping his area clean and good clean air is also a must, so no smoking anywhere near him or within your house please. And if you do smoke, not saying you do, wash your hands before handling him! :-) Dark greens can be from beets, broccolie, which i can't spell, those types of things. Check out the thread on recepies for our greys, they have good mixtures that hide the good stuff most birds won't eat by mixing it in stuff they love! Good luck!
  22. Stewart will not eat nuts of any kind. I still offer them to him and i think he takes them from me to be polite, then he just drops it to the bottom. He had a VERY bad beak trim before i got him and figured he just couldn't crack them, but like yours, once in a blue moon he will crack a peanut and gnaw on the shell for a bit. Since January i have not seen him eat a nut.
  23. Welcome. I have not ever heard of that but i am sure someone has. If no one replies tonight, try calling an avian vet in the morning since you are making your decision tomorrow! Good luck!
