  1. Lol, oh boy are the macaws loud! Each morning and evening we have to listen to him scream for a few minutes. Per our vet, this is the only screaming we need to let him do as he is calling to his flock. First time we heard this my poor husband thought he had hurt himself and tore off to check, he hurdled the baby gate in their door, scared our grey who flew off his cage, he then fell to the floor awkwardly to avoid landing on him only to see the macaw dancing back and forth across his cage. Best hours if laughing we had in a long time! A friend of ours down the street had a neighbor call the police to their home because they thought someone was being hurt within their house, cops showed up and heard the screaming. Didn't believe it was the bird until they were inside and she screamed again!
  2. That is the best picture! He is soooo cute! Yes, the food is good but i agree, too many peanuts. I have been removing them from the bowls and he will get one at bedtime.
  3. Twix, i know how special DJ is to you and it has brought tears to my eyes reading the pure joy and happiness you two have experienced together!
  4. I have a rescue grey and a rescue macaw. The macaw was in the same boat as you described. Was with a female for over a year but they "hate" each other, not sure how they made it a year together in the same cage! My story with the grey is diff from most as i have been reading. He accepted his new home with very little stress. He has stopped talking but still imitates everything and is as sweet as can be. I have only had these two since january but wouldn't change anything ( cept Oliver being sick, macaw ). Should you go with the rescue, go into it with few expectations from him. Most rescues come with baggage and things go slow but steady but the rewards with each step are wonderful! For me, rescue over baby any day. Each person has their own feelings and only you know what is right for you and your family! Congrats to you and which ever one chooses you! :-)
  5. Had a great day yesterday, boys got to go out and play! Headed for the high 90's today and tomorrow so until we get the misters around their aviary, i don't want to overheat Oliver. Been having issues with him eating past few days, he has an addiction to nuts, thats all he wants now. I went and got him the zupreem nuts pellets to get him started, they are shaped like the nuts. He even holds them in his foot like a real nut, when he hits a roudybush pellet he will eat it normally. I only give him 2-3 nuts a day now. The first vet said to give him whatever he wants to get weight on him, now i regret following that advice. He had some peas and carrots this morning, not much, but i pulled the seed out leaving just the pellets and veggies right now. Will put the seed back in there in about an hour. ( i pulled all the nuts from the seed too. Lol )
  6. Good luck! I feel he will be just fine! Excited for you to be bringing him home!
  7. I am with Nancy! What ever we can do, we are here for you! You have a a great start to show the police your ownership by the threads posted here. There is also your avitar photo with a leg band right there, maybe it can be enlarged some to even get partial numbers off of!
  8. Ozzy, Stewart i was told is 5 yrs. I can not believe i forgot the drop it in a cup game! When i first brought him home i would do that with him every night, sometimes he would play. I will try it again! I have been batting around getting him a babble ball, it talks or makes noises when banged around. (i just am not fond of the noises, lol.) i think i will try the little ball first! Nancy, oh we tell him no when he bites, and mind you it really isn't a hard bite. I just worry that i am sending him mixed signals with that hand game. But he does enjoy it so i will keep trying and see if he will soon start playing it my way! Lol
  9. Go to the police! Take your stand and don't just let them do this! For all you know, these people were in your home checking things out to come back and get later on. Atleast the police would be aware there are people out there pretending to be the real deal!
  10. The feed store isn't in my town but i am sure knowing now all the parrot stuff they offer i will be going back! I will check out the brand name.
  11. Lol, got another phonebook delivered yesterday. I have tried hand games with him but i am torn with that. First i can not tell if he likes it, he chases my fingers and bites them, not hard, but i don't want him thinking finger biting is okay. He wasn't nippy until we started that game. Now when i try for the step up, he lowers his head for petting and i get about 2 good strokes in then he turns his head and bites hard but then he steps right up. Its like i have taught him that biting is okay, i get nipped now changing food and water bowls. I thought too that i was special to him because he kisses me all the time, yesterday he kissed everything! His playstand, his paper roll, the apple, the window and the air! To see him walking to the edge of his stand and kissing it with a big kissy noise is a sight to behold. No loyalty, lol.
  12. I feel we are the lucky ones! Getting these boys were are gift! Each kiss i get is a blessing! I love them! :-)
  13. They tend to follow me! Last year i got bit on my upper butt! Flew down my pants and didn't feel to good. Bees and June bugs scare the poo outta me! Lol snakes and mice are just fine, even spiders don't bother me! Lol
  14. We talked about that and a grapevine, but decided no flowering things we couldn't move because of bees. Lol
  15. I posted a reply yesterday but it didn't make it on. Sorry. Hubby couldn't remember the brand of the wire either. Lol i think the excitement took up most of the room in our brains. I do remember looking at the pictures on the wrap and asked Pat why they had a picture of a lovebird, a parrot and a rabbit on it, then i i had a duh moment when he said the parrot has its own picture because they are beak climbers. No, the home improvement stores do not carry bird safe wire. We both work ( well i retired in oct last year ) at one of those and we couldn't get it through them. We got ours through a feed store who has half their store devoted to parrots, even working with rescue centers. After our cleaned and powerwashed crape myrtle branches dried in the sun for a few days, we were able to install them. Oliver (macaw) can not fly so Pat wanted to be sure he could get anywhere he wanted so i have started calling this the myrtle maze. Stewart (grey) almost got in the foutain with a little coaxing from me. Almost got in, lol.
  16. 2 times now i have made posts and i am either hitting the exit button or they are going into cyber space... Hmmm. We had a great few days. Our crape myrtal branches dried in the sun after a cleaning so late Saturday we got to put them in place. Pat wanted to be sure Oliver could get all over since he doesn't fly, i call it their myrtal maze. Also almost got Stewart into the foutain! Almost... I will be adding 3 ferns across the front to block some afternoon sun, otherwise it is complete! They spent all day out there yesterday and loved it!
  17. This was from a supply company. Bird safe, its called welded wire something something... Lol... Sorry to not know exactly what, thats hubbys job. Lol I am the builders gopher. "I need this" and i go get it! I get the ideas and he makes it happen!
  18. Yea, we did that, lol. I flipped pages and made a phone book look like a treasure. Oliver fell for it, Stewart not so much! We did have a good one on one play time today, i tried the hide and seek as suggested. Not sure if he liked it but hey, its new and he didn't bite or fly so we will try it again tomorrow. I had fun with him anyway, lol.
  19. Took 2 days but the aviary is built! We found a 6' x10' x 5' dog run on craigs list for $50.00. A little adjustments and we now have a bird safe 6' x10' x 8' wonderland! The boys love it! We took off the chain link and put in the welded wire so there could be lots of climbing with no lost toes! Put in a water feature they can play, bathe and frolic in! More stuff we will be adding but i couldn't wait to share this! I have one grey and one b&g macaw that are in heaven! Watching them in there today brought tears to our eyes. They were rescued 4 months ago and how their lives have changed!
  20. We are so happy with it! Tonight, all our neighbors came over and we were not looking around at the sky or looking closely at our dogs, worrying if they (Stewart) was going to fly. It is wonderful to put them in and let them be birds! We still have alot of work to do on it but thats going to be the fun stuff!! Lol
  21. We did see that one. Thats Pats goal with Oliver, not sliding, but getting him one his back! We are done except for the decorating! Here are some pictures of them enjoying the room!
  22. Yeah soy! Stewart however, totally afraid of the phonebook. He sat inside his cage on a perch and didn't move for over an hour. All i did was set it on top of his cage. I even cut it up some since it was so big. Hrrumpfff! Oh well, the search continues, phonebook still there for him though just in case. Lol We will be finishing his outdoor aviary today so since he has been flying (trying too) this should be fun for him!
  23. We under estimated the strength of wire. Dang it is tuff to work with. Not to mention Pat wanted it taller than 6' so he wouldn't bump his head which meant we had to cut poles and adjust everything. Then came the wire... It was cheaper to buy it 4' than 3' so it is now 8' tall, 10' long and 6' wide. It is huge. We were unable to finish it today, got all but the door and top completed. We will be able to finish tomorrow as long as the rain holds off. But then we have the issue of it being to heavy for just us two to move into place. Lol I am putting in a picture of what we did today. I don't know whats up with Mr. Stewart, most mornings i opened his cage and he will come out on the door, poop and got to the top to wait for breakfast. This morning i opened the door and he climbed out and tried flying again, landed a bit better. This evening during our play time, he climbed up to my shoulder and flew off, walked back to me to do it again. I wonder if he was flighted before we got him, he was clipped very badly and we are still working on getting them back into shape.
