Our heater/ AC unit quit working this weekend. We didn't figure it out thought until Saturday after hours of course. Sunday was great, warm weather thank heaven. Storms were supposed to hit Monday and i had jury duty, but the temp was upper 60's. Repair man came this evening and found out that the unit was fine, there is something up with the electrical. I freaked and paniced as a cold front is moving in tomorrow. This poor guy was scared to death of the birds but understood my panic about it. He very calmly said," your guys will be just fine, use your emergeny heat." Pat and i looked at him like he was crazy. We bought this unit in 06, what is he talking about? Lol Turns out we bought a unit with a back up! It has both heat and air if our outside unit fails. Thank goodness cuz the electrican can't come till the weekend. So, something to think about when replacing your unit! It also has a built in humidifier. Lol, who knew!

Yeah, usually we can tell when he gets in that mood. My hand bite though was unusual. He seems to be changing to Pat now as his buddy, he is settling in and changing. Still as cute as a button though. :-) lol

Now I Really Know Why They Have A Canary in The Mine
murfchck replied to Luvparrots's topic in Canaries
Great job! Keeping your wits in a tough situation! Yeah to you both! -
Yeah! Whats funny is how hard we all work to get our greys to trust us and want to be with us all the time, but in a few months we are saying, if only i could go to the bathroom by myself! Lol

Gus was a stinker yesterday! He just gets so excited when he is playing. We were on the couch watching a movie, he was just in my lap. Out of no where he started hopping around, he got near my hand then just bit down on it. One hole on the top of my hand another on my palm. If that wasn't enough, he flew to Bongo and Gabbys stand and grabbed the cord of the blinds and started swinging his head around in circles. The greys can't reach the blinds so it was never an issue. I didn't want him getting tangled in it so i tried the old switch a roo with a step up. Got the step up but he opted for the skin and blood in my arm, not the toy i offered. Not sure how to change the excited behaviour when he plays because i don't want to discourage him playing. If i do the no bite time out, will he think he shouldn't be playing?

Wonderful news on the progress! Great going!

That was great! I just never get bored watching a happy bird! Thank you for sharing.

I am so sorry. Happy to hear Lilly 2 is with you to help ease the heartache.

We are trying again with the feather in product. Oliver, Bubba and Gus. I mixed it right finally and it went great, Gus was the only one who didn't like it but i don't think he is use to regular bathing. He is a feather chewer and his chest is bald so, it can't hurt anything.

Our Rehomed Friends are swearing a LOT now. *Ares and Apollo*
murfchck replied to BS2K's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
My rehomed came to us knowing a few bad words. It took him a few months to say them in our home. Once he dropped the f bomb at such a perfect time and with such shock in the tone and dragged it out as another of our fids did a fly by over his head and scared the crap out of him. As funny as it was we made no reaction, walked outside and then laughed until we cried. Try really hard to ignore it. My umbrella called me a sh@#head last night after a bath, again i had to go outside. He came to us in November, had no idea he knew bad words. -
Ahh, i went to my regulat pet supply places today to find grapevine but only found smooth one, thanks for showing that picture and where you got them. I will look tonight online. Bongo does play in his cage in the low light time before bed, but its with a whiffle ball and a baby play phone. And his bells, Lord love a duck, his bells! Lol Oh and his roll of adding paper.

I too have one that crouches down flipping his wing like a baby for some warm mushy steamed and mashed acorn squash, and he is 6 years old! Or oatmeal or cream of wheat... You can't just put it in a bowl either, he wants hand fed with a spoon by God! Lol (Bubba)
-
Welcome to the both of you!
-
Its funny, but he isn't a climber either. It is kinda sad how he just sits on the stand and walks where he can walk, but that is an upgrade from when we got him. We use to call him our statue, he has really started to venture some. He flys to me now with just a whistle but is petrified of everything. I will try grapevine, it sure can't hurt! Thanks!

I know! I can't believe i am upset about his weight. They said he is holding his own and thats good news. One year ago he was 20g thinner. I feel bad though, today he is moving soooo slow. He doesn't do well with nail trims. Bongos beak grows fast cuz he doesn't chew wood or even eat nuts to help maintain it, so we'll be back soon. He had three trims in one year, and that should have been 4.
-
I will but Bongos weight was within 5 grams of our scale.
-
Wow, that came out large. Sorry bout that. Notice the thumb nail on Pats hand, that was a Bubba bite he got trying to seperate him and Oliver at bed time. Ouch!
-
So much for the harness, Gus has decided it is a much better foot toy.

According to the vet, Oliver is doing good. I am not sure about his weight they took. We have been weighing them all and his came in at 870g. Our scale had him last at 940g. They said that scales vary but Bongos weight was right on target. Other than that, Ollie is doing great. Bongo on the other hand has a thick beak that grows straight out, top and bottom, it should grow downwards. I was told by another vet that he had a liver issue as a baby causing the thick beak, my vet said liver wouldn't cause that. He wants to do bloodwork later on, maybe after his next beak trim so he can see exactly how it is growing. Said it could be as simple as adding to or changing his diet. Dang, he was my healthy one! He did a wonderful job on his beak though, and Bongo wasn't even phased by it. For the first time he looks like a normal grey. Gotta watch his bites now, he is a strong sucker but had never broken skin because of the thickness, now him and Gabby look alike other than her leg!

Do some greys just not like to be scratched/petted?
murfchck replied to Arecibo's Mum's topic in The GREY Lounge
Some just don't like it. I have one that let me pet him for a few weeks, then stopped. Now i can really only touch him on his terms and his time line. -
I guess so. All's well that ends well! They are here with us now enjoying life! Well maybe not Bongo and Oliver, they are at the vet, lol. Only 3 birds in my house right now. What to do, what to do?! Lol
-
Off to the vet in a few hours! It was a beautiful weekend so all the kiddos were in the aviary! That was our chance to modify the large stand for the macaws. We seperated them and put Oliver on a smaller one cuz he kept falling off the big one but after a month we found that it wasn't working for them. Bubba would jump off the big one and try and climb up Olivers, sometimes making it. Oliver was always trying to climb down his too. So, we added a butt load of branches making it look like a highway mix master. Added 3 boings for them to climb on and easy access to all the levels they have never used before. And if they do slip, there are lots of places for them to try and grab hold of to keep from hitting the floor! It was pretty funny though, when they were outside Pat went and got them each a nut and handed them out then went back inside. Bubba yelled "Pat" and when Pat answered him with "What? I am inside." Bubba dropped his nut and very loudly said "Crap!" His use of words floor me sometimes. The flybye of Gabby and him being shocked by it saying the f word as she flew overhead. And my favorite of Pat trying to pick him up and him taking off running saying "help, help". Sometimes Oliver will beak him and he will make a little noise then look at us and say, "Ouch".
