  1. You are doing great! What a cutie pie you have there! You will both find your groove, hang in there.
  2. We had to teach our grey to fly again. He still just does short flights around the house but we started out just a few feet apart. Hubby would hold him and i would call him with a whistle that we decided would work for him if he should ever get out. Its kind of funny now, we still do the whistle, but we noticed that would walk back and forth on his stand until he pooped, then he would fly to me. So now i whistle his call, then say poop-fly, followed by the whistle again. If i ever have to look for him outside, i will sound like an idiot! It was harder to help our macaw gain his strength back, but it is working. He chewed all his long wing feathers off, nervous habit he has. We know he can't fly so felt safe taking him outside, holding his feet we would run around the yard letting him just flap away. http://s1296.beta.photobucket.com/user/murfchck/media/VIDEO0047_zpsab555b1b.mp4.html
  3. I am so sorry. My thoughts are with you.
  4. Lol, i have no advice but really loved the pictures!
  5. Welcome! Sounds like your off to a wonderful start! Just try not to push him too much for the step up, it could cause a few steps bacwards if he is not ready. I have 2 rehomed greys (6 yr and 20 yr old) and they are a handful, but worth every minute! Each day brings new discoveries as you will soon find out. Thank you for rehoming and letting a grey into your heart!
  6. Yeah, they don't get corn alot because of the sugar but it was v-day and they deserved a fun yummy treat too! I love spoiling these guys, within reason. Lol
  7. Got a call about Cotay. While she was playing on her cage she made a fart noise, when they turned and looked at her she told them, "must be gas". Then she burped. What a cutie! She has been doing good and adjusting well! Yeah!
  8. Ha, never thought about the hat being a big beak, makes sense. Gus has been doing great, screaming is still happening but not nearly as often. Found out a food fav last night, corn on the cob. I got an ear, divided it into 5 sections and steamed it, also they got a section of a twice backed potatoe. That boy really dove into it for the first time since he has been with us. I have seen an ant carry stuff larger than the bites he takes when he eats, and hold food with his foot, no way. All that changed last night with that meal.
  9. To toss in my 2¢ here. Our 2nd rehomed grey disliked me greatly. When we picked her up, she gave me kisses, flew to me, the whole 9 yards. I know now she was just acting, she would have kisses a horse to get out of that place! It has been many, many months but i can now pick her up if i need too. She tolerates me but would gladly kick me out of my house to be alone with my husband. A grey is not for everyone, they really are fragile. Their emotions are great as are their needs. All the you tube videos and books that are out are great no doubt, but they don't tell you about or show you the greys that don't talk or won't play or are too scared to even leave their cage. A grey should come home with you only if you can accept him or her for who they are and if you are ready to put in the time they need.
  10. Welcome to you and Loki! You will be a wonderful parront! When i got my first grey, i searched the internet over looking for answers, then i found this forum. 5 wonderful fiddos later, I never looked back to anywhere else and have never left here. Everyone is wonderful and oh so helpful. There is never a silly question, so ask away. I am also just a stones throw away from you. North Richland Hills!
  11. Lol, mine eat the green and toss the red. With apples neither straight red or straight green, must have both colors on that skin or out of the bowl it goes! Bananas however i get the hurry up whistle! The greys will also only eat an orange if my husband hands it to them, if i try to put that in their bowl, forget it.
  12. Bongo is my baby boy. No waves tonight but dancing and cooing AND he let me give him kisses from his head to the tip of his tale down his back all the while making kissing noises. He makes me sooo proud! I really do not know how to describe the feeling you get when one just opens up and decides, "ok, i do trust you and you are going to get love like you have never known!" My smile has not gone away today and the interaction today has just made it bigger. I don't need a bird to perform, i just need a bird to know he is loved and safe. Bongo has never bitten me, my others have, but to me and in my opinion only, they bite out of fear, not because they are " just mean". Time in a good home that allows them their given rights and a whole lot of love and understanding of the situation they were in and the time that they need to realize that those days are behind them is all they need to become the happy beautiful birds they really are. I truely love my misfit family and all they are and what they will become!
  13. Through the tears and heartache i am feeling for you, i want to say how sorry i am. Do not blame yourself for this. You gave your baby the best, enjoy the memories and you will know when the time comes to love another.
  14. Lol, i don't see where you have a choice! They are both cute and actually to me the second one looks just as sweet, just more curious than the first. In my opinion, with the second you will get the best of both grey worlds, the sweetheart and the nosey booger! I like the more active ones. I have one of each, the fearless, nosey into everything and the sweet, calm, does nothing wrong. With the active one, i never worry about her being bored, the calm one i am always questioning myself if there is something i am missing to make his life better. Lol
  15. So, Bongo has been with us for a little over a year now. You may have read how we call him our statue, or how he won't play, stopped talking. My little boy's wall is starting to crack! He is starting to give up his stealth mode act and is joining in the fun, even starting stuff on his own. He has started whistling his own songs while out on his stand, bobbing his head up and down dancing. He flys to me now, where even i am and when ever he wants. This started about a week ago, now he even whistles his songs while on my arm! Last night during our alone time, he was just playing with some toys, bobbing his head then he did it!! He waved at me. I always watch his foot because he lifts it up when i talk with him but just as fast as he lifts it, he puts it in his beak and chews his nails. I thought maybe it was a fluke that he waved so we did it 2 more times. He really waves! I am just so proud of him!
  16. No joke! Bongo hates getting misted, yet the little dork, 80% of the time, hops in his water bowl and floods his cage and the floor. And only does this after he watches me pain stakenly clean his cage!
  17. I am so glad to hear you are all okay! Great thinking on your part! Even though we don't ever use our fireplace, really makes me want to get it cleaned and buy some wood to keep on hand.
  18. My little girl makes that noise when she gets excited playing with daddy. To me, its a normal noise! What a cutie your going to be bringing home, Congrats!
  19. We do love it out there with the fiddos, it is so relaxing... Until Gus starts screaming! Lol
  20. Had to visit her yesterday! She was just mumbling away, saying hello and her name and some other things i couldn't understand. She gets her big girl cage today, she has been out other than sleeping. I took them an O-stand i had, some dowels and long perches for them to install on it. (all new, for some odd reason i have a whole bunch of bird supplies, go figure!) She loved it. Of course had to take an adding paper toy with hemp string tied all over it for her to preen. A coffe box with paper wrapped almonds, peanuts and treats. Wrapped a bag up full of stuff for their other bird too. This was my first time seeing her in the daylight and she was sooo dusty. You could actually see it on her exposed feathers, she was such a light grey color yet her feathers that were covered by other feathers were a much darker grey. Since she is a fearless birdie, i suggested a aloe spray bath, which i just happened to have for her. To my suprise, after telling her how most greys are not fond of bath time, Cotay ran right into the shower water, shaking her butt and loving it. I wonder if that added to her plucking, hmmm. Lol Its pretty funny, my hubby was actually talking about how we could have put Bubba back in his old cage and put the divider in his double macaw cage and take Cotay home with us that her and Gabby could share that big cage! We had to keep reminding ourselves that our hands are full!
  21. We have built a few. There is a parrot safe welded wire at feed stores. Not too expensive but more than what you would pay at a hardware store. It has been a while ago and the name of it escapes me but the price was about 175.00 for a 50'. 2 aviaries that are 8'x10'x10' took 2 and a half rolls. They are really pretty simple to make too. We used a dog run, removed the chainlink, then modified it to the shape and height we wanted. It is nice bc there is a door already, lol. Topped it with bamboo fencing (over the wire of course)
  22. I have a 20 yr old, Gabby, fully feathered. And in my home a fully feathered bird is odd, lol, 3 out of 5 are pluckers. The 2 that don't pluck are both greys.
  23. Found them a great cage on craigs list, just hope the funds open up for them. Lol Getting a bird on the fly is tuff on the pocket book. She was out of the makeshift cage almost all day. Got a great picture of her hubby with Cotay on his arm, just sitting back watching tv. She was exploring her new home right away, and i am very hopeful thing will be great for her now!
  24. I am starting to think i am a magnet to hard luck cases. This is Cotay, a 12 yr old grey. Looking at her "cage", are you suprised she is a plucker? I picked her up last night and found her a good home within an hour. The feathers around the back of her neck are red, she is really beautiful. She talks and whistles but a bit nippy they said. I felt very good about the family who took her in, she ran right over to the wife, which was good, she ran from me. The hubby on the otherhand was less than thrilled, although he has always wanted a grey. His wife said he was just "acting" like he wasn't happy about it. I told her any issues what so ever and she comes back to my house, i didn't rescue this girl to be homed in a house that fights about her!
  25. I am so glad everyone is safe and sound, otherwise i could not say this... That is funny as crap! ROTF!
