    Toys

They do not use their feet the same way a larger parrot does so they will carry their toys and toss them around or just bang them around if they are hanging. PS mine like ladders
  9. Able to fly through the house at amazing speeds.14 inch ear span. A brown long haired female Dachshund to go with my black short hair male dachshund.

    Memories

Love that story. and I understand how you felt. I have had many Parakeets as a child and as a grown up. I think the introduction of parrots to many of our lives was parakeets. As a child if you had a parakeet you had a parrot and that was kind of a big thing back than.

    Diet

As always Jay and Maggie gave you a good list of food that is good for them. Some times as a treat mine get The crust of Wheat toast and or a small no salt cracker

    Toys

Jay is right, they like small things that they can carry around in their beak or push around at the bottom of their cage. Hanging things they can reach just far enough away from their perch so they have to stretch to reach them. Some times they have a favorite toy so I will rotate the others but always leave their favorite toy in the cage. They love earrings so if they are on your shoulder and you have earrings on they will remove them.
  13. Until I read your post on Java I did not know anthing about Red Bellied parrots and that goes for alot of other parrots too. As I find out about Java and the other parrot members on this forum I now know not to try and out smart a parrot of any kind because I will not win.
  14. I was over in the other birds room reading all the post in the new group of sub rooms over there. Cricket was on my shoulder and she lowered her head as if she was reading what I was typing. I think I heard her say "Other birds room, what the hell are you doing over there" "Cockatiels, They live in the next cage, Why are you writing about them". "You belong in the Amazon room" OK, Maybe I stretched the truth on that one and maybe because as I was reading all the posts in the new sub rooms and I was not giving Cricket all the attention she thinks she deserved. So I thought I better get back over here and talk about zons be for Penny(AKA Talon) terminatrs me as a mod and hires some one new for less money. I am looking for members that have zons with special talants. Like does any one have a zon that can toot the alphabet.
  15. I give it a week. At best. OK six days!!
  16. They say you should never ever put a cockatiel and a parakeet in the same cage together. I had a male cockatiel named JB (JB was short for Just Bird) that could talk up a storm. We also had this male parakeet that would always spend time with JB when they were both out of there cage and his name was buddy. They were true friends in every way. Buddy had his own small cage but he would always go to JB`s cage and go inside and spend time with him. Well Buddy needed a new cage and we were going to get him one so we put Buddy into JB`s cage just as a temporary home until we bought him a new one. Well JB cage was very largs for a tiel cage 36Wx24Dx48H Well they got along so good that we never got a cage for Buddy JB talked all the time and one day we heard JB but it was in a little voice, Come to find out Buddy could say almost every word that JB could. They would sit next to each other and talk all day to each other Strange bed fellows and they lived with each other for many years. So much for what you can`t do

    Help asap!

Ok I say go for it and this is why. A cockatiel just like any other parrot has a time when they can be vocal. But they do not make the noise that we as parrot people know with our greys and zons. With a little attention they calm down. Even at their loudest there is no match to our greys and zons. There are many times I wish they were more vocal. My tiles will try to keep up with Corky, but there no match. We have greys and zons and there is no way a cockatiels can run us out of town.
  18. How many subspecies of cockatoos are there ??
  19. Sounds like you and Marco are building a life time bond. Keep up what you are doing and your relationship will grow and you will not have to use a pumpkin seed for her to come to you, she will come to you because she wants too. They are a lifetime of fun and enjoyment.
  20. Hi bigmick9445 and welcome to you and Charlie to the grey forum. Sounds like you and Charlie are off to a good start. Any time you have a question we will do our best to help you out. We love pictures !!
  21. You are doing great and now that Java has her own place on this board she does not have to take a back seat to any other fid. Hope to here a lot more about Java.. Ray
  22. Hi naya and welcome to the gery forum. Give your new grey a chance to settle in. Every thing is new to her and she will need some time. Every time you go by her cage say hello in a calm voice, sit by her cage and talk to her, offer some treats and make her feel wanted and she will come around. It just takes "time".
  23. Great intro Dee After I read your post about Java I have looked them up and they sound like a awesome parrot.

    Parakeets

The word Parakeet means (Longe Tail)and the name is used in the name of many other Species around the world. For this forum I think the name to use should be budgie or budgerigar known as the common pet parakeet or Shell Parakeet and infoemally nicknamed Budgie. They are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia and have survived harsh inland conditions. Budgies are popular around the world as pets because of their small size, low cost and their ability to mimic human speach and their playful nature.
  25. A cockatiels dust resembles a cross between dandruff and a fine grey greasy powder. If you have allergies it is not recomended to have a tiel. When it comes to dander a cockatiel is not as bad as a cockatoo. If you have a tiel you will dust alot.
