Unfortunately I had that what if situation. I'm glad I never had the band removed, it's the only thing right now that may lead him back to me but on it's own isn't enough, I wish I had micro chipped him for that extra insurance. The problem I've had here in the UK there is no proper register for people to check using the band who he belongs to, it only works if he is found & I happen to get chance to go see him & I can then take my paperwork proving he is mine. If he was micro chipped at least if he is taken to the vets as found they scan him & they have my details to re-unite us. Still no guarantees but better than just the band alone & for those greys that have no band or micro chips they have no hope of getting back to the owners. I wish they would hurry up & make a GPS micro chip that is small enough to be used in pets, it would cut down on so much loss & pain. Another idea I've had is to have a band made up with your phone number on, that way when they are found you will get a phone call to say your bird has been found.

Very concerned first time owner ... a lot of questions !!!

My new grey is the exact same but I actually enjoy all the chatter & all the stupid noises. It is part of grey ownership & I don't think you can really change it to be honest. The best you can do, is do the things Dave007 has suggested to give her something else to do like some wood to chew. You could also get some foraging toys & fill them with food & that will keep her occupied for longer while she is eating. Also if she is making noises you don't like, all you can do is ignore them but reward the stuff you don't mind listening to like talking etc. So if she is screaming bloody murder, totally ignore it & don't let her see that it annoys you in any way & most definitely don't tell her to shut up as that's what she will want. Ignore the unwanted noises & reward the good noises with praise, tickles & treats. -
I also got a bite on the lip the second day. I had let her out in the morning while I having breakfast & she flew down to my shoulder while I was eating cornflakes, she then lunged forward & bit my lip....................Ouch!!!!! I'm thinking maybe she was actually trying to get some food from my mouth when she seen me eat a spoonful & thought my lip was a cornflake, she must have thought Mmmmm that looks good........lol. She was so quick & caught me by surprise, I ended up with a fat lip for a few hours. Touch wood though she has been fine ever since, so hoping it just a minor hiccup as I don't like savaged hands & fat lips.

Well we got a new family member the other day, & the sweet little grey wasn't so sweet when she savaged my hand...........lol. I popped my hand in to adjust a perch & she just went for the hand, I tried to ignore it but the pain was excruciating. I left her for a while then asked her to step up & she threatened to go for me again but didn't & stepped up instead. Things have been ok since although she does tend to bite my finger when I offer it for tickles, kinda has a tickle then bites me, then has a tickle again. I think she maybe testing the boundaries & keeping a check on me while she earns my trust. I'm sure we will get there in the end.

I have the same problem with my new grey, she came to me the other day & think she's a girl but can't decide a name. -
When I first got Murphy his nails were very sharp & it hurt to hold him on the hand, I tried a few different perches but only one worked & that was the concrete twister perch. It was one of the best things I ever bought & soon trimmed the sharp tip off his nails & they stayed trimmed all the time I had him. I also have a variety of different size & shaped perches inc a few natural branches & I never had to clip nails again.

That was some scare for you both, glad everything is ok.

When I got Murphy at 12 weeks he was raised by a woman & was DNA sexed as male, but it was me who was his favorite. Now we have this new girlie, we have yet to find out but so far it's me she chases after but will still go to Kate without any problem.

You have joined the right place my friend. There is no where else on the net that can help you with grey ownership like grey forums. You can read books, watch vids etc but a forum with lots of experienced owners is the best place to be for help & the most up to date. keep coming back with any questions & keep us updated on your progress with your new grey friend. Good luck! -
She's in very good condition, she has spent the last month in the care of a vet who have their own cockatoo so they know how to look after parrots. They did say that she was in good condition when she came to them though. I have done some hunting on the net & found this link that was given to me on another forum to identify males from females. http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/appgreys.html According to the info, it seems that little grey could well be a she. She has the fine grey tips on the end of some of her red tail feathers.

For Murphy & all the lost greys out there I'm going to do my best to give her a good life.
-
Some more pics, I'm so amazed how she has settled in. Only been here a couple of hours & already sat on the stand preening, lots of tail wags, whistles & kisses & a few words already. Also had a good feed & a few grapes.

Well, little grey is finally here. Sitting happily in the cage chatting away. Amazing how comfortable he/she was when she arrived, straight out of the box & on to my shoulder. You would think this little grey knows me & had been here forever. Considering how greys normally are, I'm so surprised how she has settled in so quick.
-
Of course!
-
Me too................something about these greys that tugs my heart strings.
-
I got a txt this evening saying grey is coming over to my house tomorrow evening.
-
Well I already have a few names floating about my head but I need to know what sex it is first. Still trying not to get too excited until Wednesday though.

Ok, well a little update on the progress of the situation. The lady has emailed today to say that they have spoken to the RSPCA officer who wasn't all that helpful, turns out that the RSPCA have to keep animals for 7 days before re-home. The RSPCA have said that basically, if the lady wants to go through them, the grey will need to go to them while they do a home inspection on me & then I will have to pay a donation if I pass the home inspection. I said I'm happy to do that although I would rather not put the grey through all that messing about. So between us tonight we have agreed that we seem to be the only people who actually care for the welfare of this lost/found grey(I know you guys on here care). She has told me that I can have the grey on Wednesday which I said I'm happy to do, told her I'd get the cage ready & waiting. So it seems as if this little grey is coming to me on Wednesday but I'm not going to jump for joy until she is actually here. I have to say though I can't wait.................fingers crossed it all goes well & I do get her Wednesday. Just thought I'd share with all my friends on grey forums.
-
Well the only update is the lady is still waiting to talk to their RSPCA officer for advise, she thinking if doing the re-home through them if possible so there is a record of it all. She won't be able to speak to them till Monday now. I was looking forward to maybe having her this weekend but like they say "all good things come to those who wait".
-
As Dan said, he is right on the nail......love & patience.
-
I'm not quite sure how many days, I know she said it's over three weeks now so that's at least 21 days. She was talking about the next few days when on the phone to her yesterday so I'm guessing the weekend would be the right time. We still need to have a proper chat about it all as last night was all about her finding out if I still wanted to take her on.....................which was a big YES from me. Over this next few days we will be discussing the arrangement etc. As for knowing that she will be truly mine, not sure on that for a while as I'll still feel as if the owners might turn up in the near future to claim her back. Although legally I wouldn't have to return her, if they could prove she was their bird & were genuine people then I would no doubt hand her back, & hoping somebody would do the same for me & Murphy he he was ever found in somebody's care. I'd imagine after 12 months or so the trail will be cold & then maybe she would be mine for sure.
-
Well today we are discussing the arrangements regarding he grey coming to me, so should know something a little later. I'm quite surprised that they haven't found the owners as the lady looking after the grey has plastered it all over the net, forums, lost & found, parrot alert, RSPCA, John Haywood etc pretty much all the things I have done to try & find Murphy & that's how I found this one because of her hard work. They also managed to get it out on the radio but still nothing at all. She also works at a vets & has gave all over vets in the area the info & spread the word. So at least we know that she tried her hardest to find the owners.
-
Well I'm not going to get too excited just yet, not until I have her here with me. I have been doing some research on the legality of lost birds/pets etc & it seem in the UK they are subject to the 28 days rule. If nobody has come forward in 28 days, providing the finder does their utmost to find the owner then they legally pass on to the finder after 28 days, who then becomes the legal owner. At which time they can then legally sell/foster or re-home the bird with whoever they see fit, in this case me. A few more days to go yet, so we shall see what happens.
-
Well I believe she is a vet where the bird was taken too but never really been in this position before. Not quite sure what authorities you would contact though to be honest, she just mentioned the she needed to legally keep the grey for 4 weeks before she could re-home.
