  1. I work full time. I got Morgan a larger cage (28 x 42inches), so he has plenty of playspace when I'm at work. I work long hours, so Morgan usually gets out probably 5 days a week. On weekends, he gets a lot more time out than weekdays. I try to put him to bed between 8- 9pm, because he is up between 6 and 7am. I really want him to get 10-11 hours sleep. I find if he only gets 9 hours, he can be kinda cranky.... He is literally like having a child in the house. He needs and wants my attention. I think it's a great idea to adopt your bird while you're on vacation. Remember, the patterns you set are the ones your bird will learn to expect. As an aside, if Morgan is out more than 2 hours, he often goes back to his cage on his own. Sometimes when I open the cage, he doesn't come out for 5-10 minutes. He is therefore not "begging" to get out of the cage, though I think it's best for him to fly daily, if possible, just for the exercise. He really loves his cage. So I don't feel like it is "punishment" that he's not out more. I suggest you focus on making your bird's cage a wonderfully safe and fun home. It will be his "kingdom" and safe haven that he will enjoy while you're away.
  2. I also understand the seed catchers are a danger to dogs' eyes. I never attached mine. Instead, I have vinyl carpet runners underneath the cage. The runners are easy to pick up/wash.
  3. I joined four months before I got Morgan. I am here to learn. Maybe one day, I'll have enough experience where I can help other people as well. I have learned so much from the members here. Books are good, but when I have a specific question, sometimes the answer is just not there. I have relied heavily on folks' experience on this board. I SOOOOOOO appreciate this board!!!
  4. That is really amazing. If I have to move Morgan's cage while he's in it, I say in a calm voice, "It's OK." The other day, I sorta bumped him, and said, "Sorry, Morgan, I didn't mean to bump you." And he said, "It's OK." I was not moving the cage at the time!!! Now I wonder if he has put together what "It's OK" might mean, or if he was just babbling. He's now almost 9 months old, so I don't expect him to understand all that much, but maybe he does!!! Great story, Dan!
  5. Congratulations! They are beautiful!!
  6. Awwwwwwwwwww!!! Lucky me! I went to the nursery cam just as you were feeding them!! How sweet!!! Thanks for sharing!!
  7. Yes, once he got the glasses, he flew them up to a beam in the house that is about 10 feet high, and inspected them. Then he lost interest and flew to another beam...leaving me to fetch them. At least he didn't leave them on the beam that is about 20 feet high!!
  8. So Morgan decided to sit on my head. For the first time ever, he leans forward and kind of nipped at my forehead. It didn't hurt, and I didn't pay much attention as I thought he was just playing around. Then in a flash, he lifted my glasses at the nosepiece a flew off to a beam with them!!! I think we're entering the "brat" stage!!!
  9. I dunno the answer to your question, but Joey sure is cute!!!
  10. I left mine out about 9-10 days, then froze them. They did not turn orange in that length of time. Of the three I left out 2+ weeks, one turned orangish in color. The other two withered. I've decided not to give these to Morgan. I gave him 3 green ones when they first were delivered, but he never touched them, so I don't see that it's any big loss to him.
  11. Thanks, Dave. Once again, you are so helpful!
  12. Now that the summer months are coming, I wonder how much heat is tolerable to a CAG? I know they're from Africa, but they also get to fly there, and there may well be a breeze to keep things comfortable. While I'm at work, Morgan is in his cage. Can he take up to 90 degrees in the house (ie with no breeze)? Should I set up some sort of a fan? Would an ocillating fan, say 20 feet away, be helpful? Gosh, I can't believe how I worry about him. I expect my dogs to just deal with things, but how I worry about Morgan!
  13. Congrats, Joey!!! You're doing well!!!
  14. Thanks so much. Guess it's time to get some more pellets!!! I won't buy the 25lb bag this time....newbie mistake!!
  15. Yeah, that's the problem. I put all the pellets in plastic containers, and threw away the bag. That was in December. I have used less than half of those pellets so far, and wonder when they are no longer good. Thanks for your thoughts.
  16. Just wondering how long pellets can be stored in a dry, sealed container before they would be considered stale? Thanks!
  17. I kept three of these palm nuts on my counter for more than a week. (I froze the rest earlier--which has probably ruined them, as they were still green. I froze them as they looked like they were starting to wither.) Anyway, one of the nuts on the counter turned slightly orange, and the other two just "withered" and stayed green. Any thoughts on how to get these things to ripen? Thanks!
  18. Oh, I'm so sorry. It's so hard to lose a pet. My condolences to you.
  19. How about we post our birds' favorite toys? Might be helpful for all (us) newbies who are trying desperately hard to spoil our babies wildly!! Here's are my 8 month old's favorite toys: Stainless steel cage filled with blocks and (blank/no ink) newspaper. He loves to shred the paper! http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=10258 Birdie Bagels- again, he loves to shred paper! http://birdsjustwannahavefun.com/bagels.htm Indestructibell- he likes to wrestle with this http://www.mybirdstore.com/LUCKY_BIRD-LUCKY_BIRD_INDESTRUCTIBELL_LARGE.html Stainless steel tubular bell- he likes to make lots of noise! ;-) http://www.mybirdstore.com/WHAT_S_NEW_EXCITING-STAINLESS_STEEL_BELL_MEDIUM.html Goofy links- his favorite perch. For some reason, he loves acrylic. Maybe it's the bright colors? https://www.petsolutions.com/Default.aspx?ItemID=28760501
  20. And Joey says, "Thank you for making my dream come true. I wanted you and needed you, but I didn't ever think I would have you. Now I do. There are no words, coos or clucks to express how truly grateful I am for your tender care. Love you Mommy and Daddy!!"
  21. I love the photo with Biscotti begging for petting. How cute!!!!

    Palm Nuts!

I just ordered some, too. Do you let them ripen before you freeze them? Thanks for the info.
  23. Hope you've had a Happy Birthday today, Yoshi!!!
  24. After listening to Emma's sweet chatter, I was reminded of this story: My brother has a CAG named Luke. One week, my brother was going out of town, so he asked my mom to come over and feed/care for Luke. So my mom walks in the house, and hears in a man's voice, "Wassup?" She called the police. Well, you can guess the rest. They came out laughing, that Luke was the culprit. "But is sounded so real!" said my mom. Oh, and Luke was released on his own recognizance.
