Congrats, Dan, and thanks for all your help and time!!!{Nature-00020095}

here'swhat I found googling. There are pictures there: http://www.exoticpetvet.net/ You need to go to Avian (top of page) then scroll down on the left hand side to "Vet to Vet" there about 1/2 way down this list you will see "Visual sexing african greys". For all of you either having or wishing to get a Grey might be interested in the above article. This is NOT a 100% fact, the only way to get that is DNA sexing.

Awww, how sweet. It's amazing how smart these greys are. She wants to please you!!! And is sorry she didn't!! I bet she learned a lesson from this: "Sometimes mom says "no" but sometimes it's a big "No!" That must be really important." What a sweet bird you have there!

CONGRATS!!! Souns like a wonderful beginning!!

I found some pine nuts at a local store and they charge $30 a pound!!!{Emotions-00020070} Thankfully, Morgan doesn't like them a lot. I bought about 1/2 cup and it was nearly $9! Ugh.

In the US, we have a rental/moving store called UHaul. I buy their newpaper packing paper. It is newspaper without the ink/print. I pay about $9 for 140 sheets, and use 2 sheets a day (big cage.) It's actually cheaper than buying a newpaper, and I prefer to get my news online anyway.

This is defintely the best news for this dear, sweet bird. Yay!!!:cheer:

Thank you for your thoughts. I realize that there is such a thing as too much Vit D, and too much calcium. I also know that most people in my part of the US are low in Vit D and thus must supplement, so I wonder if this applies to my pets as well--I assume it does. Morgan likes the Pretty Bird, and my brother has used it for his birds (he breeds Greys--and is Morgan's breeder) for quite a long time, with no problems. I just see that so many are using either Roudybush or Harrison's, I thought I would check. Morgan also gets a few seeds, and lots of fruits and veggies. I'm careful with the seeds, as I understand there is not a lot of nutritional value in them--though Morgan loves them!

I am currently feeding Morgan the Pretty Bird brand pellet called African Special. It is supposedly made especially for african greys and with extra calcium. Is this a respected pellet brand? When I look at the Roudybush, they say to mix 2/3 of their maintenance pellet with 1/3 of their high energy breeder for an African Grey. Is that what you do? What does Harrison's do to provide the necessary calcium? Are you supplementing this pellet? Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Without using the word "neglected", I would tell the lady what the vet said about the bird's health. For example, he was eating the wrong diet, needed more excerise, or more attention, etc. I would empathize with her about how much commitment this takes, and then tell her that you (or Kate) love and own several birds, and would be happy to accept this bird into your flock. Does she actually love and want this bird, or is she doing this out of a sense of obligation to her sister? If she loves the bird, surely she wants it to be healthy-whether or not she likes/appreciates vets. Maybe she can't afford proper healthcare for the bird, and would appreciate someone else adopting it. Giving the bird to your partner would be keeping it in the family.

Just curious-- how old is Pepper?

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. So sweet! That's exciting!! I'm trying to teach my 7 month old to announce when I'm home. So far, he just says his name, and babbles a lot. Must be fun to start hearing more words, especially your name!!

Thankfully, Morgan hasn't gone up to the highest beam for several days now. I have removed the lower track lights. I'm really hoping that he will just lose interest in the lights, as I really want him to fly. I do still say "no" to him when necessary, but I'm not convinced that he understands it yet. He was soooooo cute yesterday. I have a game where he has to put the colored chip on the right peg, and he did it!!! I got so excited, so he did it again!!! Now I'm not sure he knew what he was doing, but he knew that I liked it. So very cute!!

Now THIS is VERY COOL!!!! Thanks for posting!!!!:cheer:

Check out this thread, and see if it helps: http://greyttimes.com/?p=68#more-68 I'm no expert...just learning all of this myself. But it says a lot about beans and their proper preparation (you have to soak them to rid them of an enzyme.)

Thanks, everyone. Here are a few more details. My living room has a cathedral ceiling. It is a barn-style home with 4x8 beams spanning at 1 story up and 2 stories up. There is track lighting on those beams. Morgan likes to fly up to a beam, then reach over and chew on the cord to a track light. I really can't cover those cords--they are about 2" long and run from the base of the fixture to the part that holds the lamp. And I can't get to Morgan, because he's so high up. Do you think this means I will have to get him clipped? If I clip him, and then let his flight feathers grow back in, do you think those few intervening months would give me enough time to train him to be more cooperative? I really want Morgan to fly, but I sure don't want him electrocuted!!! :ohmy: Thanks for your thoughts.

When training your CAG, what do you use for a treat?
-
That guy certainly knows how to lose lots of business, fast. Sorry for your bad experience with him. It looks like Emma is in an Adventure Pack. Or has he now changed the picture?
-
I read that saying "no" to my bird will only reinforce a behavior. So how do I teach Morgan to not chew on electrical cords? I've picked up all the lamps that I can--just to remove the temptation. But I need a few lights in the house! Morgan is a 7 month old CAG. Thanks!

LOL. How adorable!!! At least from this side, listening in!! {Nature-00020095}

Please update us. Thinking of you and hope you find your grey soon.

He is so sweet, and has given you his most special gift.... Now YOU are the one getting treats!!!

Morgan will be 7 months old in a few days. In the past 2 days, I have found a bizillion (OK, maybe 30) white, downy feathers in his cage. This is a lot more than usual. Is this OK? Could he be molting? Thanks for your thoughts!

LOL!!!! Congrats, Elvenking...I think!?{Nature-00020095}
