YOUR WELCOME! caitb2007, I go to a health food store and buy organic grains, I also get her nuts there and the beans/peas for sprouting. Yeah it makes a lot but it goes right into the freezer! SO it keeps until you use it up. I freeze only enough for a couple days. Take out as needed. (I also have other birdies that like to pick out what they like) I also give her Bobbies Birdie bread, and fresh fruit and cooked veggies like Yam, Sweet potato and cook her an egg once a week. She likes oatmeal and of course her nuts. So many things to try out! Lovethatgrey, You are SO right about the corn! Dalia loves it! In fact we had corn on the cob tonite, she almost flew into my plate before I could cool off a piece for her. I would love to see some other recipes if anyone has any.

Here is a recipe I make for Dalia... Beans, Grains, Pasta, Veggie Mix, By Bobbi Brinker Approximately 20 ounces or 567 grams package of mixed beans and peas Several Different kinds of grains 1 Cup of small pasta Small package of frozen sweet corn kernals or mixed veggies. Wash beans and peas in a large heavy pot. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, cover and let sit for one hour. Bring back to a boil, uncovered, and simmer for 40 minutes. Stir Frequently. Drain Beans and cool Add several rooughly chopped hot peppers or dried hot pepper pods to the cooking water of the beans and to the pasta water. Cook all grains in seperate pots so there are many flavors. Combine the ingredients. Freeze in plastic freezer bags in 2-3 day portions. OPTIONAL ADDITIONS TO THE MIX: Chopped nuts Frozen sweet green peas Chopped dried fruit Toasted unsalted sunflower kernals Boiled popcorn kernals Here are some pictures of the grains:4 Grains, Pearled barley, Bulgar, Quinoa, BuckwheatGroats, Pasta Frozen Mixed Veggies: Beans, peas and lentils mix: Finished result: Boiled popcorn kernals: Place one pound of popcorn kernals in a large heavy pot. Cover kernals with water, bring to a boil, lower heat, and simmer until kernals are soft. Add water as neded to cover popcorn kernals. Drain cool and add to beans mix or package in 2-3 day servings and freeze. Dalia really likes this mix. Cristen

I just need some advice on wether or not I can safely allow my fids to chew newspaper/flyers. Some have said that it is ok but, I would REALLY appreciate more opinions. My birds are drawn to it, and seem to want to shred it to bits, they dont eat it but I worry about it? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP GUYS...

CONGRATULATIONS! A new puppy how exciting! My mother had one when she was a young girl, she told me his name was Duke and he would walk her to school (far) and would go back home and then would be waiting outside her school when she came out at the last bell!! I thought that was the cutest story! whata smart doggy!

Yes, I understand. But, I too work until 5pm everyday and I have to grab my son from daycare as well so I get home 5:15-5:30pm everyday.( sometimes later) As soon as I come in I say "HIPretty Girl" and Hi to all of my other fids and Dalia gets to come out ASAP. She is up btwn 6-7am every morning, and I know she sleeps/naps while we are away during the day. ( see her do this on wknds. ) I then have her out for most of the night putting her back in for moments when its unsafe to be out. I have a playstand in our living room that she perches on and she will sit there for a while, while I get some things done that need to be done around the house. I cuddle with her for about an hour a nite, then she starts yawning and usually is in bed in her cage btwn. 10-11pm. Weekends She is out most of the time. She never gives me problems with putting her back in her cage for bedtime. I tell her it's bedtime;time to go to sleep and kiss her goodnite and say I love you, your such a good girl. Of course those are the things she is now attempting to say! Cristen

Post edited by: myafricanqueen, at: 2009/06/12 23:38

If you are letting him out 3-4 nights a week, I would say that he needs more time out of his cage than that. ALL greys should get time out of the cage daily for a minimum of 4 hours per day. ( some say less ) He doesn't want to be in his cage becuase he has learned that it might be a long time before he gets out again. Can you imagine yourself locked up and not getting out for the WHOLE day? these birds are far too smart and need to keep busy as well as they need to flap and stretch their wings. When I take Dalia out of her cage after work the first things we do is FLAP FLAP! Which is I hold her feet one in each hand (gentle) and she FLAPS away to release that pent up energy! SHE LOVES IT. I am in no way trying to make you feel bad, obviously you care for your bird and just need a little advice. You came to the right place.

Awe. I think about you and Polly a lot. We are praying for you. Don't give up and don't lose hope. It has only been a day or so.

Too Funny ( well to me at least ) He just wants to go with you to work that all! lol Your boyfriend is a sucker and fell right into Ecko's Trap!! Im the same way, I have to make myself do what is right for Dalia sometimes. Dalia makes a noice and I swear she sounds like a puppy whining. Its so rediculous and I fall for it "sometimes" lol You will be fine and I Ecko will get better not to worry.

You are such a good person. Good JOB! Like Dan said try and get some pics....That would be awesome!:cheer:

When to attempt scratching Sam's head?
myafricanqueen replied to wbaradio's topic in The GREY Lounge
Yes I agree with Judy. Some greys will lower the head and "seem" like they want the pet and then bite in place of it... It sounds like maybe Sam had a prior bad experience and isn't sure about petting. But, with time and patience and once you learn his signals you should be fine. He will eventually trust you and allow you to pet. Good luck! I know you can do it. You obviously care enough or you wouldnt be on here! -
Awe Im glad to hear that Ecko is getting better. Dalia is placed in her cage many times during her out of cage time just to avoid that situation. She kind of started to act like that, she would run/climb all over the bars and duck down put her wings up a bit like she is about to fly into the bars! She would get LOUD and make many different noises to get my attention. Now she knows that when she is put in the cage she will soon come back out and that has calmed down that behaviour. Good Job with ECKO, you are a GreYt mama!
