YAY!! Congrats! I know it feels great to have a baby eat on their own. Ecko is almost weaned too! He has been off his formula for 3 days now and still not losing any weight. Its such a good feeling.

I would keep the pellets and seeds in his cage at all times. So there is always food available for him to eat if he gets hungry.

I just saw this on the news yesterday and thought it was really interesting. We found a baby mockingbird a couple weeks ago and we have been feeding it soft pellets because we couldn't find the nest and we couldn't just leave it there. This article made me think of the little baby and made me wonder if we let the mockingbird go in our back yard that maybe it would recognize us and come back to us. Who knows, but its interesting. Thanks for sharing.

So the breeder said they only handle the babies when they feed them? When they are young and still in the brooder then that is what they are suppose to do. But once they get older and put the babies in the cage I would hope they play with them more. I hope they don't just feed them and put them back in the cage. Babies do need sleep but they also need more interaction than just feeding time. You should ask them if they give them some play time out of their cage and ask if they cuddle them and introduce them to new things, like a harness or a spray bath (once they're fully feathered).

AWW Congrats on bringing Tuki home! Its normal if he is a little scared, its only been a couple of hours and it takes them weeks maybe even months to completely settle in. What do you mean he was plucking when you first put him in? Do you mean he was preening? Or actually plucking out his feathers? I'm sure he was preening himself since he is so young. Anyways I can't wait to see pictures, don't rush it though, I know he is scared.

Hello Bry and welcome to the forum! Good for you for doing your research first! These are amazing birds but they need a lot of love and attention. Did you want a baby grey or are you going to look for a rescue? I look forward to hearing more about you and your soon to be addition. Enjoy the site and don't hesitate to ask questions.

Hi from Nickel's New Mom *waves*
Eckobird replied to GrayGirl's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hello Mary and welcome to the forum! That is so nice of you to rehome an older grey. You are very lucky that Nickel bonded with you so quickly, some people aren't that lucky. I'm sorry to hear that she is plucking. I'm sure you can get her through this tough time. Just give her lots of love and out of cage time. So what did you do with the eggs? Anyways, enjoy the site and ask as many questions as you want. Thanks for sharing a picture of her, we love pictures! -
Yes very nice photos! It must be so cool to take your kitties and your grey with you.

HAhahahaha that is sooo funny! Misty is one smart boy with some at-ti-tuuude! lol  Thanks for sharing that made me laugh!

I'm pretty sure the birds you see outside with no harness are clipped, unless someone is willing to risk their bird flying away. The best thing is using a harness with a flighted bird. Some people are expert trainers and train there birds to free flight, but that takes A LOT of time and practice. I would never risk taking my bird outside without his harness. Even if you trust your bird will come back to you there could always be gust of wind to blow them away. Just like it happened to Tui. Have you heard Tui's story? If not look her up on youtube, type in Tui the african grey. Such a sad story!

Post edited by: caitb2007, at: 2009/05/19 18:03

What a great post Tina! Very interesting information, thanks for sharing your secret with us Carol! only 2 more days, :woohoo: ahhhh so exited!! I can totally relate to Jane about how she would check on her baby the first couple of days. I did the same thing. I was so excited to have him home finally and nervous at the same time. Everytime I heard him make a move in the cage I would rush to see if he was ok. Haha but my paranoia(sp?) got better. Its ok to be nervous Carol, but I know your going to do GREYT!!

So how is Cookie doing today? Did he gain any weight? Eating more foods?
-
Thanks Dan! Very helpful info. I learn something new everyday!

That is great that he likes the warm foods! I wouldn't worry too much about the seeds. Seeds are like junk food to them. The fruits and veggies are more important for him to eat because they are healthy! Have you tried giving him nuts? Pine nuts, pecans, walnuts, almonds, peanuts are my babys favorite! Especially pine nuts, he eats them soooo fast! You should make a pellet, seed, and nut mix for your baby. What kind of pellets have you tried giving to him? My baby likes the Zupreem fruity pellets. I mix those pellets with some seeds, and all the nuts I mentioned above. I also put dried fruit in that mix and he loves it.

Great picture! So still no luck in finding the owner? Are you going to keep him/her? What have you been calling him/her? lol Thanks for sharing

I'm pretty sure the palm oil would be good for all parrots. It's good for their beaks and feathers. My mom gives my senegal parrot red palm oil and she is going to start giving the little caique parrot some too. They love it. Especially Ecko, he loves palm oil and toast, he eats it all up! Its just my opinion, I'm no expert so don't listen to everything I say lol.

I think the Chex cereal would be ok. Like you said just make sure you don't give him the cereal with lots of sugar in it. My grey likes Golden grams but I don't give him too much of that because I know it has sugars. Why don't you introduce yourself in the Welcome and Introduction room and tell us more about you and your grey. His name, age, Congo or Timneh, how you got him and why? lol We love to hear about new grey owners.
