We haven't had Kenzie long enough to know if she can feel our emotions, but I'm sure we'll see one day. But I can say that our dogs are DEEPLY connected with us and they just know when we're down in the dumps. If I'm sad and just sitting on the couch with a tear rolling down my check, our shar-pei named Millie will jump on the couch and literally put her arms around my neck to give a hug, while pressing her face against mine. Then she tries to give kisses to make us feel better. We've had her since she was 8 weeks old and she will be 7 this year. I think a lot of domestic animals can sense what we're feeling.

Awe! Ours grey had pasta all over her beak today, aren't they cute when they're all messy with their food? I think so!
-
Ohhh she is very beautiful!

HAHAHAHA! Made me laugh just reading it! Too bad someone didn't get that recorded because that would have been hilarious to play for us on youtube!

I don't think I've ever heard Kenzie make a fart noise, but I have heard burping and nose blowing! lol

I have a Canon Rebel XTi, which is nice, but I need a macro lens to have more fun lol.

I've always hated guns. I frequently have horrible nightmares of getting shot to death. So I'd say I have a phobia of firearms lol. Casper- When you mentioned spiders...I thought of something I also hate as much as you hate spiders. They are those house centipedes (Scutigera coleoptrata). Look them up, they are disgusting!!! Ewww they give me the willies! Once in a blue moon I see one in the house and I freak out! Everytime you see one, they are running mad crazy up and down walls or across the floor. Yuck.
-
Sounds like that would be a great lesson, but I hope it doesn't freak any kids out so they become vegetarians! I had a similar experience when I was younger...and I haven't eaten chicken or meat since lol.

Our TAG falls in the range that Bernadette (BMustee) posted between 300-350. Kenzie is weighing in @ 313 grams now.

Yay for Tango and new cage! Kenzie has that same bright pink perch on the left to trim her beak and nails.

Gorgeous! What kind of camera do you use?

A member here named Erika (Baxtersmom) introduced me to a Whole Foods store. It's basically a really healthy and all organic grocery store. They have a seed and nut aisle where you can find all natural and organic safflower seeds of several different types.

Did you try parrot911.com ? It's a place where people post their lost or found parrots.

Can the people who didn't enter vote for a winner?! LOL I vote for Lyric in category 2!

I, also, named 36 in 5 minutes. I can definitely name more, but the time limit thing prevents you. Plus, some of the longer name countries I can give and pronounce correctly, but the game didn't recognize the spellings! So I'd be neat if it could recognize what you're trying to type. I was trying to type Zimbabwe as Zimbabway! lol

I know! It's so sad to see these birds all plucked and broken winged. If my bird hurt its self, especially a wing...I'd be freaking out and RUNNING to the vet! I guess the lady who had him up on craigslist fosters unwanted birds and places them into homes. Why she does it on craigslist, I don't know. She said a man turned him in because once the wing was broken, the bird freaked out and started plucking itself. I guess she wanted to try to find a home by the end of the day for him because another bird is coming in for fostering. She said she'll keep my number if any more quakers come through.
-
Never mind... I was in contact with the lady, but she said someone is coming to get him today. Looks like it wasn't meant to be.

I've always wanted a Quaker Parrot. There is just something about those chubby cheeks lol. Anyways, one just popped up on craigslist and I feel horrible for the little guy. Here is a picture: His right wing definitely looks broken and he is definitely a plucker. I'm contemplating "saving" this little dude. I know his feathers may never grow back, but I'd love to give it a good home with TLC. Ugh. I just don't know what to do.

Our rescue orders scales through http://www.birdscales.com/ Rick's Bird Supply in Wisconsin. They are good and ship quickly. The scale we use for our grey is the 2nd scale lists on their products page. It's a $69.99 digital bird scale with t-perch for small/medium parrots. It works in 1 gram increments or your can weigh in ounces. BELOW PICTURE IS FROM THEIR WEBSITE...IT'S NOT MY BIRD, but this is the scale that we have. It's recommended to weigh your bird at least once a week. You should weigh them first thing in the morning before they eat or drink, but AFTER the first big dump! lol We keep a weight log book so we can keep track of any sudden changes, in order to ensure she's not sick. The daily spritz is fine because it will keep the feathers in good condition and keep the dander down. Your bird doesn't need to get drenched, but sometimes it's fun! lol We used to just spritz our grey each day, until we saw her dunking her head in her water bowl! So then we filled a short big dish with some shallow water and put it on the kitchen floor. We showed it to her and she went crazy (in a good way!) and had a bunch of fun getting DRENCHED! It's not something she likes to do everyday, but more like only 1-2 times a week. The rest of the days we just spritz her. So you could try to introduce your bird to this method to try to make bath time a little more exciting. If you do, I recommend the kitchen floor so you can easily clean up the water that has splashed everywhere...

Post edited by: Goralka08, at: 2009/01/13 21:53

Compact fluorescent bulbs doesn't easily break compared to regular light bulbs with thinner glass. We use fluorescents in the house to save money and it's an added bonus because they're brighter. Before we got our grey, I accidentally dropped one on the floor in our house and it didn't break at all, we as a regular bulb would have definitely broke. When the light bulb burns out, you cannot throw it in the trash, as you stated. But you can find places to dispose of them. Last time we were in our local Home Depot we saw a sign saying that they dispose of fluorescent lights. I'm just saying that for personal experience with dropping 2 in the same room, that the CFL didn't break. Fluorescent bulbs have been getting a bad reputation, but check out this chart: It looks like regular incandescent light bulbs actually release more mercury when burnt by coal in land fills.

Everyone recommends Harrison's because it's completely organic bird food...that is why it's so expensive. To save money, we feed Roudybush African Grey pellets and buy Harrison's treats like their bird bread. We did the math for Harrison's pellets and for the price of one container of Harrison's, we get double the amount of Roudybush pellets for the same price. So with the saved money, we can buy more toys for her. Both brands are good, though.

Phew! Thank God that she didn't need surgery! Now the pain can be over and she can enjoy all the food and drinks she wants! Thanks for updating us all. I was really hoping she didn't need surgery because my own mom has had her stomach sliced open from breast bone to belly a total of 7 times and it's horrible pain and recovery. Nobody should have to go through it.

Looking for a good breeder in MI
Goralka08 replied to zookeeper's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hello and welcome! I'm from Michigan and live in the Southeastern thumb region. Sorry I can't help ya with breeders because we rescued ours from a parrot place in Ohio. Good luck and let us know how it goes with the breeder and finding a baby! -
Nope. Never heard of them before.
