Bird Name

I always found in naming a animal that if I took the time after I got them home, pretty soon a name will fall in place. my dog name is Snoopy. and it fits, he is always snooping into stuff. my bird name is Charlie, had it when I got him and he knew it so I didnt want to change it. How about Unique for a name. it would be unique.

Avian Game

The Bee Hummingbird, it is only 2 inches. Why should you never hold a bird around the chest area?
6. i ate ice chips the last time i had to take it... i feel for u. it is wicked stuff.
7. my phobia is mice, rats, hambsters, gerbels.. anything along that line... I know it is unrealistic, but I cant help it... I have had people scare me with fake mice, trying to be funny, and they say I turn so white. I scare them cause they think I am going to pass out. I cant even scream. after a few minutes i can come to reality. Thank God our house seems to be mice proof, as I have been in it for ten yrs and never seen a mouse. My H keeps mice poisen in the celler but it has never even shown signs of being eaten. I wouldnt even watch the movie mouse trap by disney... didnt want no part of it. made the kids watch it at their dads. I really think it comes from watching the movie Ben and Willard when I was little. 7 yrs old and we had rats in the house i was leaving in at the time.
8. He is so cute... Welcome to the world Murphy... congratulations on your new addition.
9. exactly what do the greys do with the legos. I have a large size set for the grandkids. I am sure I can take some out of it and they would never notice..... guess I will see what charlie does with them. I got him army men to play with last week. so I will wait for another week before introducing the legos.. He gets bored so I alternate the toys... I love reading threads for different ideals,, especially since charlie seems to love foot toys so much. doesnt want anything to do with the store part toys I have boughten him... I did buy a small hanging toy for a small bird that was just right for him to hold in his foot and play with but it only lasted a couple days... I saved the parts, along with other toy parts to make toys with.
10. It looks like a nice one in the making. I started making that one, but havent gotten around to finishing it. Need to get busy myself.
11. What kind of rawhide bones do you use for birds? I have heard of this but haven't bought any as all I have seen is the ones for dogs and didn't know if there was ones made especially for birds or if the dog ones are safe for birds.
12. Charlie likes foot toys mostly. I just lay them on the corner of his play stand and curiosity usually get the better of it. Funny though he will usually attach it first couple of times he touches it and throw it off the cage. Then I leave it lay for awhile pick it back up and lay it back in the corner. before long he is playing with it, after he figures out it isnt going to hurt him... You should have seen him attack the thermostat cover we put on it. He does have a big toy with wooden beads strings and leather, store bought. hanging on the outside of his cage and has nothing to do with it. but I can pull the leather stripes out and tie them into a knot and he will play with it for a long time. beats me. I think the big toys sometimes are too intimidating, especially for a younger bird.. maybe starting with small toys will help.

Post edited by: rierie, at: 2009/01/04 23:39

biting

Thank you all for your incite.. maybe I am expecting too much. It just seemed that charlie was so friendly at first. As for my son, he isnt normally home much. And I have told him not to mess with charlie as he doesnt seem to like him much. And I also told him he isnt a dog. Travis is too demanding for charlie to understand, somewhat of a bully type personality. (army) The hot potatoe game I was referring too was in Sally blanchards book, and it hasnt worked so I only tried it the once. It is not throwing him like a hot potatoe but passing him from person to person getting him to climb up on their finger. When the house gets busy, I have been just closing up his cage so that he is safe. I guess I was just so confused as he just started nipping. He was so friendly when he came home. I knew he would get not so friendly but I was not expecting it so early. I was afraid it was something I was doing wrong to encourage the behavior. which I guess it is. i reckon for his and others safety I will not let no one pick him up no more except me , my husband and my daughter, and my nephew. He likes him too. I will tell people not to touch him as he doesnt like it. most of the time he seems content to perch on his cage or in it. At least once a day I bring him to the living room on his playstand and he will climb up and walk around on me and/or my husband. thank you all
20. wow that is so cool, i think i will copy the pic and take it to a handyman carpenter i know in town and see what he would charge to build one.

biting

Charlie is starting to bite. I dont know why. It is like he is saying leave me alone. He seems to be picking men out mostly. but has nipped at me a few times when trying to get him up on my finger after him biting someone else.. When he does it to someone I try to pick him up and tell him no, but sometimes he just wont get up. just nips at me. I usually leave him alone when he actts like this and try again latter. I practice getting up everyday. When he does get up I look at him sternly and tell him no biting and that I am the boss. he then dunks he head like a little kid that has gotten in trouble or like when he wants his neck petted looking at me out of the corner of his eye. The other day I tried to get him to play hot potato game with my daughter and her boyfreind, but he wouldnt go to the boyfriend at all. And just keep trying to bite him every time he tried to take him.The boyfiend was getting scared and I could tell charlie wasnt going to let him take him. My son isnt scared of him but he tries to demand that charlie behave and that doesnt work with birds. It is really like he knows who is scared of him and is using it to the fullest to scare them into leaving him alone and it is working. It is getting where no one wants to touch him but me and my husband and I really wanted him to be more social as we have eight grown children and 14 grand kids and I didnt want to have to worry that he would bite. I have been teaching the grand kids how to handle him without hurting him. He loves playhing with my 11 yr old grandson, but he hasnt been around for a couple weeks. my husband has no problem with him to much either. never bites my daughter, yet.. but any other man that tries is going to get it.
