5. oh my I think I am just getting started from the sounds of it.... Charlie likes the trim on the wall... but since I moved his cage he hasnt bothered it no more... But this morning, when I eat and am done, I always leave some food on the plate and sit it in the floor for the dog, well I gave it to him, charlie climbed off his cage, I was talking to my husband, knew charlie was on the floor but wasnt paying attention, yep charlie went to check out what snoopy was doing.... bark, screaming and I looked down and snoopy was standing his ground... charlie had beaked at the plate.... I yelled at snoopy picked charlie up and told him.... be careful snoopy will have parrot stew for dinner... poor charlie just looked at me like what did I do.... I told snoopy bad dog and he just looked at me like he is trying to take my food... gotta watch those dogs...
6. that is so sad... thank you for being there for this bird.. obviously he needed someone to stand up for him.. hugs
7. charlie is noisey morst of the time... always getting into stuff and wanting attention.. he has his quiet times though too. He doesnt like being by himself too much.. wants to be where we are.. and chirps at us a lot.. only says words when he is on his cage and we are in the other room... then he chats away.. then when he is done chatting he comes into the living room with us... then when he has been there for a while... my husband puts him back on the floor and tells him to go back to his cage with a stern voice and charlie usually does it.. not that he wont turn around and come back if he decides too... he pretty much does what he wants.
8. That is s cute vidio... thanks.... I noticed your playstand... we have been looking at playstands to build one for charlie... I noticed the round bottom... how do you do that? I was thinking of using a table top that would be easier to clean off.. cause I want to put it in the living room where there is carpet...
9. That would be cute,,, but if you run late you might get into some trouble..... lol

dry skin

Yes he closes his eyes some and you think he is sleeping until you stop and then he nudges me with his beak to continue. Maybe not big flakes, but dusting, but his skin looks flaky. I will get some of the red palm oil to add to his diet. I have read about it before.. no he isnt preening more then he has since he came... And for the bath... about once a week he seems to be bathing in his bird bath... I put fresh water in it daily and have been leaving it in his cage.. Ive tried the running water in a sink and am still working on it but he doesnt take to it well... at first when I put him in the sink he just screammed to be gotten out. now he is drinking the running water but no bath yet... I only put him in it when I am there to watch him... I have debated about whether to force bath him as some say they have some kind of preening stuff themselves so I havent presisted in getting him wet no more... did a couple of times and he really hates it, spraying, letting slow water run on to him... he fights it and i was afraid I was in for a mega bite if I presisted when he got older. I will try the red palm oil as soon as I can find it... good old walmart hopefully. Thanks lisa

dry skin

Charlie lets me scratch his head and neck.. but here lately more then usually.. maybe because he is getting more trusting as we have now had him since first of Dec. but it seems to me as his skin is dry and flaky.... when I scratch it it flakes... and seems rough at first and the more I scratch at it the softer his feathers seem to become... I just dont know if it is normal. Not having another bird that I could touch before I am not sure. But he seems to like the scratching, but I feel like the monkeys at the zoo who are picking at each other. He has become so intense and insistent with it. lays his head on my chest or lap and closes his eyes he likes it so much. like he is relaxing... and wants me to do it for a long time....about 20 min and I quit but he would like more. It is winter here which means furnace heat.. we keep pans of water on the heater vents to help keep moisture in the air.... But could Charlies skin be too dry and what can I do about it?
12. yep, they eat the insides and spit out the shell. at least mine does
13. Charlie does something similiar, like he is trying to throw up... I knew it was a sign of affection, and that as he matures he will more than likely actually regurgitate. But what other things will he do?
14. i was told by several people that greys are really smart.but he is really surprising me ever day. My husband is a little on the laid back side, and i work part time so he plays with charlie while I am at work most days... Charlie gets off his cage and walks into the living room where he sits all the time, even when I am home. I put a ladder to it because i was afraid he is going to hurt himself flying off. But anyway, my husband has taught him to go back to his cage, so cute. He puts him back down on the floor and tells him to go back to his cage and charlie does... His cage is about 13to 14 feet from the recliner. I was so surprised when he started doing this. And tonight the dog brought Charlie a toy. so funny. I gave charlie a little stuffed animal while he was sitting on the arm of my chair. You know those ones that everyone was collecting for awhile. I cant remember what they are called...anyway Charlie dropped it and snoopy picked it up off the floor and gave it back to charlie. I was shocked as it was really snoopys toy in the first place. Snoopy plays fetch with all his toys. But to bring it back to charlie.. I think he wanted to play with him. I can see a future of charlie dropping the toys and snoopy fetching them. They tongue each other too.. How does your dog get along with your grey?
15. I cant imagine, I have had my grey only for a couple months. And he is a permanent part of this family.
16. Well, I am now a member of he peaked a hole in the wall club. Well, Charlie had been attacking the thermostat and since it was really the best place for his cage, we attached a plastic cover over the thermostat a few weeks back. It is about three to four inches from his cage. Well He would climb on top of the cover and sit. We tried to distract him and would move him ever time he got up there. Charlie spends most of his time outside his cage. I let him out in the morning, fresh food and water, then my husband puts him back up before he goes to get coffee. Then when he comes back home he is allowed out again. Well this afternoon I got home from work, no problem, a little later looked in on charlie cause he was being awful quiet. yeap he was peaking on the border trim.. looks as if he has done it before too.... I told him bad bird, no.. and put him back.. he seems determined to get back on it too.... How do you distract them from chewing things they shouldnt? He wants to chew up everything he can get ahold of. He has all kinds of stuff to tear up. toilet paper roll, wood, plastic bottle caps, all kinds of baby toys, tree sticks inside his cage, I give him whole pecans we get from the city park... leather straps from the pet shop and a long hanging thing made from rope boughten at the pet shop. And he chews on his playstand. Is nothing mine anymore... my house belongs to a grey... and he thinks he can eat it....lol I even started giving him chicken bones, but he wants no part of them. 17. Yeah but men love waiting on a women. It is worth the wait.
18. I have the concrete perch by his water, and I put a sheet of gravel paper in the bottom of the cage, but it wasnt working. The last time the got sharp, i threw the paper in the bottom and it done the trick, after a few days I removed it. But he has mmoved up a higher in his cage and not on the bottom as much. I have a sand perch I picked up by accident thinking it was concrete. But I never put it in the cage as it said it was for cockatiels. Do you all think it will help? I dont want charlie to have to go threw this again, but his nails was getting sharp, he wasnt scratching me, but digging in from holding on..
19. My dog runs with charlies toys, every chance he gets.. if charlie drops one snoopy gets it and runs and hides, chews it up if I dont get it. When we bring charlie in the living rooom with us. And Charlie has a toy, snoopy sneaks up trying to take it from him. I tell him that is charlies toy leave him alone and he will go lay down and just watch until he drops it and then snatch it if I dont get it first. Other then that if Charlie flies off his catch, snoopy goes over sniffs at him. and then goes like oh it is only the bird and goes about his own way. If charlie is on my lap or hands Snoopy will walk up to him and will lick at charlies beak and Charlie licks back... until snoopy gets excited and then charlie will dart at him. at that point I have always told snoopy to leave charlie alone. Snooopy will even walk up to the door of the cage, hanging down with charlie on it and sniff at him. At this point I dont think Snoopy would intentionally hurt charlie at this point, but being a jack russel/chuachuawa mix he gets excited wanting to play with charlie and doesnt understand that charlie cant play like he does.. Therefore they are always supervised. Even yesterday when we clipped charlies toenail to short, u could see snoopy was concerned, he keep trying to see what was going on.
20. She is so cute, I love the color of her....
21. bob feels so bad, he says charlie moved on him.. i have the concreke perch and I put some that sandpaper stuff in his cage by his food, but it wasnt helping.. he just keep chewing it up.... I know the next time he will go to vet.. He is still just sitting on his cage.

Post edited by: rierie, at: 2009/01/23 01:46
22. Well Charlies toenails was beginning to dig into my fingers.. So I looked up how to cut his toenails, and thought ok.. I have trimmed dogs, cats, kids, babies. My husband and I can do this. I gave my husband the clippers. and he said no he wanted to use the dog clippers. ok no problem, I sterilized them in bleach and then alcohol. And we preceded to trim charlies toenails. I toweled him with no problem really snuggled him to my chest and got a foot out. My husband clipped. not bad except he trimmed one too short. It preceded to bleed and bleed. I put cornstarch and flour and it still wouldnt stop bleeding.. tied a couple times with no success, so I then cauterized it with a hot knife. still bleeding, and I am thinking oh what am I going to do now.. So I put more cornstarch and flour on it. while telling bob I think we are going to have to take him to the vet. but Thank goodness the second treament of cornstach seems to be working. it hasnt been bleeding for about fifteen minutes now. Even though I was the one toweling him, and then after the damage was done, had to retowel. and treat him. I was thinking oh my, when this is all over he wont want nothing to do with me. But it is Bob he is scared of. all bob did was trim the first two nails. I had to do all the rest after the damage was done. Go figure.... i then toweled him and finished the other foot myself. He is now sitting on top his cage and just sitting there all traumatized. I feel so bad. I know I have to watch his foot for any infection now too. any suggestions are more then welcome...

Post edited by: rierie, at: 2009/01/23 01:40
