  1. Schroeder seems to be uninterested in talking, so he mainly uses print media to advertise. Thanks for the input. Our bathroom is very tiny and there wouldnt be a way to safely add a small prto-oheater to the bathroom (which is why we stuck the red bulb in the cieling). I am glad that the heat bulb for 15 min a day wont kill him straight off, I guess I have some time to research the idea. I will indicate to Schroeder that other birds have managed to answer the phone and that his next bonus will depend on him mastering these basic skills. Honestly, I think he thinks he runs the place. He even quit early today to go play with his toys. Ugh
  2. Thanks, i will be sure to get mine in time for Schroeder to unwrap at christmas
  3. Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!! You are too far away to give a pat on the back, and too far to shake your hand.....but karma to you for your great feat! Can't wait for post 2000
  4. Check the corrd often and do not leave it running while you aren't home. If it has a bad enough crack/fracture, the thing could blow up, if it runs out of moisture because you get delayed or the lid doesnt form a tight seal, it might smoke.....and if it old, worn out/has cord damage, it may cause a fire. I may be a bit sensitive because I hear a lot of horror astories in my line of work, but I would never leave anything that involvs heat on when you aren't home to supervise. If you are concerned about time (most people like crock pots because they can handle slow cooking meals)I have heard that if you seal the top of the pot with foil before putting the lid on, it cuts the cooking time down by about half. i can't verify the correctness of this though, as the only things I make are reservations and delivery orders.
  5. The front of the condo is very warm, but the back is freezing cold during the winter. We recently installed a red heat bulb in there, and I would like to use it this winter to keep the bathroom warm while Schroeder and I are getting ready to go to work (Yes, we work together, stop laughing. Yes, he has his own desk, fake laptop and fake phone....his message taking skills arent great yet, but he doesn't mouth off to clients, works for peanuts and keeps spirits up so stop laughing). Does anyone know anything about the effect of the red light on greys' eyes? I know they see things a bit differently than we do. It didnt seem to bother him much today when I tried it out, but if it going to cause long term harm, I wont use it when he's in there with me.... Any thoughts? (This is important. He is my V.P. of marketing and public relations, I can't have him taking sick time off for a headache or filing a worker's comp claim due to blindness.)
  6. most birds will give off warning signs when they are about to bite. Pay close attention and you will learn to recognize them. I'd keep your bird off of your shoulder till such time as he has earned your trust and you know he wont bite. Also, birds don't bite for no reason, there are a ton of reasons for biting. As you get to know him, you will learn what he likes, dislikes, bite triggers and that occasionally what may seem like a bite is really your bird trying to play with you. Be patient and observant and you will find the bites getting fewer and fewer. When I got Schroeder, I was careful to let him play with my fingers in his mouth. When he got a little too firm, I told him to be nice over and over. Now when he is being a bit too "playful" I can tell him to be nice and he calms down and stops nipping in a painful way. By letting your bird see that you are not afraid of his beak you are also sending a message that biting you isnt impressing of scaring you and that there is no point to it. If you are trying to do something like pick your bird up or some other specific activity, and he is hell bent on biting, you can distract him and he may forget about his bitey mission. Again, that is one of those things where you really have to get to know your bird to see what you can get away with.
  7. You only sleep 2 hours a day, and are bored with all of your extra free time because people don't post often enough on greyfroums for you to be entertained all night......and your fids are sleeping... I wish I could fly around with Schroeder
  8. A friend of mine has an amazon that was saying all sorts of x rated things, and he blamed his wife and was about ready to divorce her. Then Booger (yeah thats his name, he is green and yellow) accused him of throwing someone in the river.... right about then he started believing his wife's explanation that little Booger had been repeating things from her day time soaps. On another note, the guy should have kept his grey; his bird was only lookin out. It would have been good to know if future girlfriends were cheating as well...
  9. My fav love song is "Shh" by Frou Frou, the lyrics are hard to follow, but if you listen to it you'll understand why its a great love song. It it also happens to be the song that was playing when I realized I was in love with my husband... Sunbeam, stop tugging me Pull that door shut quietly Darling, what are you doing? We don't have time for this Mmm dey mmm da mmm daaeeoo Mmm dey mmm da mmm daaeeoo Crazy mother you then Give me an hour and I'll give you your dreams... Don't make a sound Shh and listen Keep your head down We're not safe yet Don't make a sound And be good for me 'Cause I know the way to somewhere out here Leave it I won't go back We have to do it 'cause it's not been left here Don't care what do they know I've seen them, baby, and I know it's real Sure, in time, I knew they'd come Oh, are we having fun or what? Yeah... Don't make a sound Shh and listen Keep your head down We're not safe yet Don't make a sound And be good for me 'Cause I know the way to somewhere out here I feel good all over I feel good all over I feel good all over Even inside out...
  10. The Mickaboo rescue in san francisco is a WONDERFUL organization, you can see them at mickaboo.com they are like a rescue broker and organice the fostering care among several well qualified families the Lily Sanctuary in Fountain Valley is also good to their birds, but there are A LOT of birds there and I dont know if they get much 1 on 1 time. but the parrots all get a good deal of out door time when weather permits, and it almost always does here in So Cal. http://www.lilysanctuary.org/ the Cockatoo Rescue and sanctuary in the pacific northwest is amazing, but they keep the birds and do not re home them. Birds are kept in HUGE aviarys with a flock of the same species. They don't get much human contact, but have their social needs met by their flock. they take greys as well as cockatoos, but nopt every type of bird, check them out at: http://www.cockatoorescue.org/index.htm
  11. Adorable pic on your avatar Deby... So far nobody has taken me up on my offer, looks like all of our members are safe for now. I'm glad nobody is suffering.
  12. Molly sounds like a smart one, be careful or soon she will be running your house and sending you out to the market at 2am to buy sorbet and toys. I love my TAG, and have been so much happier since I got him. My health has even improved (Im guessing being happier and sharing healthy food w/ him has contributed to this). I am so excited for you and am looking forward to hearing all about her as you learn more about eachother!
  13. You get your wish and realize that nothing is good enough to use your 1 wish power on...and you wish you had wished for two wish grants... I wish my car ran on Schroeder's poo
  14. I wouldnt worry about it. We bought an attachment called a delivery man. He shows up with food in boxes about the same time every evening. It has made the pans nice and safe, I don't even have to wash them anymore.
  15. And when he shows up, all beat up and smelly from getting to the island, he tells you he is gay and too tired to get you off the island. I wish cheese didnt have any calories
  16. Did you buy the flight cord to go with the harness or just the harness and leash? Also, Schroeder chewed through his last harness like a hot knife through butter....does it look like it would be easy to chew apart?
  17. We have a friend with a TAG that didnt talk at all. They got him as a baby, and one day he came home from work and the bird had a full vocabulary, was talking up a storm and hasn't shut up since. The bird was 13 1/2 years old when he started talking...I guiess he was waiting to have something memorable to talk about.
  18. I have a few friends with CAGs that get daily baths and are dusty. My tag gets a bats 2-3 times weekly and is nEVER even the timiest bit dusty. After being out of town for 1.5 weeks I picked him up from the bird sitter and he wasnt dusty at all. The TAGs at the bird store also seem to be distless. Are TAGs exempt from the dist factor, or have I just experianced a lot of exceptions to the rule? If anyone has both as pets, I would love some feedback. thhnks!
  19. I have found that most places are great to visit, its living somewhere that gets difficult. Forutnately with Disneyland 20 minutes away, I can escape any time I need too I see people bring their lap dogs to downtown Disney, I believe birds on leashes are welcome as well. We should have a local grey day down there. hmmmmmmmmmm, Ill have to get on that.
  20. Heck Dan, Visalia is nice. maybe I'll just come out for a vacation when this is all over
  21. No worries guys, I can't imagine how I would feel if I had to leave the house and didnt have somewhere SAFE to stash Schroeder. I don't want anyone to have to go through that way if I can help it.
  22. If anyone needs me to give a temporary home to their bird while they are in evacuation, please feel free to call me. I am in mission viejo and the fires won't come this far south. 949-419-4246 -Jen
  23. Southern California fires: If anyone needs me to give a temporary home to their bird while they are in evacuation, please feel free to call me. I am in mission viejo and the fires won't come this far south. 949-419-4246 -Jen
  24. Uhhhhhh, I don't know what the heck you guys are talking about? I don't get my own plate. Schroeder does let me eat most of the food off of his plate though hahahahahahaha. My avian vet said that saliva it typically only dangerous to young, old and sick birds. Most healthy adults benefit from the extra germs as it helps boost their immune system. That doesnt mean that you should spit on your birds mouth, but he told me that some cooties form a fork arent going to kill the bird half as easially as some of the fatty ingrediants we use. I would think it's best to consult your vet. I share food with schroeder just like I would with my husband. He is a large, healthy bird and does well in his health exams. At the end of the day, there are hundreds of ways for our birds to be harmed, and I'm not certain this is toward the top of that list. I'm sure many disagree, and I respect their oppinions.
  25. Be careful with the mobile phones, the chemicals in the screens and batteries can kill your fid, and those little guys sure are good at getting into trouble with their beaks.
