Thanks We brought the new bird home tonight, we haven't picked out a new name for him yet. We did get a pretty cool cage for him, and he was friendly with everyone in his last family, so we are hoping that socializing him here won't be too much harder than our TAG. The birds seem to be very curious about eachother, contact calling from across the house, it will be super cool when he is allowed out of quarantine. We will post some pictures soon! Thanks agian for the help and suggestions!

You might try making cage time fun time by adding special toys, treats and foraging activities only when you are about to leave. This will get your bird in the cage (so you can close the door behind her) and keep her busy enough to leave the house w/o having to listen to "don't leave me" squaks. No matter how much ou trust your pet, she is an animal and does not have the self control than many humans do. She should not be left out while you are working. Judy is 1,000,000% right about this. The cool thing about keeping your baby safe in her cage all day is you get to come home to a hearty series of "welcome home" squaks every time you return. It makes you feel like a million bucks!

I wouldn't worry about it. One of three things will happen: 1)Tizzy will realize it hurts and learn to be more careful 2) Tizzy won't care because it's all in a good day's fun. 3) Tizzy will get a bit slow from too many blows to the head and as a result, he will be much easier for us silly humans to comprehend. Though the other greys may laugh when you drop him off for school for being a cross eyes doofus with big lumps on his head and human friends... My TAG has kept falling on his head multiple times a day in his agenda, and seems to be doing well, though he isn't the brightest bulb on the tree. Perhaps I am on to something with #3

The housekeeper isn't licensed, bonded or insured. He/ She steals all your good stuff, ruins all your crummy stuff and skips town. I wish See's Candy marzipan didnt mess with my blood sugar.

Love at first sight. I was Macaw shopping, saw a timneh and my heart melted. I did some research and decided a timneh was the bird for me. Boy am I glad I changed my mind! Schroeder is perfect in every way (except when he poops in naughty places). He is sesitive, smart, quiet, ha a sense of humor, gentle, snuggly, playful, and small enough to take with me on errands and family visits. he also smells good. The one thing I respect about him above all else (and yes, I mean respect in the traditional meaning of the word) Is his total loyalty. These birds learn who to trust and can be very loyal, warm companions. Schroeder doesn't bite me, and even though he is small, when he is on my shoulder, he is usually scoping for predators. If a large bird ever swoops out of the sky into my condo and tries to eat me, I am sure Schroeder will warn me and do all he can to protect me. He even protects the door when the doorbell rings to scare away bad guys. I'm not sure how effective my guard bird is, but it's the thought that counts. With a grey you get the best qualities of so many animals in a small, soft, beautiful package.

Glad to hear you are still intact. I have a part time job at a bird store and havent been bitten by a cockatoo yet. Id rather stuff my pinky finger in a macaw beak then my wrist in that of a 2. you make me a bit less scared though. I heard that its not all that uncommon for adult toos to take chunks out of their favorite people. YIKES! next time wear a shark suit.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww *sniff* They grow up fast, take as many pictures as you can now, while she isnt on to you with the whole camera thing. As soon as they figure out that pictures are special, they will withold stand still time and try to manipulate you.... (I wonder if I'm reading too much into the whole pets on the go thing).

Everyone has such a happy holiday season that they are grumpy and rude when it's all over. I wish all thedebt from presents I buy for people would disapear off of my credit card statement,

Did you use a clicker or just treats to teach him? I am having trouble teaching Schroeder a ton. He picked up the whole go potty thing so easially it gave me false hope. Since then.....hes been a bit difficult to teach. What food reward are you using? I am looking for new exciting training treats that are small and tasty. My fid gets over treats quick.

Even if you decide to get one anyway, you should always check with an apartment manager or HOA before getting a bird. Some ban cockatoos, macaws and some conures due to screaming. They can fine you hundreds of dollars a month and make you get rid of your pet.

We are going to be rescuing a Senegal this month, and are looking for a great cage. The one his owners have been keeping him in is a canary cage, and we want to make sure he has something really fantastic and as large as is reasonable for him to move around and play in. He is a great bird and we aren't concerned about behavioral issues (yet), we just want him to have tons of room to play. Can anyone suggest a decent sized cage, I'm not sure what bar spacing is appropriate, and we dont want to over do it and get something so large that he doesn't feel secure. Also, do these guys prefer a pan of water to bathe in or to hang out in the shower with their humans? Any other nifty senegal tips would be appreciated. I will attempt to muddle through all the stuff we can find online about these guys, I'm just always concerned about the sources being accurate. Thanks again!

You might try putting a osting on craigs list for a ride or two. Id drive you myself if I wasnt so far away. I have a friend in your area that can probably take you after 7pm (she works late) providing you have your own vehicle. She is in between cars at the moment. Feel free to PM me if you would like me to get her info to you. Good luck!

My hair color changes every time I get it done...I have been just about every color under the sun. It doesnt freak Schroeder out and it hasn't killed him yet. I get a full blood and health check up dont for him twice a year and am sure the vet would catch something if it was there.

My friend tacks sheets to the ceiling to hang down in front of gaps between her kitchen cabinates and ceiling. She has a U2 that likes to go up there to poo. its annoying. The sheets look kinda funky, but she keeps them up, so it must work.

If you have a good breeder or bird store (notice bird store, not oet store) they may have someone on staff that can help you for less than the cost of the vet, depending on the injury. When this is over and you have financially recouperated, you may look into pet insurance for your bird. VPI is the only company in the US that I have found to insure birds, I paid the premium up front, but you can make monthly payments and its pretty cheap. They cover all sorts of things and it is great to have for just this sort of emergency. You can check it out here if you are curious: http://www.petinsurance.com/coverage/avian.aspx

Schroeder is 1 1/2 and doesnt talk. He doesnt make any human sounding gibberish noises either. He poops real good though, and he whistles a lot, though it is difficult to teach him new whistles.... Don't even bring up the things we had to do to get him to learn the queen of the night aria. On another note, we have a friend with a TAG that didnt say a word till he was over 13. That's right, I said it, thirteen yearls old. He came home from work one day and his wife was in shock. She is home with him every day and he had never said anything, she took him in the shower for a bath and he busted out al sorts of phrases. It was like he had been storing up 13 years of language info and released all of it like an atomic bomb. He has not shut up since. I know this is the exception to the rule, but it gives me hope that one day, in the very distant future, Schroeder will be able to muster a "hi!"

What makes your grey stand out in a crowd?
SchroedersJen replied to cflanny's topic in The GREY Lounge
Schroeder would be the one trying to feed all the other greys. He loves other greys and wants to share the love.... He's also a really big TAG (355g)and his #1 flight feathers on each wing are also abnormally long, forming an x over the end of his tail. awesome thread idea -
We get the tickets and bring our fids as our cabin mates. The trip is so noisy that the captain can't sleep and grounds the ship on an island in the middle of nowhere. I wish my husband liked doing dishes.

Judy, do you have a Chernobyl parrot? Last I checked they don't have earlobes to stick earrings through. Perhaps a nose ring or tongue bar would look better?
-
Pee Off if a good product, but you need to purchase the extra attachments separately. Be sure to get the cat version of pee off if it sets and starts to smell.

At that point, I think it's more adobe than concrete.
