I know Dan, Its odd. I was wondering if their crop juices have some nifty preservation quality. It's still yellow and doesnt stink.
-
Yeah, I know it's love and he has done little regurgitations before, but seriously, 1/4th of a cup of food out of a timneh....where does he keep it man? His crop doesnt stick out.....and hold cow, a month old food looking fresh and nice? It does not compute. I think I have an alien bird.

Schroeder doesnt like it cold, but if its warm he will eat it with no hesitation. For kale and other veggies, I mist them with apple or grape juice and he gives them a lot more attention and eats more.

I dont know about captions, but you may want to get about 100 more of the stuffed birds so you dont have to get up every 3 minutes to pick that one off of the floor for him. Also, in spy Ss Spy, the spy that looked like he was going to win usually ended up under an anvil or electrocuted or missing a limb, so tell Charlie to be careful

New member, not a new Parrot buddy

Hello AlphaWolf, After 25 years, I am sure you have some great stories and information to share with those of us newer to greys. It sounds like you have a wonderful bird, and I am looking forward to getting to know the both of you! -
This morning, as I was saying good morning to Schroeder, he was a nice people owner and decided to regurgitate the entire contents of his crop into my hand. He was so proud! While I typically get a tiny big of barfevery couple of months, I got a ton today....so I have 2 questions: He gets a wellness check every 6 months and at our last visit the vet said that he is very healthy and everything is awesome. Schroeder has not been acting or looking odd, he has not been losing weight, he has been active and hungry and....normal. Since he did this this morning and he spent yesterday on a playstand or on my shoulder, I know he didnt get into anything he shouldnt have. Is a large expulsion form the crop normal? Has this happened to anyone else? There was a tad bit over 1/4th of a cup of vomit. (I measured and have it in the freezer to ask the vet about on Monday if it seems like the thing to do) Also, and this is the strange bit....there was food in there that he ate over a month ago. Schroeder is only fed by me. he will not take food from anyone else, even if I am standing there. My husband and I have an agreement that he will not feed Schroeder, so I have a good idea of what goes in and that he doesnt get too much of something. Of course, there are exceptins for training rewards (chopped sunflower seeds and safflower seeds only) So when I say that the food is over a month old I KNOW it is. I gave schroeder rinsed off baby corn ears a month ago when we had steamed veggies with a chinese food order and it was the only time he has ever had them. I was surprised it was in the regurgitation mix today. I would have thought that it would have been digested by now. It was still bright yellow, did not have an odd smell to it....How did it stay down there for so long without getting funky?

What a sweet photo! Thanks for sharing

That's a great timneh profile. The squash is cool looking too!

Ralph, You may have to towel your bird if it is larger. I purchased a first aid kit for Schroeder and had the vet show me what everything was for and how best to use it. I know it was probably overkill, as there are instructions, but knowing I am doing things properly if there is an emergency and I can't get Schroeder to the vet (middle of night, holiday, we are at the cabin for the weekend and the roads home are blocked) will help me remain calm and confident.

Birds comfort has great customer service and good pricing. you may want to look here http://www.birdscomfort.com/large_bird_cages.html I bought this cage for schroeder and ehile it is large, it doesnt take up the whole living room http://www.birdscomfort.com/large_bird_cage.html here is a picture of him next to his cage

Thanks for the help Dan, every time I try to post a pic i end up trying 3 or 4 times before i can get it to work. You seem to have the mad skillzzzzzz. Does anyone think that pic is photoshopped? My husband, friend and I all think its real.

It's an ok cage, but it seems a bit small. TAGS, despite their smaller stature, don't know theyre small and are pretty active. My TAG has a larger cage and uses every square inch of it. I even have toys hanging off of the side and he gets around. he is not a perch potato. Perhaps your TAG is a bit older or less inclined to get all over. You may want to ask the people at your bird rescue what they think about the cage and if the bird you intend to bring home will need some extra room. There are many threads regarding cage websites on this site that you may find useful if it turns out that you would like something larger. On the other hand, it seems to be a good cage for the price and most of the customer reviews were quite positive.

In the days since I originated this thread, I have been living fine w/o poop off. I do not miss it and the household is not regressing back to caveman status thanks for the cleaning tips everyone!

Yeah, I saw Patsy's cage and had a moment of "when I'm rich and have a bigger home..." The cage we have is pleanty big, I can lean in and rest my arms on the central perches to give Schroeder his morning kisses and to tuck him in at night. It is also pretty strong. Before I brought Schroeder home, my niece (4 years old at the time) spent a day using it as a fort and crawling in and out playing birdy. While this was, in retospect, probably pretty stupid, The cage held up well.

Schroeders pad. the rope perch on the left allows him window access.

Birds Comfort has a cage very similar to cage 1 about 100 bucks cheaper http://www.birdscomfort.com/large_bird_cage.html Schroeder has this cage and i mounted a c shaped stiff rope perch under the breeder box door and hung toys from it. I put paper towels under it so he doesnt poo on the floor and it works well. It also has a playtop, was easy to assemble and I got great customer service form the site manager.

with 7 birds, you must know a good deal about poop....I will have to declare your post as the final poop off is a sham verdict. On another not, your flock is gorgeous. It must be very rewarding to come home to the chorus of hellos they must fill the house with

Yes, freeze it, and if she is in the mood to send a birdy care package before you are ready for a refill, feel free to have it shipped here, I will hang on to it for you. It may or may not be here when you are ready for it.

Wow, these are fantastic. You must have a great camera and some skills to boot! Thanks for sharing, these really are fantastic.

Greys are single species flock birds. In the wild, they only allow other greys into their flock and chase any other tyoes of birds away. this is a survival skill for them and is ingrained in their instincts. Most south american parrots are multi species flock birds, you will often see macaws, amazons and toher birds in the same flock. Since South American birds are patterened to live with other birds, it is easy to introduce new species into their flock. It is much harder with greys because their instincts are telling them that the other bird poses a real danger. In the wild, they rely on being part of a large grey mass to look big and scary and ward off preditors. A bird of a different color sends a signal that there are individual birds here. Your grey may not like having another bird if he has been an only bird and thinks he rules the roost. There is evidence to indicate that greys that are not first birds come into the multi speces flock have an easier time adapting to other types of birds. there is a long article that goes more in depth here: http://www.africangreys.com/articles/overview/learning.htm As the article suggests, you can certainly try to introduce another bird, but it will take a lot of time and patience and may cause more stress than it solves. My own personal experience leads me to believe that this is true. There is an exotic bird store locally that i bring Schroeder to to get supplies (I also purchased him there, it's a fantastic store. http://www.omarsexoticbirds.com/ At Omar's, the birds are kept out so that people can pick them up and play with them. They are not kept in cages all day. When I bring Schroeder, he LOVES it when I go play with the timnehs. he likes to feed the babies, allows them to crawl over me while he sits on my shoulder and he plays with them and makes happy, excited noises. When I go to the congo area he is curious and polite, but he is a bit confuses. None the less, he lets them crawl on me and, and on occasion will join in the play. Heaven forbit I try to pick up a bird of another species. he DOES NOT like those other birds. he gets nippy and makes ittitated chirps. He knows Im boss and tolerates the interaction, but once I made the mistake of picking up and snuggeling with a Scarlet Macaw and Schroeder lunged at the bird, screaming and I ended up chasing a terrified macaw around while Schroeder sat on a nearby perch. Yeah. The timneh freaked out the Macaw. His point was made and I did not do that again. If you believe that your vet is right and another bird is a good idea, id suggest another grey if you have the time and finds. It seems like it will be least stressful for your pet and more rewarding in the long run. Of course, and I am sure there are many members here that will agree, that their multi speces flocks can work out great, but I have to wonder how often the greys in the flock that we perceive to be getting along happily are really just putting up with it because they don't have a choice.

But if you have to leave it on for 10 min whats the point? water would work in 10 min too......

OK, since this is turning tino a poop thread, I am inclined to wonder if they use poop off to clean this device NSFW
