  1. Missing that much of his toe, his claw may not grow back. Do you have any styptic powder? If not you can use corn starch. Dampen i small bit slightly and put a decent amount on the end of a q-tip. Apply the styptic / corn starch to the wound with a small amount of pressure. If it does not stop, take him to the vet. If he has already lost a lot of blood, I may just take him right to the vet.
  2. If i were in your area I would love to take Larry. I have an open cage that I have been waiting to fill with the right rescue CAG.
  3. I use water bottles, that way their water stays clean and free of food/poo. But the locking food dishes may be your best option for the food.
  4. When I go back home to my parents house, I take my cats and my Greys with me. They all LOVE going to Grandma and Grandpa's house. We have another cage for the greys that stays at their grandparent's house, and the cats love to attack my mother's plants and sleep in the planters.
  5. this is actually a better link as you get the full sound effect. Make sure to have your speakers all the way up to hear what a Mollucan sounds like. http://www.mytoos.com
  6. I think that is a good choice. At one point my fiancee and I were going to rescue a Lesser-Citron Crested Cockatoo and I found that site while we were thinking about it. I decided that I will just try to be the best parront to the AGs I already have and if I ever find a AG that is in need of rescuing, then I will debate that when I get to that point.
  7. I do not think she wanted to discuss it further, maybe not at all or just not on this thread, that is up to her. But that is the beauty of forums like this, we are all humans and as such we all have our opinions whether they are right, wrong, or indifferent. These forums give us the opportunity to express our opinions. We just need to make sure that we express them in a civilized manor (not saying that anyone was not being civilized).
  8. Cockatoos really need A LOT of attention or them will scream. I have not heard a bird as loud as a moloucan scream. I have a website for you... http://www.mytoos.com/main.shtml check that out, it gives some decent information. I am so happy with my choice on an African Grey. Mine are not very loud at all. My Sun Conures put them to shame.
  9. I have not tried children's songs with my birds yet. I will have to find some and give them a try.
  10. I have not been able to find any real music mine like, but Saphira LOVES AFLAC commercials.
  11. I have another idea for you. Are you set on the CAG? Have you thought about a TAG? If your mother is scared of birds as large as a CAG then maybe a TAG is an option, as they are a little smaller. Also, I feel they are more receptive to more people as in they will bond with more people than a CAG will. Though this is a stereotype of the breed, not all TAGs are like that. TAGs are still just as smart. I have two TAGs and love them to bits. I am 34 and do not have any children of my own (my fiancee of 8 years has two children), so they are like my kids. I am not sure when the "honeymoon" period ends, but I have had mine for about 7 months and to thisday, I still cannot wait o get home from work to play with them.
  12. She must REALLY like the way a quack sounds. All she is doing is quacking and wolf whistling.
  13. The other day we heard our female TAG (Saphira) quacking like a duck. My fiancee swore that she sounded just like a duck quacking, but it is the middle of winter and not many ducks can live in -30 degrees. So I could not figure out how she would have picked up a duck quack. My fiancee and I were watching TV lastnight and an AFLAC commercial came on and Saphira started quacking again. I think she picked up the quack from AFLAC commercials. I guess she has taken a liking to the AFLAC duck. Think AFLAC wants a new spokesmodel??? I do not think it would be hard to teach her to say AFLAC after she quacks. And she waddles like a duck when she walks.<br><br>Post edited by: Sallas, at: 2009/02/08 03:18
  14. I am sorry about the female and driving comment, yesterday morning I had gotten run off the road by someone not paying attention while they were driving due to applying make-up. She was not paying attention and swerved into my lane. It had just caught me at a bad time.
  15. I know many people use vinegar and water mixture.
  16. I still have to disagree with this one. I have taught my bird to signal me when she needs to go to the bathroom. She is currently clipped (the breeder insisted on clipping her), but has gotten one of her flights back. At least when she is out of her cage she consistently signals me when she needs to go. If I ignore her signal, she will go, but she has no choice as she is clipped. If she signals me and I start to move her or get a paper towel, she will wait until I say "go dookey" to go.
  17. To some extent I have to disagree with you on this one Dave. African Greys are intelligent creatures and you can teach them to go potty in their cage or on a paper towel, or where ever you want to train them to go. Now I will not say that there will never be accidents, because to say always or never to something like this is setting your self up for failure. Even with humans you could not say never as humans have accidents too.
  18. You mean does it do it's make up while driving?
  19. Saphira used to lay down on my chest like that when I would lay down on the couch in the evening and watch a movie with her.
  20. There is no set time for how long a bird will take to get used to a new home, as all birds are individuals. Your bird is young yet, so I think it would not be as hard on him as it would an older bird. As for the potty training, there may still be accidents, but for the most part you can train a grey to poop anywhere that you want them to poop.
  21. I was looking for a parrot magazine myself lately, but it seems there are not many magazines for parrots.
  22. I think I found the image that you can put on the T-Shirt as the mascot for your club (I am not a member YET)
  23. I do not think the bird could pass anything on to your unborn baby, most illnesses that birds get we do not and the same with illnesses we get birds do not. There are a couple exceptions. I found this list of viruses that could be passed from parrot to human. They are all pretty rare. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/PS019 I hope this helps calm your mind about passing something to your baby. As for the mess, there is some clean-up involved with owning a parrot. Most of us accept this because of the benefits that we get from our loved companions. As the post above states, some of your feelings could be on the account of the different hormone levels in your system. Did your husband explain about the "mess" before you all got the bird? It sounds like he is trying to take care of the mess himself (from your statement).
  24. What type of water delivery method do you use? Dish or bottle? I use bottle, I do not have to worry about poopy water. For me the food water would not be an issue, but I would still be worried as well. We usually take our greys with us, but this last weekend we went out of town and decided it would be better for them to stay home for the weekend as it was -35 degrees outside. We could have hd the car warmed up for them, but still the journey to the car would have been quite a shock for them. We ended up having one of my friends bird sit. I could tell all our pets were so happy to see us when we got home though.
  25. Here by the title, I was going to ask if you have hit menopause.
