I got some Pictures lastnight of Saphira and Thorn.
-
Ok that did not work so well.

Ok I got some pictures. Here they are.

We only had Saphira for about 6 months, i had gone back and forth if I want a second grey or not. Saphira is the sweetest little Grey I have ever seen and I did not want to risk that. But we decided to get Thorn. Now I am so happy that we did when I see how well they get along. I was worried that she would get closer the her friend and pull away from me. But when she saw me again last night, she was so happy to see me. So in the end, there is a risk that the birds will not get along, but I figured it is still some company while I am at work. Not that I see how well they get along, I am happy that I got her a friend.

Oh I forgot to tell everyone how good her toe looks now :cheer: I think after some more of the pain goes away, she will be much more comfortable.

Yeah Roran kinda goes along with the whole inheritance theme too. I did not want to go with "Shruikan" because I think the poor little bird would have a hard time saying that name. Before book three came out i was really thinking I was going to name him Gleadr, i kinda like the name. But then in book 3, well you know what happens....

We got them lastnight. Thorn is awsome. They were stressed from the trip so I did not take any pictures last night. I will take some tonight though. And yes, i had gotten the third book the day it came out. Now I cannot wait for the last book. I was naming the birds by the name of the Dragons. Obviously I did not want to use Glaedr (if you read the third book) and Shruikan (the kings dragon) did not make sense. I can only guess that Saphira will end up with either Thorn or the male in the unhatched egg (I wonder if the egg will hatch for Roran?).

We have two Sun Conures that are named Bonnie and Clyde just because of the Conure personality. They are both lovers at heart though. They really crave to be the center of attention. They are a handful to take them out together unless you have some help. They team up on you.

I have an update for you all. As many of you know, when Saphira was a baby, she had splay leg and the vet put braces on her legs. when he did that he had messed up one of her back toes (the first digit was bent tight to the rest of her toe) this caused her toenail to grow right into her toe. We had to clip her nail so often and it was a very traumatic experience for Saphira. We contacted her breeder and her breeder had us send her via Delta back to her to take to her avian specialist. The vet was able to remove her toe nail in a way that it will never grow back. While at the breeders recovering Saphira was able to meet Thorn (the male TAG that we had on reserve at the breeders) the first day Saphira tried to bite Thorn (but that day was very traumatic for her as we were not there and she had the flight and all. the next day was the day the vet removed her toe nail so the breeder did not even attempt to put them together. On Saturday she put them together and Saphira started to feed Thorn, then Thorn in turn fed Saphira. The breeder said since then they have been inseparable. Both of my babies should be coming home early next week. I have a new cage all ready for them (I did not want to put them in Saphira's cage as she may be territorial of at and it may be to small for two birds). When they get home I will take some pictures of the new baby (Thorn) and then some pictures of them both in their new home.

We have a table top Java tree, and I have to admit the branches are REALLY smooth and do not offer very much grip. I got the unit because the branches are all different sizes and I thought she would get a good work-out with her feet on the variable sized branches. but she does not really like the unit that much and I really think it is because of how smooth the wood is.

6. The way she snuggles up under my chin to take a nap. 5. The way she has about her that can just take all my stress away when I play with her. 4. She is always SO happy to see me when I come home or walk into the room she is in. 3. When I call home from work to talk to my fiancee, Saphira always like to get her talking time to tell me what a pretty bird she is over the phone (I hope she does not learn to use the speed dial on the phone, I think she would be calling me all the time) 2. She can always tell my mood and always tries to make me feel better when I am feeling down. 1. Who else would help me clean the misc bits of food out of my beard after and during supper. There are many more, but I will have to add them later, I am at work and just got a call.

I am seeing that a lot of people with TAGs are saying the same thing. I know each bird has their own personality, but maybe there is some truth to it.

I am so sorry to hear that your bird died. I know how I would be taking it, in fact the life span of an African Grey is what helped me decided to get one. I have lost a few pets in my life and I always take it so hard. This way I thought this pet would out-live me. I am so sorry for your loss!

Well, you have a few options. Many airlines do have pet cargo. I have heard that Parrots usually make the flight quite well, but when we got our baby, we decided to drive to get her. They sell travel cages about $100.00 we put her in her travel cage and had a piece of cloth to cover the cage with (birds can get car sick, covering the cage usually helps with this if it happens). It all depends on your preference. We did not mind taking the road trip, so that was the way we decided to go.

I know things like if they were hand fed and raised and if they were abused will also have effects on this.

Thats the way Saphira is, I think she just trusts me so if I am showing it to her or bringing her to it, she knows I would not hurt her or put her in harms way so she is okay with it. But I had heard that TAGs are easier going thn CAGs so I thought maybe that was part of it.

I have a couple different play stands. One is store bought, which Saphira is okay with, but she seems to really love the PVC units that I have built. I wrap sisal twine around 1/2" PVC pipe for the perching parts and use 3/4" PVC for the frame work. The twine gives her a better grip on the perch (we all know how graceful greys can be). Here is the store bought one: it is by Prevue. I have even tried wrapping the wood perch with twine, but she still seems to like my PVC creations better.

I notice a lot of people saying how slowly they have to introduce things to their grey and it seems most of those people have CAGs. I have heard that TAGs are more laid back and maybe that is the cause, but I really do not have an issue introducing things to my TAG, she usually is very inquisitive and curious. It does not seem that new things really scare her. Is this do to the difference in the breeds or I just have a bird that is good about new things?

Saphira loves dehydrated Papaya. She will do anything for her papaya.

I have to agree with the pins being visable, I would think that the feathers you are finding are from moulting.

This post should be locked. It looks like tempers are getting pretty high here. And RyannsGreys, when you tell one person something on the internet you have to think you are telling EVERYONE in the world that statement. I think that BMustee was just trying to inform you that breeding birds is a lot of work and there is a lot of knowledge needed for the birds safety. One thing that I noticed about this forum is there are a lot of people that are brutally honest. They do not mean for things to seem harsh, but it comes across that way (I think it is because they love the breed so much)<br><br>Post edited by: Sallas, at: 2008/09/10 18:00

Any other opinions?

My TAG has a VERY VERY dark red tail, it looks almost blackish, but you can see the hint of maroon, until you get to the top 3/4 inch of her tail. That is bright red. I know most TAGs are not like this though, but like humans each bird is an individual.

I always get my pets presents for Christmas. Our cats can always pick theirs out even if there is not food in them, some times I really wonder how they know some of them are for them (I understand if i is catnip toys or cat treats and such). I was thinking of making a HUGE PVC jungle gym for them (the Greys and conures), I am sure there will be lots of new toys involved. I just got them a HUGE play stand. I wrapped the main wood perch part with Sisal twine for better grip though.<br><br>Post edited by: Sallas, at: 2008/09/08 19:26
