I read a post that indicated talking around a year. Just read another where someone's bird spoke at 7 mos and even at 3 yrs. It seems our bird is really starting to experiment with his voice sounds. I was wondering what were some of the phrases your birds say that are easy to catch on to. Should I stick to 2 or 3 word phrases or would I possibly be limiting the speech and should use larger complete sentences? I am saying Good morning, feed me, thank you, that feels good. I jave a song too. TBird is a pretty bird. TBird is a pretty bird. TBird is a pretty bird And Gary is a dumb butt!

Post edited by: Mel, at: 2008/08/04 00:22

I saw 2 comments. Where are the results of the poll? The comments indicate as early as 7 mos and as late as 2-3 yrs as far as I could tell.

He, he, that's funny. Thanks for the link.

Curious!!! What was the youngest age when your bird first spoke? What is your birds largest vocabulary? (How many words?) How many words in your birds longest sentence or phrase? Thankee for your input!:silly:

When I was just a kid my Aunt had a talking bird. I do not recall what kind it was. It would hollar for her just like my uncle did and sounded the same as him. Of course this drove her crazy. But when she had her first child it began to cry just like the child. She was jumping up all hours of the night!{Feel-bad-0002007F}

Yeah for Tiffany!!! Brandi is almost 8 yrs old. She is a calm, gentle child when handling all of our pets. She is aware of how to hold and release our dogs and other concerns unlike I have seen of most young children. However this technique is no good for a bird when she uses this caution and fear. I know this is true. She definitely can't take a bite. :woohoo: The sugar cane treats are in a container with her name on it. She will be the only one allowed to give it. There are some other great points her too. I am taller than Brandi in our approach. We may need to watck that also. I think I will let my husband be the on to work with them. We'll see how that works. Thanks for all the input! Mel

TBird is making me number one preference. My daughter is upset because she hoped to bond with this bird. I think part of the problem is she hesitates with her hand hovering over him. When I try to help her I think TBird is then showing a preference for me. If that makes sense. I purchased some sugar cane sticks that I am only going to allow my daughter to give. I'm hoping it sends a positive message. Any other ideas are appreciated. Mel

I'm sorry too. Make sure you find out the preventative measures to take for your other birds. Praying they don't have it too.

I never really noticed my Macaw or cockatiel doing this. Though the Macaw is a big show off with her wings.

Okay here is an unfinished sample. I couldn't find my canvas so I used this cotton for now. I used elastic to slide a dowel in or to hang toys. (I gotta get my saw out!)There is a pocket too. I think I'm going to put elastic at the sides to hold cape down to body more. Not sure if that is necessary yet. I wondered about sewing in a pad at shoulder but this morning seemed to be enough to eliminate the nail piercing. Any other ideas? Thanks, Mel.

My vet trims both the beak and nails of my macaw. I have heard some say this is not necessary. I would like some input as I know in Sept. we will be taking TBird in to see him. I don't know if he would recommend the same for a CAG. Thanks, Mel

I hope he is doing better.

That is more money than I expected. Hmmm....my cousin has a scale very similar to the one in the picture. Perhaps I should tell him to give it to me. He doesn't need it!

Thanks for the warning. I do my dogs nails. I keep cornstarch handy for any accident. I even have an antiseptic glue. Are birds issues different or any worse than a dog? I usually clip just the tips of the dogs. Though dogs do not need nails for balance. I know too long of nails have issues as well.

I dumped the pellets in a container. I think my husband got Pretty Pellets.(?) I don't have any stains as yet because I tend to it immediately. I was just wondering if it was necessary. Well the poop conversation is in the search engine now. hehe.

He is a flighted bird also. When he does it on my shoulder I tell him "that feels good." What a wonderful fan! It reminds me of going to powwows with our hand held feathered fans on hot days fanning ourselves. I was thinking how funny it would be if TBird was there at the event to fan me instead!

I knew a Macaw that said Helloooo in a question tone. And he only said it when you werein the other room as though he wondered if you were there and to call you to him. Once in the room he NEVER said it. The only word in all of 6-7 years.

Good Morrrrring! Too cute!

This is our first CAG. He does a good bit of wing flapping while holding onto something. We have had other species and I never noticed this. Is this a CAG thing? I'm thinking it is because I did notice a couple of posts referring to the balance of play gyms. I was thinking because of weight but now I suspect due to this wing flapping. I haven't made my gym yet but it should be secure if bolted securely to a somewhat weighted flat bottom. Right?

Man I can't seem to keep TBird away from the keyboard when I'm typing. This is the second time he made my message disappear! He likes grabbing pens when I'm writing also. Anyway, let's talk about POOP STAIN. Yep I said it. It must be unspoken because the search engine was null.:pinch: Do you guys just rush to rinse and throw clothes in the wash machine or do you spray with a specific product which might even allow waiting to wash? Do tell. You can be anon if you want to pm me!

I wanna play too! Did you make it yourself? I really need to get mine going!

I know a place where the vet visits and does the wing, beak and nail trim on the third Sat of month for a reasonable price. However I don't want to wait since they are sharp. I really don't care to towel/cover his head. I want him to like the towel. But since I'm not going to clip his wings either I might as well do his nails myself and save the trip/cost entirely. Unless I find he needs his beak trimmed. I do want to make sure to use an instrument that has been successful with others. I can play with TBirds feet. I hope that is a good sign. The vet also told me fast growing nails can be a good sign of health. Thanks for the tips. Mel

This morning I put TBird on the play gym with the LEFTOVER seed and pellets. I added a bowl of frozen mix veggies which he seemed to eat/sample. No nuts or sunflower today. Later I returned him to his cage with fresh water and pellets only. He did not touch them. I bought some baby food veggies tonight but by the time I came home he was eating and is still working on the pellets. I'm sure he's given in to the hunger. I will offer him the baby food veggie in a little while. Two questions... 1- Is it alright to split up the variety of foods into seperate meals to make him give in to eating the stuff? 2-What kind of scales are you guys using to weigh your birds? Are they expensive or just kitchen scales? Thanks.

TBird just destroyed one of those plastic balls with bell. I used it on his play gym so I could monitor but no more for TBird! I am going to make stainless steel condiment cups with washers for a bell.
