  1. Hi, I have a book called "A New Owners Guide To African Grey Parrots", by Nikki Moustaki that has a few recipes in it - one that my Bingo loves is called African Grey Bread 1 pkg Corn Muffin Mix- follow the directions on the pkg. after the batter is mixed you add: 1/2 cup pellets 1/2 cup dried fruit 1/2 cup canned beans (any kind) 1/2 cup broccoli (I have to chop this real fine, as my grey isn't real fond of it) or you can use any other veggie. 2 TBS crushed cuttlebone 2 TBS chunky peanut butter The recipe also says you can add anything else that you think your Grey might like. I cooked mine in a mini muffin pan and froze them and thaw one out every morning to go with whatever else he has for breakfast. I also made African Grey Beans and Rice 1 can beans (any type) or cooked dried beans 1 cup brown rice 2 grated carrots 3 or 4 chopped jalapeno peppers Freeze in ice cube trays and thaw a cube each day. Both of these make enough to last two or three weeks. There are a few more recipes in this book - If you want all of them, let me know and I will post for you. Good Luck!
  2. I have only had him for three weeks and he is 8 years old. Like I said, he is absolutely wonderful and so sweet, didn't think he would ever love to cuddle the way he does. I have tried different words and little tunes, (got my son to whistle, with high praise and a treat when he finished). Even if he never says anything different from what he already does, it would be just fine, but reading some of the other posts - I was just curious. I never expected him to be as loving as he is so soon in his new home, surrounded by new people.
  3. Thanks for all of the advise - am working on them all and I can feel him hold a little tighter when I say "hold on". Also, the thumb on his feet works real well too! Don't know what I would do without you guys!!
  4. Hi, just wondering how much Red Palm Oil I should put in Bingos food everyday - I think I read 1/4 tsp. somewhere, but just wanted to double check. Also, purchased some Aloe Juice for baths - do you use it full strength or dilute with water. I also have another question, Bingo has done remarkable since he has been home in just 3 weeks - he steps up fine, sits on my shoulder and bends down for a head scratch, grumbles when I try to take him down, and tonight started preening my hair. He does talk - says hello, come here, come on, whats up, and a few other things. So far though, he has not tried anything that I have tried to teach him. I read all the time other people saying their birds will repeat words after hearing it one time. I just can't get him to do anything that he wasn't already doing when I got him. Am I expecting to much to fast? Just wanted to say that all of you guys are so great on this forum - I go in just about every night and read all of the new posts, and have really learned alot. Thanks to all!!
  5. Thank you all so much! He is just wonderful and full of himself - already knows that I am wrapped all around his little talon.
  6. Hi, I saw that too and my grey trembles, but I thought like you that he was nervous. We have only had him a week and he is not used to everyone in the family yet. Will be watching to see what everyone has to say. Mine does not do it all of the time - does yours?
  7. Well, Bingo has been home a week now and he is just wonderful! I have enjoyed him so much - no bites and bends down his head all of the time for a neck scratch. He will grab my lip for a kiss, but I try to avoid that - someone else must have let him kiss in the mouth. He is just amazing and each day just seems to be getting more and more relaxed. I am so lucky to have found such a wonderful friend. Also found out that he is 8 and not 10 (not that it makes any difference). About the only thing is when I take him out of the cage and he goes to my shoulder when I am walking, I feel that he is so unsteady and I am afraid he is going to fall off - so I walk around looking like - well I don't know, but I know its not pretty! I have tried several times to keep him on my hand and put my other hand on his back until we get to where we are going - sometime he lets me and then the next time he doesn't like it. His wings are trimed and when he takes off and goes to the floor it worries me that he might hurt himself. Thanks for any advise!

  9. Well, at least I got a pic on my profile!! Will try again later --
  10. Bingo is home!! He has done wonderful today - so much better than I expected. When we first got home and got his cage ready, I sat the kennel I bought him home with in the bottom of the cage, it took about an hour or so before he came out. Within a couple of hours he was very vocal, said Hi, Hello, I want a cookie ( I gave him a banana chip, which he promptly dropped to the floor ), meows, and a few other things I am not sure of yet. I need to find out what his "cookie" is though. We have just been amazed at him all day - we left the door open several times this afternoon, but he has not decided it is safe to leave yet - I know it won't be long though. I feel so lucky to have found him and can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Oh, he did let me pet his head and he also danced with me! Hopefully tomorrow he will come out and I can get a good pic to post so I can stay a member of this wonderful forum! LOL
  11. Thank you all SO much! I feel so much better about him and actually am bringing him home tomorrow! When I went for my visit today, he got on the owners hand and then on to mine, he kissed her and then when I got him he leaned to me, and I thought for a kiss - then he bit my lip! No blood, just a welp, LOL. BUT, the great thing is that, before I left he regurgitated (? spelling), thats all it took for me - I'm in love.
  12. Hi, just joined the forum and I have lots of questions about Greys. I am in the process of adopting a male that is approx. 10 years old. I have been going to visit him for the last three days to see if he will warm up to me. He has had two previous owners and his current owner is ill and no longer able to care for him. He did kiss me today, but also tried to bite when I moved my hand to fast (my fault), even then he did not bite down hard enough to hurt. He talks some, although I have not heard him yet. I think I am in love, but am apprehensive and a bit scared of taking a bird that may have some bad habits that are to far gone to correct. You cannot take him out of the cage, but he will let you pick him up off of the floor. I would love to take this bird and give him a permanent and good home - I guess I would like to hear what everyone thinks and the experiences you have had. I have never owned a Grey and my first thought was a baby, until now. Thanks for any input!
